Cybertruck Explosion Outside Trump Hotel
On January 1, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. The explosion killed the driver, 37-year-old Army Master Sgt. Matthew Livelsberger, and injured seven bystanders.
Authorities determined that Livelsberger died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound just before the explosion, which was caused by homemade explosives and fireworks in the vehicle.
The FBI found no clear links between this incident and a deadly truck attack in New Orleans that same day. Livelsberger, a decorated soldier with multiple deployments, rented the Cybertruck on December 28, 2024, in Colorado.
The explosion caused minimal damage to the hotel itself, raising questions about Livelsberger's intentions.

Tesla’s First Sales Decline in Over a Decade
In 2024, Tesla's global vehicle deliveries reached 1.79 million, a 1.1% drop from 2023's 1.81 million. This is Tesla's first annual decrease in sales since 2011.
There was a fourth-quarter surge of 495,570 vehicles—up 2.3% year-over-year. This stemmed from interest-free financing and free Supercharging. However, Tesla needed to sell 515,000 vehicles in Q4 to surpass its 2023 performance.
Average sales prices dropped to over $41,000, the lowest in four years. Nearly all of Tesla's recent sales came from its Models 3 and Y, with only 23,640 units sold from premium models.
Looking ahead, the company aims for 20-30% annual growth but needs new, affordable models priced in the mid $30,000s to attract a broader customer base.

The four-week moving average declined by 3,500 to 223,250. This data suggests low layoffs are occurring. The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.2%.
US mortgage rates increased to 6.91%, a six-month high. Last week, home-purchase applications dropped by almost 7%.

Court Strikes Down Net Neutrality
The US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled against the FCC, rejecting its net neutrality rules. This represents the end of nearly two decades of efforts to regulate broadband providers like utilities.
The court determined that the FCC lacked the authority to restore rules that inhibit internet service providers from slowing or blocking content.
The court's opinion noted that broadband must be classified as an "information service," not the more strictly regulated "telecommunications service."
FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel urged Congress to enact federal net neutrality laws. Meanwhile, industry groups celebrated the ruling as a win for consumers, claiming it would lead to greater investment and competition.

Apple Settles Siri Privacy Lawsuit
Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit over Siri's privacy violations. The lawsuit claimed Siri recorded users' private conversations without consent and shared them with third parties.
This class-action suit began after a 2019 report highlighted that Apple contractors listened to sensitive recordings, even those triggered accidentally.
The settlement may compensate tens of millions of affected users, with payouts of up to $20 per Siri-enabled device. Eligible devices include iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches purchased between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024.
Plaintiffs described how their private discussions about products, like Air Jordans and Olive Garden, led to targeted advertisements. Another plaintiff received ads for a surgical treatment after discussing it with a doctor.

Unraveling Medicare Advantage
An investigation by The Wall Street Journal revealed issues within the $450 billion Medicare Advantage system.
From 2019 to 2021, insurers generated an extra $50 billion by adding unverified diagnoses. For example, over 66,000 patients were inaccurately diagnosed with diabetic cataracts.
Insurers also sent nurses to identify conditions that doctors had not diagnosed, yielding average additional payments of $1,818 per visit, totaling $15 billion. UnitedHealth's patients appeared 55% sicker on paper within their first year of enrollment.
Additionally, Medicare Advantage plans collected premiums for patients already using the Department of Veterans Affairs for healthcare. One in five veterans enrolled in these plans didn't use any Medicare services in 2021.
