Gaza GroundOp Expands

Israeli forces intensified their ground operations in Gaza this weekend. They encircled the Tel al-Sultan area in Rafah.

Israeli airstrikes targeted Salah al-Badawil and Ismail Barhoum, key members of Hamas’ cabinet. This attack increased the death toll of their leadership to 11 out of 20.

Evacuation orders were issued for residents in Rafah as Israeli troops advanced further into Gaza.

Who is primarily to blame for the civilian toll in Gaza?

Trump Narrows Tariffs Scope

The White House will announce revised tariffs on April 2, dubbed “Liberation Day” by President Trump.

The new plan will focus on reciprocal tariffs, aiming to align US tariffs with those of major trading partners.

These tariffs will target 15 nations with large trade imbalances, referred to as the “dirty 15.” This targeted approach will include China, Canada, Mexico, and nations in the G-20.

Sector-specific tariffs (like automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and chips ) will not be announced on April 2.

Is targeting only countries with trade imbalances (“the dirty 15”) a smart way to handle tariffs — or an oversimplification?

Canada on the Brink

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a snap election for April 28, just ten days after taking office.

Previously, the Liberal Party seemed destined for defeat, but recent polls show them leading against the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre.

Two months ago, the Liberals were projected to finish third. Now, they have a chance for a fourth consecutive term.

Carney wants to distance himself from Justin Trudeau’s unpopular tenure. He has promised to cut the lowest income tax bracket and end the controversial carbon tax.

Does Mark Carney deserve a clean break from Trudeau’s legacy — or should voters hold the party accountable?

23andMe Files for Bankruptcy

23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to initiate a sale process for the company, currently valued at $50 million.

23andMe faces scrutiny over a data breach exposing information from 6.9 million customers in 2023. California’s attorney general urged users to delete their genetic data.

The co-founder and CEO, Anne Wojcicki, resigned. She proposed a bid that slashed the valuation of the company from $3.5 billion at its IPO in 2021 to about $11 million now.

Have you ever submitted your DNA to a genetic testing service (e.g., 23andMe, AncestryDNA)?

Dark Energy Dilemma

Findings from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) suggest that dark energy may not be constant but evolving over time.

Over three years, researchers analyzed data from nearly 15 million galaxies and quasars.

Dark energy, a mysterious force constituting approximately 68% of the universe, could be weakening.

If dark energy continues to weaken, it could alter our cosmological models, potentially leading to a scenario known as the Big Crunch, where the universe might eventually collapse.

Is it more unsettling or exciting that dark energy may be evolving and not constant?

Hybrid Cheese

Researchers unveiled a hybrid cheese that combines dairy and plant proteins. This approach aims to reduce environmental impacts while preserving taste.

This hybrid cheese replaces 25% of casein, the primary milk protein, with pea protein. This ratio retains the cheese's texture and flavor.

Higher pressing techniques helped keep the structure intact due to pea protein's water retention.

This new cheese offers nutritional benefits: it combines essential amino acids and calcium from dairy with dietary fiber from plants.

Would you eat hybrid cheese that combines dairy and plant proteins?
