AI Environmental Strains

Microsoft's 2024 Sustainability Report revealed that last year emissions spiked by 29% and water usage increased by 23%. Largely due to the energy demands of new generative AI technologies.

Supply chain and data centers account for 96% of the total emissions. Water usage in 2023 rose to 7.8 million cubic meters.

Microsoft plans to build new data centers that consume zero water for cooling. Additionally, replenishment projects in the Colorado River Basin aim to offset water usage.

On a positive note, Microsoft used 23.6 million MWh of renewable energy in 2023 and designated 15,849 acres as "permanently protected."

Marijuana Reclassification

It also acknowledges that marijuana has less potential for abuse than drugs like heroin and cocaine. The new rule makes marijuana a Schedule III substance, alongside ketamine and some steroids.

Public comments will be taken by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which will then review the rule.

The process signals a shift away from outdated policies.

Spiders' Super Listening Webs

Researchers from Binghamton and Cornell Universities found spiders use their webs like huge eardrums.

Spider webs detect sound from 10 feet away. Unlike human ears that vibrate with air pressure, spider webs move with air flow. This fluid movement makes webs sensitive to sounds.

Dr. Ronald Miles, believes this can lead to new microphone designs. Instead of mimicking human ears, these devices would work like spider webs. They'd sense sound through air motion.

This innovation might help treat hearing loss and also enhance other listening devices.
