Just facts, you think for yourself
Do you believe Trump's 100% tariff on foreign films will ultimately help revive the American movie industry?
- 85% No, it will harm the industry
- 15% Yes, it will help revitalize it
Comments | |
---|---|
lin.... | Everything that he is doing is harming us. |
tubi... | not that much need be done. the US film industry has been justifiably overrun by less expensive actors and sets, with equal or better writing(depending on the genre) |
cica... | This is nuts |
vanc... | It will also damage the creative process. There are probably a lot of other factors involved, such as the price of a date night out at the movies. From the pandemic, the comfort of being home. |
kold... | A monetary attack on free speech. |
atli... | Whether it helps or harms US film industry is irrelevant, but it will harm the film as art and further promote US propaganda |
lw63... | I really do no know how we can ever come back from this administration. Trump has no idea of the damage he is doing. Worse yet he doesn’t care. |
sopa... | Tariffs does not protect anything. Tariffs are the road to poverty. |
jimt... | Where a movie is made is only part of the economic model for a production. The US studios are the primary owners/financers of foreign production, and those movies are destined for the US market. In the long run, this level tariff will drive up U.S. studio costs, and on the margin, fewer movies will be made. In the short run, it will paralyze an industry just recovering from the strikes as investors pause to rethink financing and marginal productions will stop temporarily or completely until the economic impact of the tariffs is clear. |
jlcg... | The issue is not distribution of foreigh made films in the US (which has a minimal economic impact, but partial production of Hollywood originated films intended primarily for US distribution in non-US locations |
jchr... | I will just leave. No interest in remaining in an intellectual Hell Hole. |
jimh... | Other countries may boycott American films |
pfor... | Diaper Don has no idea what he is doing and he is clearly not asking for expert opinions. |
1212... | He's also a foreign phobic.... he wants to squash free speech globally. |
kam.... | American writers need some competition to jolt them out of the endless sequels they currently pass off to the public. |
lora... | tariffs are good to level the playing field. However, Hollywood has lost the plot on what people want to watch. People are tired of LQBT movies and plots |
mary... | He gets a phone call from an out of work, over the hill actor and comes up with THIS? |
mary... | Tariffs are not the answer to all problems. |
tmsh... | Once again Trump doesn't understand economics. Aside from the 40% drop in production a huge number of "US made" films have now gone overseas for production. This will only inspire more ill will towards potential buyers. It's ironic that the thing that made Trump powerful--Hollywood--is now in his own line of fire. |
tqui... | Not sure anything can help our film industry until they stop the woke shit and make better movies. |
kimb... | More than half our industry's revenues come from overseas.... just stop the protectionism as every move is a shot to the foot |
msyk... | Can someone explain to me how anyone could reasonably consider the film industry a national security issue? |
drd2... | This is absolutely nuts Trump too dumb to understand the importance of foreign films only an idiot like him would suggest nonsense IWTF |
mbsc... | It's anti-intellectual and another phobia. |
cspi... | Viewers do not care where a film is made, but they are very sensitive to a price point on the ticket. This action will increase the cost of films, and that will be passed down to consumers. |
patc... | Other nations will be quick to reciprocate with similar tariffs, harming the entertainment industry in every country. Trump has unified western democracies like no other US President. Not surprisingly, his 'I'm a victim, we're a victim' anthem doesn't play well on the world stage. |
jllm... | Trump’s case, figuring out what he could put a tax on but the real reason is he wants to collect all the money he can until he figures out a way to put it in his pocket |
bfph... | I actually don’t care. I prefer good entertainment, regardless of where it’s developed. I’d prefer it if Trump did nothing on this topic. I’m sick of the Hollywood elite and don’t support any actions to give them a free ride |
sean... | Blockbuster films that prop up the hollywood studios that can then take risks with smaller films are overly reliant on the international market to be profitable but also when a film flops to try to breakeven |
curt... | Hollywood has moved to Georgia and other states not abroad. |
john... | He doesn’t know what he is doing. |
tart... | As a person who has worked in production in LA for over 20 years—this is not the way. This idea was also brought up by one of my unions which I found chilling. The idea that our president is on the side of unions is ludicrous. |
