FTX Sues Binance

FTX filed a lawsuit against Binance and its former CEO Changpeng Zhao, seeking $1.8 billion. The claim alleges that FTX management fraudulently transferred funds to Binance.

This stems from Binance's stake sale in FTX, which it acquired in 2019 and sold back in July 2021.

The lawsuit states that FTX's Alameda Research financed the buyback using tokens valued at $1.76 billion. However, Alameda was insolvent at that time and could not fund the purchase legally.

FTX's administrators aim to recover at least $1.76 billion for creditors and seek additional compensatory and punitive damages. Binance called the lawsuit meritless.

The Sickest Patients are Leaving Private Medicare Plans

Between 2016 and 2022, around 300,075 people with significant medical needs dropped Medicare Advantage for traditional Medicare, doubling the rate of other enrollees near the end of life.

Medicare Advantage patients frequently encounter coverage denials for nursing home stays or rehabilitation. Leading to switches to traditional Medicare—a move that shifts costs onto taxpayers.

Traditional Medicare spent twice as much on hospital care and three times as much on nursing home care for late-life switchers. Medicare Advantage plans avoided $10 billion in medical expenses during this period, profiting $6 billion.

Insurers argue they follow Medicare guidelines, though a 2022 study found 13% of denied claims met Medicare’s criteria.

China's Trillion Dollar Surplus

China is set to achieve a trade surplus of $1 trillion this year. In the first ten months of 2024, the surplus reached $785 billion, a rise of almost 16% from 2023.

This growing gap between exports and imports has increased tensions with the US, EU, and ASEAN. Exports surged 12.7% in October, the highest growth seen in over two years.

China exports to approximately 170 economies. With a 4.4% rise in the surplus with the US and nearly 36% with ASEAN, concerns mount over potential trade wars.

The trade surplus accounts for 5.2% of China’s GDP, its highest since 2015. India indicates it may allow its currency to weaken in response to Chinese trade practices.

AI Art Breaks Records

A humanoid robot artist named Ai-da made history by selling its artwork for over $1 million at a Sotheby’s auction.

The piece, titled A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing, exceeded expectations, as auctioneers predicted a sale between $120,000 and $180,000. The auction had 27 bids placed for the artwork.

Ai-da, the robot artist, was created by Aidan Meller, who has 25 years of experience in the art world. The artwork draws inspiration from renowned pieces like Pablo Picasso’s Guernica and Edvard Munch’s The Scream.

Ai-da employs a combination of cameras and artificial intelligence to create art, all within a robotic body designed to resemble a woman.
