Foiled Assassination Plot
The FBI disrupted an Iranian plot to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. Three men were charged in connection to the scheme.
They include Farhad Shakeri, 51, an Iranian citizen, and two New York residents, Carlisle Rivera, 49, and Jonathon Loadholt, 36. Rivera and Loadholt are in custody, while Shakeri remains at large in Iran.
Shakeri discussed his role in a recorded conversation, revealing he was tasked on October 7 with developing a plan to kill Trump and surveil two Jewish Americans. Additionally, Rivera and Loadholt allegedly aimed to kill journalist Masih Alinejad, a critic of the Iranian regime.
The charges against the men include murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder, each carrying up to 10 years in prison, and money-laundering conspiracy, potentially resulting in a 20-year sentence.

Ukraine's Largest Strike on Moscow
Ukraine deployed at least 34 drones on Moscow. The largest drone strike against the Russian capital since the conflict began in 2022.
Flights from three major airports—Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky—were diverted, impacting at least 36 flights. The attacks resulted in five injuries in the Moscow region.
Russia's defense forces shot down a total of 84 Ukrainian drones. They reported intercepting an additional 50 drones in other Western regions.
Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed responsibility for striking an arsenal in the Bryansk region, where 14 drones were reported downed. In retaliation, Russia launched 145 drones, with Ukraine successfully intercepting 62.

US Chips Away at China
The US ordered Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to stop shipments of advanced chips chips of 7 nanometers or more that power AI applications to China.
The US Department of Commerce issued the order after TSMC discovered one of its chips in a Huawei AI processor. TSMC suspended shipments to Chinese chip designer Sophgo due to similar concerns.
In 2022, the Commerce Department had already restricted companies like Nvidia and AMD from exporting top AI chips to China.
The US plans to update export rules to expand restrictions on around 120 Chinese companies involved in chip manufacturing.

Qatar to Expel Hamas Leadership
Qatar plans to expel Hamas's political leadership from Doha. Officials cite a lack of hope in mediating a ceasefire with Israel, especially after the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. This was communicated to Washington earlier this month.
Since Sinwar's death, negotiations have stalled. Hamas rejects a temporary truce, demanding a complete end to hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
In contrast, Israel indicates it might consider a temporary deal to secure the release of hostages but will not agree to an end to the conflict.
The Biden administration pressured Qatar, saying Hamas’s presence in Doha was “no longer viable.”

China’s Trillion Dollar Bailout
China announced a plan to address local government debt, estimated at $5.6 trillion. This initiative comes as lawmakers prepare for possible trade tensions with president-elect Donald Trump.
The International Monetary Fund reported the debt figure could be as high as $8.4 trillion. Policymakers voted to replace hidden debts, allowing for a six trillion yuan increase in the local government debt limit.
Beijing will allocate $558 billion to replace hidden debt and commit $112 billion annually through local government bonds over the next five years.
As Trump’s election raises concerns about tariffs, experts expect that Beijing may consider a more extensive economic stimulus.
