Hostage Release and Gaza Ceasefire Deal
Officials announced a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. This agreement, confirmed by the US and Qatar, will pause the 15-month war and initiate a process to release hostages. The ceasefire will take effect on Sunday, lasting for 42 days.
Key details of the deal include the release of 33 hostages in the first phase, primarily women and children. Although nearly 100 hostages remain captive, it is believed that at least 35 might be deceased.
In return, Israel will withdraw from populated areas within the Gaza Strip. Israel will also release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
While this deal signals potential peace, uncertainty remains as some aspects still need formal approval from Israel's cabinet.

December's Consumer Price Index
In December, the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.4%, the largest increase in nine months. This brought the annual inflation rate to 2.9%, up from 2.7% in November.
Energy prices climbed 2.6% due to a 4.4% surge in gasoline costs, accounting for over 40% of the CPI increase. Food prices also pushed higher, rising 0.3%, with egg prices soaring 3.2% and a year-on-year increase of 36.8%.
The core CPI, which excludes food and energy, gained 0.2% in December, and its annual rate decreased slightly to 3.2%. Shelter prices increased by 0.3%, with a 4.6% rise year-on-year, the smallest gain since January 2022.
The interest rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage in the U.S. has climbed to 7.09%, the highest since May 2024. This is the fifth consecutive week of rising rates. The US budget deficit surpassed $1.8 trillion last year, a record high outside the COVID-19 period.

Wall Street Banks’ Profits Soar
JPMorgan reported a net income increase of 50%, exceeding $14 billion in the fourth quarter. Its earnings per share rose to $4.81, beating projections. Total managed revenue hit $43.7 billion, a 10% increase year-over-year.
Wells Fargo’s net income surged by nearly 50% to $5.1 billion, with earnings per share at $1.43. Goldman Sachs reported nearly $35 billion from global banking and markets, leading in mergers and acquisitions.
Overall, the six largest US banks projected a combined profit of $31 billion for the last quarter of 2024, a 16% rise from the previous year.
Increased trading and deal-making activity fueled this success, influenced by interest rate movements and a favorable economic outlook.

Blue Origin's New Glenn Rocket Soars
Blue Origin successfully launched its New Glenn rocket. This was the rocket's first test flight from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The 320-foot (98-meter) rocket carried a prototype satellite into orbit.
During the mission, the experimental satellite will stay within the rocket's second stage, while circling Earth for six hours.
Although the first-stage booster missed its Atlantic landing, Blue Origin successfully achieved its main goal. The company aimed for the satellite to successfully enter orbit. New Glenn is designed to transport spacecraft and astronauts to orbit and the moon.
Blue Origin plans for six to eight New Glenn flights in 2025. The next launch is expected in spring.

Earth's Hidden Core
Scientists identified a second, distinct layer within the Earth’s already scorching inner core. Joanne Stephenson from the Australian National University explains this finding may necessitate rewriting textbooks.
Traditionally, Earth consists of four layers: the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. The inner core reaches temperatures over 5,000 degrees Celsius (9,000 degrees Fahrenheit) and represents only 1% of the Earth's total volume.
Using advanced algorithms, researchers analyzed decades of seismic data from the International Seismological Centre. They discovered variations in how seismic waves travel through different materials, suggesting there might be two separate cooling events in Earth's history.
The study indicates a change in the direction of seismic waves at a 54-degree angle, revealing new information about the structure of iron in the inner core. This hints at the true complexity of Earth's hidden layers.

FDA Bans Red Dye No. 3 Due to Cancer Risks
The FDA banned Red Dye No. 3, also known as erythrosine, from food and drugs. This comes after studies linked the dye to cancer in laboratory rats. The ban follows a petition from health advocates in 2022, urging the FDA to revoke its authorization.
The dye was previously banned in cosmetics in 1990 for similar reasons. Food manufacturers must remove Red 3 by January 15, 2027, while drug makers have until January 18, 2028. Imported foods must also comply with this new regulation.
Red 3 is commonly found in over 2,800 products, including candies like Ringpop, Dubble Bubble gum, and strawberry milk. It was used in 215,780 pounds of food and drugs in 2021 alone.
Children aged 2 to 5, based on body weight, consume this dye at twice the rate of adults, raising concerns among lawmakers and health experts.
