US Services Sector Soars
The US services sector reached a two-year high in October, with the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) nonmanufacturing PMI increasing from 54.9 to 56.0. The highest level since July 2022.
The new orders index eased to 57.4 from 59.4, while the services employment index rose to 53.0 from 48.1. The strongest performance in over a year.
Domestic economic strength contributed to a 19.2% rise in the trade deficit, which hit $84.4 billion in September. This increase coincided with record imports, totaling $352.3 billion, driven by a surge in consumer goods and capital goods.
The Federal Reserve is expected to lower interest rates to between 4.50% and 4.75%.

Netflix Offices Raided in Paris and Amsterdam
Authorities from France and the Netherlands raided Netflix offices in Paris and Amsterdam as part of an investigation into alleged tax fraud and off-the-books operations.
The probe began in November 2022, focusing on “aggravated tax fraud laundering” and “concealed work in an organized gang.”
Netflix's French unit reported revenue surge to €1.2 billion in 2021, up from just €47 million in 2020. The company paid less than €1 million ($1.1 million) in taxes in France for the years 2019 and 2020 by routing subscriptions through a Dutch subsidiary.
In previous tax disputes, Netflix paid €55.8 million to settle a case in Italy. As of the third quarter of 2024, Netflix reported global revenues of $9.82 billion from 282 million subscribers.

Netanyahu Fires Defense Minister
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant citing a “crisis of trust.”
Gallant disagreed on key issues, including military conscription for ultra-Orthodox citizens and the handling of hostages. He expressed strong concerns about abandoning the 101 hostages held by Hamas.
Netanyahu replaced Gallant with Israel Katz, a close ally, and appointed Gideon Saar as the new foreign minister.
Netanyahu’s actions come as Israel maintains military pressure in Gaza and Lebanon, following the deaths of key commanders from Hamas and Hezbollah.

Walking Pneumonia

Most infections are mild or asymptomatic, affecting around two million people annually. Symptoms include persistent cough, fever, and sore throat. Children aged 2 to 4 have seen a rise in cases from 1% to 7.2%, while those aged 5 to 17 increased from 3.6% to 7.4%.
Walking pneumonia spreads mainly through respiratory droplets and takes 1 to 4 weeks for symptoms to appear.
There is no vaccine, and diagnosis typically requires a nose or throat swab. Treatment usually involves antibiotics like azithromycin.
