Hurricane Milton struck Florida as a Category 3 storm, with winds reaching 120 mph (205 kph). It made landfall near Siesta Key at 8:30 PM on Wednesday.
The hurricane has already left more than 2.6 million people without power, primarily in Sarasota and Manatee Counties.
As the storm moved inland, it weakened to a Category 1 with winds of 90 mph (145 kph). At least 125 homes were destroyed, primarily in mobile home parks for seniors.

Social Security COLA Increase
In January, 70.6 million individuals will see a smaller Social Security cost-of-living increase. Analysts predict a 2.5% rise for 2025, down from 3.2% in 2024 and an 8.7% spike in 2023.
This translates to an average increase of $48 a month for retirees who receive about $1,920 monthly.

OpenAI’s Restructuring
OpenAI is restructuring as a public benefit corporation (PBC). The PBC model, adopted by fewer than 20 US companies, allows OpenAI to prioritize public benefits alongside shareholder interests.
This new structure could frustrate efforts from major investors like Microsoft if they try to acquire OpenAI or influence its direction.
AI rivals like Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI also use this structure.
OpenAI will retain its not-for-profit arm. This entity will have access to research and technology but will remain independent from the for-profit side.

Reykjavik's Dark Secret
Kalkofnsvegur 2 in Reykjavik, Iceland, hosts the Icelandic Phallological Museum. Yet, this building is also home to Withheld for Privacy, a company that conceals online domain owners' identities.
Perpetrators of identity theft, ransomware, and disinformation operate from this virtual haven.
The surge in these proxy services has created a problem for local authorities, who struggle to reach the company when issues arise.
Withheld for Privacy, launched in 2021 by Namecheap, protects tens of thousands of dubious websites by allowing them to remain hidden.

DeepMind’s Nobel Prize
Demis Hassabis and John Jumper from Google DeepMind received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
They earned this recognition for developing AlphaFold, an AI system that predicts protein structures from amino acid sequences.
Understanding protein shapes is crucial for biochemists in drug discovery. Jumper noted, “We can draw a straight line from what we do to people being healthy.”
Before AlphaFold, predicting these structures took years. Now, it is a matter of minutes. More than 2 million scientists from 190 countries use AlphaFold’s predictions.
