Google Bets Big on Small Nuclear Reactors

Google ordered six to seven small modular reactors (SMRs) from Kairos Power. These reactors will provide 500MW of low-carbon electricity.

This is the first time a tech company has commissioned new nuclear plants. Google is still considering whether the reactors will feed into the grid or directly power its data centers.

Kairos is developing these reactors with molten salt cooling technology, aiming to build the first 50MW demonstration reactor by 2027.

The US Department of Energy is backing the effort with $300 million.

Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson, won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics. Their research focuses on why some nations thrive while others struggle.

The trio discovered that societies with strong legal systems and democratic governance tend to prosper. In contrast, nations with exploitative institutions face stagnation.

Acemoglu emphasized the importance of democracy. Johnson pointed out economic pressures alienate citizens, affecting democracy's support. Robinson cautioned that repressive systems, such as China's, hinder long-term prosperity.

They compared Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora. Despite similar geography, Arizona boasts higher living standards due to better institutions protecting rights.

NASA Launches Mission to Explore Jupiter's Europa

The Europa Clipper spacecraft launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Florida.

Russia’s Shadow Tankers

Nearly 70% of Russia’s oil exports now use "shadow tankers." These vessels evade restrictions meant to limit the price of Russian crude. 

These tankers are poorly maintained and not insured. Reports indicate that these vessels have been involved in collisions and risky situations.

The Kyiv School of Economics Institute published this analysis. It highlights how these tactics allow Russia to fund its ongoing war against Ukraine.

Efforts by the G7 to enforce price caps have lacked proper enforcement, contributing to this issue.

Adobe’s AI Video Model

Adobe launched its AI video tool, the Firefly Video Model. This allows users to create videos from text prompts. 

They opened access to the Firefly Video Model for those on its waiting list, but no general release date is set. Gatorade and Mattel are already using Adobe's video tools.

Adobe's chief technology officer, Ely Greenfield, highlighted that the aim is to enhance editing by incorporating concepts vital to videographers, such as camera position and motion

The company emphasized its focus on using data it has rights to, ensuring legal use in commercial projects.
