OpenAI Whistleblower Dead
Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former OpenAI researcher, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment. Authorities ruled his death a suicide, with no signs of foul play.
In October, Balaji publicly accused OpenAI of using copyrighted materials without authorization. He argued that this practice harmed businesses and undermined the internet ecosystem.
Balaji worked at OpenAI for four years, contributing to data collection for AI training. After leaving in August, he expressed concerns about the legality of AI practices and the negative impact on society.
OpenAI faces numerous lawsuits, including from major news outlets, alleging it used millions of articles to train its AI systems.

ABC Settles Defamation Case with Trump
ABC News agreed to pay $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit with President-elect Donald Trump. The lawsuit stemmed from anchor George Stephanopoulos' false claim that Trump had been found liable for rape during a March 10 segment.
As part of the agreement, ABC will contribute $15 million as a charitable donation to Trump’s future presidential library. The settlement also includes a $1 million payment for Trump's legal fees.
The network issued a statement expressing regret over Stephanopoulos' comments, which were aired during an interview with US Representative Nancy Mace.
ABC must transfer the settlement funds to an escrow account within ten days, eliminating the need for depositions previously scheduled for Trump and Stephanopoulos.

Mystery of Drones
Mysterious drone sightings have raised alarms across New Jersey and neighboring states since November 18. Reports indicate dozens of sightings, particularly over sensitive areas like Picatinny Arsenal and Trump's golf course in Bedminster.
Residents reported large drones, measuring up to 6 feet across, flying in coordinated patterns. Maryland's former governor also reported seeing dozens of large drones near his home.
In total, over 3,000 tips related to the sightings have been submitted to the FBI.
The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented temporary flight restrictions in response. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security state there's no evidence linking the drones to national security threats.

China's Massive Naval Maneuvers
Last week, Taiwan observed China’s largest naval deployment in nearly 30 years. Close to 100 ships, including two-thirds from the PLA Navy, were positioned across the East and South China Seas and beyond Taiwan’s eastern coast.
These movements, which were coordinated over 70 days, involved all three of China’s coastal commands for the first time. Taiwan responded by activating emergency drills and warning of severe threats.
US officials downplayed the activity, calling it a "routine large regional exercise." They noted it did not appear to target Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s recent US visits.
Taiwan’s officials worry this demonstrates Beijing’s ability to blockade the First Island Chain, stretching from Japan to the Philippines.

Apple’s Foldable Future
Apple is building a giant, foldable iPad. This device, measuring 18.8 inches, may launch around 2028. Prototypes display a nearly invisible crease, resembling "two iPad Pros side-by-side."
Rumors suggest a smaller model could debut between 2026 and 2027. Apple aims to merge features of iPads and Macs in this device. iPadOS should evolve to run macOS apps by 2028.
Additionally, Apple is developing a foldable iPhone, but it may not arrive before 2026. Apple's recent patent filings highlight its focus on foldable technology. The company seeks to eliminate the visible crease found in existing models.

Synchron's Non-Surgical Brain-Computer Interfaces
Synchron is leading the charge in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) without the need for invasive surgery. Synchron’s BCI is delivered through the jugular vein, significantly reducing risks and recovery time.
The FDA recognized Synchron’s device as a Breakthrough Device in August 2020. The company has completed two trials: one in Australia involving four patients and another in the US with six participants.
Both trials showed promising results without serious adverse events. Patients successfully used the implants to send text messages, manage online banking, and communicate.
The upcoming third trial planned for 2025 will feature a commercially available system with enhanced processing speeds. Synchron’s implants translate simple actions into computer commands, debunking myths about reading thoughts.