schu... | These blanket statements with no plan are confusing. Does this include TV? Are American companies shooting overseas exempt? Ao confusing. |
delt... | The problem with Hollywood is not foreign movie competition, but terrible choice of products. Foreign films are a breadth of fresh air to movie goers that have been bombarded with brainless comedies, formulaic stories, sequel madness, teen age blockbusters, and woke content. There is a lack of artistic value, or content relevant to movie goers. Tariffs will not improve Hollywood’s bankruptcy of ideas, greed for blockbuster revenues, and reliance on violence and special effects. Story content is especially lacking. Hollywood has killed itself by its own hand, not by cheaper competition. The audiences have rejected their proliferation of brainless content, and theaters are hurting for ticket sales. They have been augmenting offerings by reviving classics from the ‘50s, ’60’s and ‘70s to entice moviegoers with nostalgic, quality content. Hollywood has also been artificially limiting competition by having greatly reduced, or practically eliminating international features in theaters. Tariffs will not add revenue because it’s the Hollywood movies that the market is rejecting, not the cheaper competition. In order to help Hollywood we need to allow more foreign film to be shown in this country to incentivize them to produce better storylines, better acting, and more connection to the audience. I also fear the same will apply to the food industry, where we are being poisoned by our domestic chemically induced content that has been rejected internationally, and cutting off more wholesome food options. |
sooz... | Sometimes you have to look at your own self and ask how can we do better rather than blame outside sources . |
susa... | Major setbacks already to industry with strikes and covid so people need work . Streaming will make it hard / impossibe to enforce . |
less... | I love this stable genius changing things on a whim, we’re doomed |
larr... | All film, art, concerts, dance, sculpture, are individually and collectively created out of others creativity. That is to enhance ones life uplift their spirits, in any and all forms. It is free speech and free creativity. We cannot tax Free Speech and Creation |
jonh... | Everything the bloated dear leader touches dies. The US film industry is already on its death bed so this will finish it off. |
stan... | American audiences hardly import films today. This will only hurt the American immigrant audiences that enjoy films from places like India. |
cfio... | tariffs do 2 things: 1) impede progress and corporate ability to flex and operate efficiently, and 2) raise prices to the consumer. |
ende... | It will just keep a younger generation from understanding other cultures |
to55... | Trump is Clinically Insane and must be impeached for mental illness |
dian... | History provides ample evidence that imposing tariffs on imported products is not an effective way to improve internal industry. |
keit... | I believe in tariffs |
ebr.... | He's going after all the arts. All. Of. Them. It's sickening. They see no value in diversity. They are fools. |
doct... | Censorship |
john... | The blend of stupidity and evil is astounding. A tariff on foreign films will provoke retaliation (62% of Hollywood income from foreign sales) , hurt associated exports, stifle our creativity, and damage small-scale domestic exhibitors. It’s beyond stupid. It’s evil. |
scoo... | 4 more years of this hell... |
jenn... | Bullying is not the answer |
bike... | This isnt critical to national security and is an obvious over-stepping of Presidential authority |
lawe... | Trump is a dope |
wcrh... | This is an attempt of retribution to the film industry, which is typically critical of him. |
kath... | I think it will help. As explained, it does make sense. Give it time. |
sara... | Moronic, like everything he does |
Are you optimistic about the long-term effects of the tariffs imposed by President Trump?
- 76% No, they will harm the economy
- 24% Yes, they will benefit the economy
Comments | |
---|---|
lora... | Yes, they will benefit the long term economy for the US. People complained for over 50 years as manufacturing jobs left the US. We finally have a President who is trying to fix and the billionaires who have all their money invested in China and India are fighting against it. Including the media who is also bought by China. |
sims... | Tariffs trying to force domestic manufacturing will not work because infrastructure doesn’t support it. Companies will find a different foreign supplier. |
rrrc... | Tariffs are tax on consumers! We are paying the tariffs not the exporting country! |
doct... | No reason to think otherwise |
nick... | In the short term they will hurt, but long term they will help. Trump is playing the long game. |
fc95... | Lower GDP Higher inflation Higher unemployment Lower s&p 500 |
