Good morning news friend! Stay ahead of the curve with the stories shaping the future today. 📰🌟
Building the Moon’s Wireless Future
Private companies are rushing to secure radio spectrum on the Moon, aiming to fuel a $151 billion lunar economy. More than 50 applications have been filed with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) since 2010.
The focus is on building wireless infrastructure for the “cislunar economy,” the area between Earth and the Moon. Companies like Intuitive Machines, Firefly Aerospace, and Astrobotic are leading the charge.
Intuitive Machines, for example, has a NASA contract worth up to $4.8 billion to develop a satellite network for Moon-to-Earth data transmission.
Of the 450 lunar missions expected by 2033, half will be private ventures. NASA, China, and Russia are driving longer-term plans for permanent lunar bases. Meanwhile, the private sector targets resource exploration, biomedical research, and manufacturing.

Tensions Surge in Venezuela
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was detained right after a rally against President Nicolás Maduro. Her aides reported that security forces intercepted her convoy amid gunfire.
At 3:21 p.m., Machado's team claimed she had been forcibly taken. Later, a video surfaced in which Machado claimed she was coerced into participating. She stated that she was in a "safe place" and emphasized her commitment to opposing Maduro.
Meanwhile, Maduro's supporters denied any involvement, labeling the incident a fabrication. They assert that Machado's claims aim to stir international outrage.
Protests spread across Venezuela, with roughly 7,000 participants in Caracas. Demonstrators rallied for Edmundo González, who claimed victory in the presidential race. Venezuela’s electoral authority declared Maduro the victor without providing detailed vote counts.

Mini Nuclear Powerhouses
Nuclear companies are shrinking reactors to the size of shipping containers. These “microreactors” promise to deliver zero-carbon energy for data centers, remote communities, and industries like mining and oil exploration.
Westinghouse’s eVinci 8MW microreactor can power 20,000 homes and run autonomously for years. It uses durable Triso fuel and minimal moving parts. A pilot program at the Idaho National Laboratory starts in 2027.
Other players include BWX Technologies and X-energy, backed by $500 million from investors like Amazon. Both are part of the US Department of Defense’s Project Pele, which develops portable reactors deployable via aircraft.
Microreactors to replace diesel in remote mines, ports, and islands, cutting logistical challenges and emissions. With scale, production costs aim for $100-$150 per megawatt hour—competitive for off-grid applications.

Mortgage Rates Surge
The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage reached 6.93% this week, the highest since July. Last week, it was 6.91%. A year ago, the rate averaged 6.66%. Despite modest sales growth in the third quarter, overall home sales remain historically low.
The 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 4.7%, its highest since April. The economy is expanding faster than the Fed's target of 1.8%.
Nonfarm payrolls increased by 160,000 in December. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%. Average hourly earnings rose by 0.3%, maintaining a 4.0% increase year-over-year. Overall, 2.144 million jobs were added in 2024, averaging 179,000 per month.

La Niña is Here
La Niña has officially emerged, starting in December 2024. Meteorologists predict that it will last until April 2025, with a 59% chance of persistence through February-April.
This event is considered weak, with a Niño-3.4 index measured at -0.6°C. Typically, La Niña brings cooler ocean temperatures in the Pacific, leading to varied weather patterns across the US.
During this La Niña, the southern US is expected to experience drier and warmer conditions. In contrast, the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, and Northeast may see above-average precipitation.
Last winter was the warmest on record, primarily due to a strong El Niño. The average temperature for the lower 48 states was 5.4°F above normal. In addition, La Niña can lead to more active hurricane seasons by reducing wind shear in the Atlantic.

Genocide in Sudan
The conflict in Sudan, which has lasted 20 months, has resulted in 150,000 deaths. The US accuses the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of genocide of non-Arab Black Sudanese people, particularly in Darfur.
President Biden labeled their actions as ethnic cleansing, imposing sanctions on Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and seven RSF-linked companies.
About 3 million Sudanese have fled their homes amidst the turmoil, with significant humanitarian crises reported, including famine in refugee camps.
Analysts urge the U.S. to classify the RSF as a terrorist organization to restrict its international movements and funding. Meanwhile, the RSF has denied allegations of genocide, calling the US designation unjust.
