Hamas Leader Eliminated
Israeli forces announced the death of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader and mastermind behind last year’s October 7 terrorist attack on Israel.
The operation took place in Gaza, where troops unintentionally stumbled upon him during a battle. Sinwar, who led Hamas since 2011, was found with weapons, an UNWRA teacher’s passport and 40,000 shekels ($10,000).
Israeli forces didn’t know they were fighting against Sinwar himself. Soldiers discovered his body in the rubble, confirming his identity through dental records and DNA test.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the event as a major victory but warned that the war is not over. He emphasized the need for the release of around 100 hostages still held by Hamas.

Cost of Hurricanes Helene and Milton
Experts estimate total losses could reach $200 billion for Helene alone. So far, Milton's damage is pegged between $50 billion and $60 billion.
Only eight hurricanes have caused more than $50 billion in damages. This puts them alongside hurricanes Katrina, Sandy, and Harvey. For Helene, 95% of the damage lacks insurance coverage.
Flooding is the main culprit for the damages. Studies show hurricanes are getting wetter. For every degree Fahrenheit, clouds can hold 4% more moisture, leading to heavier rain.
The NOAA tracked 396 weather disasters, with 63 being hurricanes.

Ozempic Cuts Opioid and Alcohol Abuse, Study Shows
A study of over 500,000 people found that those using GLP-1 drugs had a 40% lower risk of opioid overdose and a 50% drop in alcohol intoxication.
The study showed that GLP-1 drugs, such as semaglutide, impact the brain’s reward system, potentially reducing cravings.
While Ozempic may lower overdose rates, experts caution that it might not fully stop substance abuse. There were more than 81,000 opioid-related deaths in the US in 2023.
Novo Nordisk, Ozempic’s maker, is exploring additional uses of GLP-1 drugs, including treatments for liver disease and Alzheimer’s.

New Parkinson’s Medicine
A new drug from GeneCode aims to protect and regenerate neurons instead of just replacing dopamine. GeneCode's research shows potential for not only slowing Parkinson’s disease progression but also improving overall quality of life.
This drug, a “GDNF mimetic,” mimics neurotrophic factors and can pass the blood-brain barrier—a breakthrough compared to large proteins that require invasive procedures.
Currently, 10-12 million people live with Parkinson’s, a number that could double in 20 years. New treatments could change this trajectory. In 2019, it caused 329,000 deaths.
