US Inflation Sees Unforeseen Rise in October
In October, US inflation increased, with consumer prices up 2.6% year-over-year, rising from 2.4% in September. This is the first annual inflation increase in seven months.
The consumer price index (CPI) edged up 0.2%, unchanged from previous months. Core prices, excluding food and energy, also grew by 3.3% annually.
Housing costs contributed more than half of the monthly CPI increase, with shelter costs rising 0.4%. While grocery prices only increased by 0.1%, gas prices fell by 0.9%. Used car prices saw a spike of 2.7% from September to October.

CIA Leaker Arrested
A CIA official, Asif W. Rahman, was charged for leaking highly classified documents. He was arrested by the FBI in Cambodia and is now in federal court in Guam.
The leaked documents detailed Israel's potential military response to a missile attack by Iran earlier this year. These materials originated from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which analyzes data from US spy satellites.
The classified information began circulating on the Telegram app last month. Rahman held a top-secret security clearance.
The FBI confirmed its investigation into the leak. Rahman is charged with two counts of violating the Espionage Act.

October Deficit Surges
In October, the US budget deficit soared to $257 billion. An increase of 287% from $67 billion in October 2023. Adjusted for calendar differences, the deficit was $121 billion, an 89% jump from the previous year.
Tax receipts fell by 19%, totaling $327 billion. Meanwhile, outlays climbed by 24% to $584 billion, driven by higher spending on Social Security, Medicare, and military expenses.

Gold War in Colombia
In the depths of Buriticá, Colombia, Zijin Mining Group faces an assault from illegal miners backed by the Gulf Clan, a drug militia of about 7,000 members.
These miners, numbering around 2,000, infiltrate Zijin's gold mine through a vast network of tunnels, leading to an estimated loss of over 3.2 tons of gold, valued at $200 million.
This illegal activity, driven by surging gold prices—up by 30% this year—has escalated since the 2022 election of President Gustavo Petro.
Over four years, the Gulf Clan has seized more than 60% of Zijin’s mines, costing the company approximately 40 tons of gold. The Colombian government stated that flushing out clandestine miners is beyond their current capacity.