bret... | Shelves for various goods sourced from China will go bare in 4 weeks. Transportation jobs should collapse as there are fewer goods to move. If US jobs become more abundant, wage inflation will push prices higher. Higher prices will cause those with modest wealth to relocate and spend wealth in other countries. If other countries struggle economically because of lost jobs, war becomes more likely. |
roac... | I |
dana... | I believe tariffs will cause economic damage, but I'm also on board with paying attention to the matter of how we overcome the damage of 30+ years of offshoring manufacturing skills and infrastructure investment. It will take at least a decade plus billions of dollars to reshore even a fraction of lost manufacturing capability. China invested heavily in it, and continues to, which can't be "fixed" just by raising tariffs. By the way, I haven't seen nearly enough investigation about where all that tariff money is going now. It's in general fund, but should be earmarked at least partially IMHO to building capacity, training, technology in the US. |
cb10... | It’s common sense that tariffs will harm the economy. |
john... | I am deeply concerned that the demographic who cared about the Americans on the edges of society, the very young, the elderly, the handicapped are frustrated that their efforts weren’t appreciated. And consequently feel that the voters should experience the consequences. The middle class and the marginalized will be collateral damage. |
mskr... | It seems to me that there aren’t enough workers in US now so opening more manufacturing doesn’t seem feasible. Who will work in those industries? |
sara... | Moronic - just like everything he does. |
will... | Tariffs are stupid, as is Trump. |
john... | Free trade has been a major driver of U.S. growth and economic development for decades; we should not change that direction. That said, we should not ignore unreasonable trade policies from other countries. We need a more targeted and thoughtful approach. |
sopa... | Tariffs are the road to poverty. Free Trade benefit the economy. |
grac... | Tariff is yet another tax that the us importer will pass on plus their profit margin to the consumer. How could this possibly help the economy? What is the benefit to a consumer of paying more in a climate of stagnant wages, high cost of living and very high taxes unless you’re wealthy? So consumer confidence takes a hit, consumers buy less and the GDP contracts again. We are in a recession headed to a depression. |
jero... | I want less taxation. Tariffs are going to cost my small business more money than a straight up tax hike. Painful |
tubi... | tariffs are needed to level the production "playing field" for the US workforce. |
pjpa... | $8 TRILLION in investments are already known |
1212... | This idiot president won't listen to the highly educated economists of the free world. He is an embarrassment to our Country. For the first time in my 70 years, I am not a proud American. I also am based over in the Middle East for a contract.... he is the laughing stock over here. |
ronc... | Give Trump the benefit of time and experience. Muzzle the legacy media. |
ebr.... | How does charging people more for the same product help anybody? They are fools. |
jgas... | ridiculous and short sighted process |
ashl... | As a small business owner (manufacturing here in the U.S. as well as importing from China, with a retail/online store selling to wholesale and retail customers worldwide) I am already seeing negative effects on my business. If things continue to decline, we will be forced to lay off employees. |
nanc... | It’s not like manufacturing jobs will improve anytime soon. Retail jobs will tank as a direct result of tariffs. Any employers considering hiring will probably hold back to get a better sense of our future economy. |
mich... | He is an idiot who follows his impulses. |
jllm... | He was right when he said that was Biden’s stock market will see when the next quarter holds |
pfor... | Are the MAGA's starting to see the light yet?? |
lawe... | Tariffs are taxes that will be borne mostly by the working class |
kold... | In six months we will be experiencing the disaster. |
davi... | No. Tarrifs are harmful. I cannot change my response |
jenn... | It's going to ruin small business. He's such a tool |
jeze... | A zero sum game can’t be played in a world economy. The US will end up the big loser in the game in this game. |
atli... | The big news is the loss of manufacturing jobs, the intended beneficiary of Trump's tariff policies. |
Is it ethical for OPEC+ to manipulate oil output to control prices?
- 61% No, it undermines free market principles.
- 39% Yes, it’s a standard market practice.
Comments | |
---|---|
jllm... | It can’t get any more standard than trying to manipulate the market |
lora... | Yes, it has been standard for over 50 years. Lower oil prices will end the wars in Ukraine and Israel and Iran. |
ebr.... | Not at all ethical, but business is not moral. It's always been this way. |
Do you believe that the rise of young extremists is primarily a result of online radicalization?
- 74% Yes, online platforms are the main influence.
- 26% No, it's a result of broader societal issues.
