DOJ Drops All Cases Against Trump
Special Counsel Jack Smith announced the dismissal of all felony charges against President-elect Donald Trump.
Smith argued that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has a long-standing policy against prosecuting sitting presidents. Smith moved to drop both the election subversion charges and an appeal over classified document charges.
Trump was originally charged with trying to overturn the election and withholding classified documents, resulting in 40 felony charges. He maintained his innocence throughout.
Additionally, Trump's sentencing for a New York case was postponed indefinitely.

Trump’s Tariff Tensions Begin
President-elect Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico, effective January 20, 2025. This move targets drug trafficking and migration issues.
Additionally, Trump aims to implement a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. He argues that China is failing to control the flow of illicit drugs into the US.
In 2023, 83% of Mexico's exports went to the US, while 75% of Canadian exports followed the same route. Trump's actions may violate the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) established in 2020.
Following the tariff announcement, the US dollar rose 1% against the Canadian dollar and 2% against the Mexican peso. In contrast, stock markets in Asia and Europe experienced declines.

The Battle Over Google's Ad Empire
The Department of Justice (DOJ) argues that Google holds a monopoly in online advertising. It claims Google controls 91% of the publisher ad server market and 87% of the advertiser ad network market.
The DOJ suggests that Google's dominance harms content providers and prevents them from earning adequate revenue due to high fees.
Google counters that it only controls about 10% of the broader online advertising market. The company asserts that its investment in technology benefits consumers by lowering prices, claiming its transaction fee has dropped to 31%.
US District Judge Leonie Brinkema will make a ruling expected by year-end. If she finds Google at fault, she may impose remedies, including potential divestitures.

Neuralink’s Mind Control Feasability Tests
Neuralink will begin the Convoy Study. This trial tests a brain-computer interface that helps paralyzed individuals control a robotic arm with their thoughts.
The FDA approved this feasibility study. It merges with Neuralink’s ongoing PRIME study, focusing on the safety of its N1 Implant. This small and wireless device is already implanted in two patients in the US.
Participants in the PRIME study can cross-enroll in the Convoy Study to further evaluate the device’s effectiveness. In Canada, six patients with paralysis will also join the trial, with approvals secured from Health Canada.
Success stories from current trials include one patient who navigates video games and social media. Neuralink aims to empower those with conditions like quadriplegia and ALS.

Ceasefire Deal Near: Israel and Hizbollah Seek Resolution
Israeli and Lebanese officials indicated that a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah may be finalized within days.
The deal proposes a 60-day ceasefire. During this time, the Israeli military would withdraw from southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah would relocate its weapons north of the Litani River.
The Lebanese Armed Forces, supported by UN peacekeepers, would take control of vacated areas.
Key sticking points include monitoring the ceasefire and Israel's demand to enforce violations militarily. The US and France will join the oversight committee, alongside Lebanese and Israeli forces.

Nvidia Unveils Fugatto
Nvidia introduced Fugatto, an AI model designed to generate and modify audio. This model features 2.5 billion parameters, allowing it to create music, sound effects, and manipulate voices.
Fugatto can transform existing audio, such as changing the pitch of a piano melody to mimic a human singer or altering the accent of a spoken line.
The innovative model employs a technique called Composable Audio Representation Transformation (ComposableART), enabling seamless sound modifications.
The model aims to support the creative processes in music, film, and video games. Notably, Fugatto can produce unique sounds, like a trumpet imitating a dog bark.
