OpenAI Considering Charging Thousands for New Models?

OpenAI surpassed 1 million paid users for its business-focused ChatGPT services. A rise from 600,000 users in April.

OpenAI’s survey indicates that 92% of business users report increased productivity, while 88% save time and 75% experience improved creativity.

The company is also considering higher-priced subscriptions for future models, a potential costs of up to $2,000 per month.

The “Strawberry” model is aimed at improving math and reasoning skills. Meanwhile, the “Orion” model is posed to be the next version of the flagship GPT-4o.

OPEC+ Extends Oil Production Cuts 

OPEC+, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, announced an extension of oil production cuts until at least December.

Brent crude prices dropped about 15% since July, now hovering around $72.70 per barrel, the lowest price since May 2023, driven by weak demand from China and Libya’s oil export recovery.

OPEC+ has reduced production by almost 6 million barrels a day in recent years to support prices.

This aims to counteract the effects of increased production in the United States.

Frequent Flyer Schemes Under Fire

The US Transportation Department (DOT) launched an inquiry into the rewards programs of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines.

DOT wants to understand how factors like devaluation of earned rewards and hidden fees affect consumers.

Airline frequent flyer programs generate billions in revenue each year. For instance, Delta reported over 100 million frequent flyer members in 2020, gaining 8.5 million new members in 2022.

Trade group Airlines for America maintains that US airlines are transparent about their programs.

Anthrax Outbreak in Wyoming

An anthrax outbreak in Carbon County, Wyoming, has resulted in the deaths of at least 50 cattle. The first confirmed cases in Wyoming cattle since the 1970s. 

Anthrax was also detected in a moose, the first case in Wyoming wildlife since 1956. The Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory confirmed these diagnoses on August 31.

Anthrax spores naturally exist in Wyoming's soil and can remain dormant for years. A recent drought followed by heavy rainfall, may have triggered the outbreak.

Symptoms of infection in cattle include weakness, staggering, and sudden death. Experts warn that anthrax can transfer from animals to humans.
