China's Startup Scene Collapse

In 2024, only 260 new companies launched in China. This number dropped from 1,202 in 2023 and plunged 99% from a peak of 51,302 in 2018.

Year-to-date fundraising hit $5.38 billion, down from $125 billion in 2017. Dollar-denominated funds raised under $1 billion compared to $17.3 billion in 2022.

State-run VC funds now dominate the market, holding about 80% of total capital. These funds require managers to guarantee returns.

Investors noted that the culture of risky, high-reward ventures has all but vanished.

Gulf Oil Production Takes a Hit

Nearly 30% of U.S. crude oil production and 41% of natural gas production went offline because of disruptions caused by Hurricane Francine.

This amounts to over 522,000 barrels of oil and 755 million cubic feet of natural gas not being produced. Losses this week total 1.82 million barrels of crude oil and 4.12 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

On Saturday, 52 oil and gas platforms remained unmanned, which is about 14% of the total. This is down from 171 evacuated earlier in the week.

The storm struck with winds reaching 100 mph in coastal areas and caused widespread flooding. About 37,000 people in Louisiana lost power.

The Future of Fertility Technology

One in six adults faces infertility, yet 85-90% of cases are treatable. IVF costs range from $15,000 to over $30,000 per cycle.

The startup Gaia uses machine learning to predict successful pregnancy chances. Their model is based on 20,000 applicants and global clinic data.

Members pay a protection fee upfront. If they don't have a baby after three cycles, they owe nothing beyond initial fees.

Meanwhile, In vitro gametogenesis (IVG) could allow individuals without viable sperm or eggs to conceive. Gene therapies may correct infertility-causing genetic mutations and artificial wombs are also under development.
