Inflation Mixed Reading

US inflation fell to 2.4% in September, down from 2.5% in August. This is the sixth consecutive month of decline. Economists expected 2.3%, though.

Core inflation, excluding food and energy, rose to 3.3% compared to 3.2% in August. Key drivers included increases in medical care, clothing, and auto insurance.

Gas prices dropped 4.1%, while grocery prices increased by 0.4%. Yearly grocery costs have risen 1.3%. Food costs have soared nearly 25% since the pandemic began.

Apartment rentals grew slower. Economists predict core inflation may fall to 3% by December 2024.

Tesla's Robotaxi Global Debut

Elon Musk revealed Tesla's robotaxi, the Cybercab, which will cost under $30,000. Production is set to begin in 2026.

The Cybercab features no steering wheel or pedals, offering rides for only $0.2 per mile. It will charge wirelessly through inductive charging.

Tesla also introduced the RoboVan, designed for up to 20 passengers or goods transport.

Additionally, Musk showcased Optimus, a humanoid robot that can assist in daily tasks.

Iran's Shadowy Alliances

Experts fear Iran may resort to hiring criminal gangs in Europe to target Israel. Recent incidents include a grenade attack at the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm and a daylight shooting of a Spanish politician.

In Copenhagen, Danish police arrested two young men linked to a gang involved in explosions near the Israeli Embassy.

Criminal networks in Europe, especially in Sweden, the UK, and Germany, have become prime avenues for these operations, often involving teenagers who can be hired for as little as $1,000.

Iran relies on networks of regional crime syndicates for plausible deniability and low-cost operations.

Fisher-Price Swings Linked to Infant Deaths

Fisher-Price recalled more than 2 million infant swings after five tragic suffocation deaths.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that the swings were sold from October 2010 to January 2024. Of the recalled swings, 2.1 million were sold in the US, along with 99,000 in Canada and 500 in Mexico.

These deaths involved infants ages one to three months who used the product for sleep. Infants were unrestrained and had additional bedding materials in the swings, which increase the risk of suffocation.

TD Bankโ€™s Money Laundering Settlement

TD Bank will pay $3 billion in a settlement with US authorities as it plead guilty to money laundering charges.

The bank allowed criminals to move $670 million through its accounts, facilitating illicit activities, including drug trafficking and human trafficking.

Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the bank cultivated an environment ripe for financial crimes, as employees regularly joked about lax security measures. 

Additional penalties for TD Bank include an asset cap, they must undergo independent monitoring and cannot open new branches without approval.