Comments | |
---|---|
joll... | Why are you characterizing extremists specifically as Islamists? When Christian and Jewish extremists enact terrorism on a daily basis! This is clearly biased and not just the facts as you promote your site to be. The West does not desire peace, because of the War profiteering. Therefore it promotes Islamophobia. Islam is not inherently evil, but if you abuse people long enough, they will act like abused people do, either standing up to defend themselves ‘freedom fighters’ or lashing back in horrific attacks similar to the institutionalized terror enacted upon them. Children are not terrorists - children do not understand politics, children do not vote. Children are permanently damaged when you have slaughtered their entire family! Please take stock of all the forms of Daily terrorism on the Palestinian people for the last 77 years and stop the narrative that Oct 7 was the only horrific event! |
tmco... | The economy is being mangled by the ignorant creep in the White House but the Democrats of the last 30 or so years have not seen the forest for the trees. The path has been cleared for the rise of right wing criminals and fools by allowing the economy to run the country as it pursued astronomical profit for the few at the expense of the rest. The system has failed us. Democrats don't seem to understand this even now. The asshole in chief just stepped up taking advantage of the moment for what? For personal gain and self aggrandizement at any cost to anyone else, everyone else. The system needs new blood. Why in Gods name are ancient people like Nancy Pelosi still in Congress? What have they done? -NOTHING THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE! |
msyk... | Online platforms facilitate radicalization, but governmental policies (in the US and elsewhere) motivate or foment openness to radicalization--particularly when those policies are viewed as immoral or unjust. |
zack... | We can no longer deny the effects of what immigration has done to Europe. Calling online platforms the main issue completely ignores the truth. |
pbs7... | And the mainstay media continues to throw gas on the fire by the way sensationalize the news with a liberal bias! |
atli... | Violent games, TV programming play a large part by desensitizing death and the infliction of pain as does the emphasis on competition over cooperation. |
jllm... | Too much information can’t assimilate what’s right and wrong |
danm... | Both can be true, as social issues obviously are the concern but online deep dives in to an echo chamber are a real problem. |
lora... | Yes, young people are using social media too much and not really investigating what is going on in the world. |
noah... | Post-Gaza war? |
avaa... | Both are results |
ebr.... | It's a result of local zoning, I believe. After the Second World War, tons of people had babies and started moving outward instead of up. Zoning in the city was primarily made for low-income folks then. The more affluent whites moved out to the suburbs and left the mess for someone else to clean up. Racism, zoning, and the loss of adults responsible for the community all contributed to where we are now. Young extremists get caught up in what they're surrounded by and have no desire to explore what lies beyond their state or maybe a state or two over. Kids need exposure to culture, not just these cookie-cutter houses and outdoor mall developments that all look the same. Weird Stepford vibes. Ew. |
lw63... | Absolutely. I am beginning to really believe that the internet is mostly a curse rather than a blessing. The amount of influence these conspiracy theorists have on the forming generation is horrific. |
sims... | I blame platforms to spread it but I blame parents for not providing structure and direction allowing online influencers to raise their children |
divs... | Social determinants of health, lack of economic opportunity causing scarcity mentality, lack of access towards basic human rights, radicalization of youth by overusing words opportunistically, and portraying a scarcity mentality by deepening the 'us vs them' and using online platforms as a medium to amplify the messages |
ham3... | social media is a problem |
sara... | Hyper capitalism is not working for most people - the unrest we see may shade conservative but it is really a reaction to systems that don't work for anyone but the very few very rich |
doct... | Online is bad but reflects society spiraling |
lawe... | Fake news via social media is a major source of misinformation |
nanc... | There are certainly social issues playing a part, but radical online platforms are like pouring fuel on a fire. |
cmga... | The radicalization online of these extremest groups is the main reason for the increase in plot attempts. The sad thing is it is primarily those who have not thought things through that are becoming victims of this type of radicalization. |
How significant do you think the role of gut health is in overall aging?
- 95% Very significant
- 5% Not significant
Comments | |
---|---|
ebr.... | The body, mind, emotions, and nervous system are all connected. |
nanc... | So many people I know are struggling with digestive problems that seem to get worse as they age. Some are dealing with issues that drastically change their ability to carry on a normal lifestyle. |
john... | We are just grazing the ur face of the microbiome. |
jllm... | When the alternative is removal, anything is positive |
doct... | My opinion is irrelevant. This is the realm of science |
mary... | Gut health affects me |
Do you believe that genetics plays a bigger role in midlife weight gain than lifestyle choices?
- 61% No, lifestyle choices matter more
- 39% Yes, genetics is the primary factor
Comments | |
---|---|
mcri... | Americans make poor food choices. |
kold... | "Choices," when referring to lifestyle, is a presumptive term. Most people's lifestyles are derived from their economic circumstances, their upbringing, and many other matters out of their control. Some choices can help, but if you think it's all about choice, then why are so many poor people obese? You think they choose that? |
jllm... | How can you not believe that? |
tmon... | I think it’s a combination of both. |
cand... | As I age I find that it is harder and harder to control eating and weight gain. I believe genetics plays a huge role in this. |
nanc... | Lifestyle choices all the way. Experienced this myself. |
lora... | People eat too much fast food with added calories. Alcohol and drugs use is also a factor especially with retirees. |
ebr.... | They both matter—probably 50/50 or 60/40. External factors also matter, like surgery. Scar tissue doesn't decrease , i.e., women who have C-sections. |
tubi... | people become stagnant. many people equate a day's work to good exercise. |
cica... | Let’s face it once again it’s both/and. You can’t escape your genes. And your lifestyle contributes. |
doct... | Much more. But it does depend on your family too, which may be genetic at least in part |
