Black Sea Ceasefire
Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a truce focused on maritime and energy attacks.
The US will facilitate lifting some sanctions on Russia, particularly affecting agricultural exports. The Kremlin insists that sanctions relief is essential for the agreement to take effect.
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy expressed skepticism over Russia's compliance and pledged to request additional sanctions if there are violations of the agreement.
This deal emerged after three days of talks in Saudi Arabia. Maritime safety was a key focus, addressing the blockade Russia imposed early in the war.

Gazans Protest Against Hamas
Hundreds of Palestinians rallied in northern Gaza, marking the largest anti-Hamas protest since the war began.
Demonstrators in Beit Lahia chanted slogans like "Hamas out" and "Hamas terrorists." Calls for further protests are circulating on Telegram, showing that discontent is rising.
Fatah's spokesman urged Hamas to "step aside" for the Palestinians' welfare. Demonstrators demanded an end to the ongoing conflict and a future without Hamas's rule.
This protest followed a week of intensified Israeli bombing, which resumed after two months of truce.

China Targets Laid-Off US Federal Workers
A covert Chinese tech firm is allegedly using a network of fake consulting companies to recruit recently laid-off US government workers.
Four firms are implicated, utilizing overlapping websites and sharing the same server as Smiao Intelligence.
Job ads on platforms like Craigslist and LinkedIn sought candidates for roles in geopolitical consulting, human resources, and project management.
Experts warn that if recruited, former employees may be pressured to divulge sensitive government information.

ChatGPT's New Image Generation
OpenAI upgraded ChatGPT's image generation capabilities to produce photorealistic visuals.
The model enables multi-turn conversations for image refinement, such as adding objects like a hat to a snail in a city. GPT-4o can generate up to 20 distinct objects and render text within images more accurately.
Users can upload reference images for customization. This upgrade improves image generation for practical applications, including logos and infographics.
The model uses a combination of online training and reinforcement learning, with transparent metadata to protect artists' rights.

Insights into Synaptic Plasticity
Research revealed that Behavioral Timescale Synaptic Plasticity (BTSP) better explains memory and learning than the traditional belief that stronger connections between neurons formed when they activated together.
Studying hippocampal neurons in mice, researchers found constant activity changes, even in familiar environments, suggesting the complexity of memory storage.
BTSP events, triggered by calcium spikes within neurons, occur more frequently during learning. These evolving neuronal representations help distinguish similar memories and reduce confusion in recall.

Parkinson's Gut Bacteria Treatment
Studies suggest links between gut bacteria and Parkinson's disease (PD).
Deficiencies in B vitamins, particularly riboflavin (B2) and biotin (B7), are associated with altered gut microbiomes in PD patients, indicating potential benefits from vitamin supplementation.
Research also showed that the probiotic Bacillus subtilis reduced neuron toxicity and alpha-synuclein levels by 77%.
A comparative analysis found both PD and IBD patients share a depletion of butyrate-producing bacteria, with IBD patients showing a 17% higher risk of PD linked to gut dysbiosis, suggesting a shared microbial factor in both conditions.
