Rate Hikes Leave a Long-Lasting Aftermath: Fed Study
  • The San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank finds that interest rate increases reduce potential economic output for at least 12 years

  • These effects develop primarily through investment decisions resulting in lower productivity and capital stock

  • Traditional theories of national economies assume policy has a neutral effect in the long run

  • It looks like the Fed may have just uttered a big womp womp for fast economic recovery

Relief for High Earners with Delay to 401(k) Catch-up Rule Change
  • The Secure 2.0 Act, passed late last year, originally mandated that if 401(k) plans allow older workers to make “catch-up” contributions they must ensure those earning more than $145,000 use an after-tax Roth for their contributions — rather than a traditional pre-tax 401(k) — starting in 2024.

  • The IRS has pushed back the deadline for this change until 2026, giving employers time to adjust to the Biden administration’s package of reforms.

  • The decision temporarily prevents high earners from forfeiting the tax benefits associated with catch-ups made to traditional pre-tax 401(k) accounts.

  • Looks like those at the top are living large…again.

Listen In to Russian Soldier's Phone Calls From Ukrainian Frontline
  • Ukraine’s Security Service intercepted 17 phone calls from Russian soldiers fighting in the Ukraine in early July.

  • The calls are filled with expletives and complaints about poor equipment, heavy casualties, and a lack of munitions.

  • This provides us a rare glance into the conditions of some Russian soldiers, as they battle it out with underprepared troops.

  • Early Wednesday morning, Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv which was intercepted by the country's air defence systems.

  • Looks like Putin's promise of "whatever it needed" to the army has fallen flat

Cancer on the Rise: Why Do We Have More Young People Being Diagnosed?
  • Cancer rates among people younger than 50 have risen drastically over the past three decades.

  • Cancers of the windpipe and prostate were the ones that rose most sharply.

  • It is still a mystery why this is the case, although it could be linked to environmental pollution, changing lifestyles, etc.

  • The trend threatens to strain already stretched healthcare systems, and future cases and associated deaths will continue to increase by 2030.

  • Cancer is a strange beast, but with the rise of early-onset cancer, the only thing that’s certain is that it’s sure to keep scientists scratching their heads.
