Plane Crash in South Korea

A passenger jet crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, resulting in the death of 179 individuals. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air, was carrying 181 people, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members.

The incident occurred at 9:03 a.m. local time. The plane failed to deploy its front landing gear while landing, skidding off the runway and crashing into a wall. Eyewitness videos showed the plane engulfed in flames.

Only two crew members survived the disaster. Initial investigations are examining potential causes, including a possible bird strike and adverse weather conditions.

The South Korean government declared Muan a special disaster zone and set a weeklong national mourning period. This was the deadliest airline disaster in South Korea's history.

Trump for TikTok

President-elect Donald Trump asked the US Supreme Court to delay a potential TikTok ban. The court will hear arguments on this matter on January 10. The law requires TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the app by January 19 or face a ban.

Trump's legal team stated that he wants to pursue a "political resolution" once he takes office.

A coalition of 22 state attorneys general, led by Montana's Austin Knudsen, supports the law, citing national security concerns. The Justice Department claims that Chinese control of TikTok poses risks, such as sensitive data collection.

TikTok, with 170 million users in the US, argues that this law threatens First Amendment rights. TikTok previously claimed to store user data in the US on Oracle-operated servers.

Debt Ceiling Drama

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the US will reach its $36 trillion debt ceiling between January 14 and January 23.

If Congress does not act, the Treasury Department will implement “extraordinary measures” that involve special accounting tactics to help prevent default until lawmakers address the borrowing limit.

The debt ceiling was previously suspended until January 1, 2025, due to the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023. Without Congressional action, the government risks being unable to pay its obligations.

President Joe Biden recently signed a spending bill that did not address the debt ceiling, leading to internal conflict among Republicans. President-elect Trump advocates for abolishing the debt ceiling.

Salt Typhoon Breaches US Telecoms

AT&T and Verizon confirmed they were targets of the Salt Typhoon hacking campaign linked to China. Their networks are now secure, but hackers aimed at political and intelligence figures.

The White House reported that nine US telecom firms were compromised. This operation granted access to private communications, including texts and phone calls of many Americans.

Officials believe the hackers sought to identify senior government targets. The hackers managed to geolocate millions and recorded phone calls.

Senator Ben Ray Lujan labeled Salt Typhoon the largest telecommunications hack in US history.

FDA Approves Opdivo Qvantig for Cancer Treatment

The FDA approved an injectable form of Bristol Myers Squibb’s cancer drug, Opdivo, now branded as Opdivo Qvantig. This new formulation allows for subcutaneous injection in just 3 to 5 minutes.

The injectable version targets adult solid tumors and is approved for use alone, as maintenance therapy, or with chemotherapy. Opdivo Qvantig’s price ranges from $7,635 to $15,269 per infusion.

A late-stage study with 495 participants showed that Opdivo Qvantig is comparable to the intravenous form, particularly for advanced kidney cancer.

Blue Origin’s New Glenn Rocket Prepares for Launch

Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket successfully performed a static fire test at Cape Canaveral, Florida. During the test, seven BE-4 engines ignited for 24 seconds, including 13 seconds at full thrust.

The FAA issued a commercial launch license, permitting Blue Origin to launch from Cape Canaveral. This license is valid for five years. The company plans the first launch, known as NG-1, as early as January 6, 2025.

New Glenn stands 98 meters tall and features a two-stage vehicle design. The first stage is powered by seven BE-4 engines, each generating 550,000 pounds of thrust.

The inaugural flight will carry the Blue Ring Pathfinder, a technology demonstrator for future space operations.
