Gaetz Bows Out of DOJ Nomination

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination as Attorney General. This decision follows allegations of sexual misconduct, including accusations of engaging with a 17-year-old girl, which Gaetz denies.

The Ethics Committee investigated Gaetz for possible misconduct involving sexual violations and obstruction of investigations. Two women testified they were paid for sex by Gaetz, further complicating his nomination.

In place of Gaetz, Trump announced his choice of Pam Bondi, the former Florida Attorney General, to lead the Justice Department.

Trump praised Bondi, highlighting her loyalty and experience. She defended Trump in his first impeachment trial.

Russia's “Oreshnik” Missile

Russia launched its new intermediate-range ballistic missile, “Oreshnik,” at a military facility in Dnipro, Ukraine. This missile is capable of reaching speeds of Mach 10 and can strike targets up to 5,500 kilometers (3,400 miles) away.

Putin claimed that modern Western air defense systems cannot intercept such missiles. This is the first use of an intermediate-range ballistic missile in the war.

US officials reported that Moscow pre-notified them of the strike, and described the missile as being based on the RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile.

Putin warned that Russia retains the right to respond forcefully to attacks from countries supplying weapons to Ukraine.

Powering the Future of Uranium Enrichment

Centrus Energy announced a $60 million expansion in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This facility will enhance the manufacturing of high-tech centrifuges needed for uranium enrichment.

Currently, Russia controls 44% of global uranium enrichment capacity. The US imports 35% of its nuclear fuel from Russia.

Centrus's facility spans 440,000 square feet and produces 40-foot-high centrifuges. The company aims to create 300 new jobs.

This expansion aligns with the US goal to triple nuclear power production by 2050, requiring an additional 200 gigawatts of capacity. The US operates 94 reactors, contributing around 20% of the nation's electricity.

Cannabis Relief for Dementia Patients

Cannabis use among older adults is rising. Approximately 20% of patients seeking cannabis consultations are dementia sufferers. Doctors note that cannabis may reduce anxiety, agitation, and pain, while enhancing sleep and mood.

Research involving 75 Alzheimer’s patients found that 5 mg of synthetic THC significantly decreased agitation. Caregivers are exploring cannabis as an alternative to traditional medications.

However, doctors caution about potential risks, such as drowsiness leading to falls. Most recommend cannabis primarily for those in later stages of dementia.

An ongoing National Institute on Aging study examines the combination of CBD and THC in hospice patients suffering from severe agitation.
