Is the market's reaction to Trump’s tariff stance rational given global dependencies — or emotionally overblown?
- 62% Rational
- 35% Overblown
- 3% Other

---|---|
palm... | Trump is in over his head |
albe... | Trump has given a clear message of his objectives. Huge money is to be made. I have made 20% |
stev... | This situation emphasizes that global markets do need the USA; and the playing field needs rebalancing for the sake of USA long term sustainability and everyone's benefit. |
dest... | He's fixing unsound policy; it will ultimately be for the best. People need to stop overreacting. |
join... | Negotiations between the US and other countries may result in tariff reductions on both sides, just as recently occurred with Israel. |
ayo.... | It is impossible to see the logic in these actions, so this is a logical reaction. |
mrse... | Both rational and fearful |
john... | Trump doesn’t care. |
maed... | There’s a new President in office. We need to give his plan time to see if it’s worth the pain. Over-hyperventilating by media isn’t helpful nor productive! |
bret... | Tariffs destroy value. Hurts all parties involved. Also expedites job destruction as any new factories will be more autonomous. Fewer jobs all around the world. More unemployed increases probability of social unrest. AI is on the verge of eliminating millions of jobs and will eventually eliminate 75% of all jobs once autonomous robots are perfected. This was the last chance for people to get their financial house in order. The wealth destruction ensures that will never happen. I was planning on retirement this year, instead I'm taking my salary to another country where prices are dramatically lower. |
stac... | Most of the reaction, I feel is an emotional one, triggered by dislike for Donald Trump. |
tomp... | Isn’t |
lake... | It will take time…. Relax. |
only... | The real purpose in the tariffs has been to get our trading partners to the table to negotiate to make trade more fair for the US economy. Given that last week Israel was the first to get the message and announced they would drop all tariffs of US goods, and that the EU just announced that they want to target negotiating a tariff-free trade agreement, this all indicates exactly what the administration has been after for a long time. To aright our trade agreements so that we are not being raped any longer by our trading partners. Only short-sighted people are seeing this as a market threat with gloom and doom predictions. |
eche... | Someone had to do it. Trump had to do it now at the beginning. Why wait? We need a stable and more fair and balanced market. Go down to to high. It's painful but that's just the way it is. We lost more than some money but we (husband and I) believe that they're doing the right thing. I mean nothing Pelosi, Obama, and Clinton didn't want to get done before. Also Why would we want Trump to fail? if he fails, we fail. |
jfig... | The tariffs announced will lead to negotiations and should ultimately result in a more balanced and fair system. All countries will negotiate because the US economy is still the world’s largest. |
gise... | Maybe we should take a breath and wait to see what the world economies will do . A correction might trigger manufacturing in the US with new jobs . |
jdba... | Capitalism is built on the premise that “Tomorrow is going to be better”. Reckless policies undermine that confidence. |
gasu... | The equity market has been too high for a long time. Over-valuations have needed correcting The new tariffs are just the trigger for this long over-due event. Sort of like the earthquake in Myanmar. |
tomd... | WAY overblown IMO. It is clear the situation is very dynamic, and the market seems to be pricing in the worst-case scenario (terrifs sustaining for a long time). I believe this scenario is HIGHLY unlikely, as I believe it is VERY clear that Trump is clearly in negotiation mode. |
atli... | I suspect that the billionaires surrounding Trump will make a fortune from this while the rest of us suffer. |
amia... | have yet to take effect or be negotiated |
jeff... | Traders don’t know how to handle anxiety especially the general public. The tariffs are necessary to level global playing field. Furthermore, where was the outcry about letting in millions of undocumented immigrants that tax payers had to support without our knowledge which further increased our debt and made our country less safe. Its time to cut out these cancers so the US can grow economically stronger and more secure. |
ham3... | Rational which is emotionally and eco onically driven. Gotta love the human condition. |
youn... | Read the question wrong at first. My answer is the market is rational. Trump is petty and overblown. |
lawe... | The tariffs are insane. Uncertainty has triggered fear that the glitches inserted into the market will tank it. |
drne... | Lost all trust in the republicans after this. Worst than the pandemic. All self induced. We just do it to ourselves. No thought of the fifth and sixth order of effects. |
jjpl... | Trump cannot control other countries with his blackmail tactics. Now the world will suffer from his idiocy as much as America. But at least the other countries have rational leaders. |
skea... | How can Trump be stopped before he bankrupts the world? |
theb... | All economists warned Trump that putting tariffs in place would hurt our economy. It has hurt most Americans. Trump is too busy golfing in Florida on our tax dollar. |
hrob... | Lowering the prices of stock on purpose so the wealthy can come in and buy it cheaper! |
jjgr... | People are so stupid. Like sheep being fed by the media. Buyers market now. Time to get many deals |
chri... | Trump must go! |
ebr.... | How does one person, a childish narcissist at that, have the power to disrupt the entire globe? He's not worth the time. |
sram... | I feel it’s a short term issue and it’s a knee jerk reaction without physically feeling any monetary loss. We have already experienced higher prices. We have the choice to choose another product. We have to change things up and I feel this will be a good step long term. |
medl... | Both |
jllm... | Companies are in the business to make money and in tern make me money. If they make less because of tariffs then I make less and unfortunately I have to go back to work. Oops no jobs. |
cica... | Trump is basically crazy. These tariffs have nothing to do with politics or economics. It’s all about him and his sick ego |
pfor... | Just another poor decision by Diaper Don. When you are surrounded by unqualified idiots and led by an idiot, you get this.... |
trag... | Market players both large and small have every reason to proceed with great caution in a volatile market where tariffs are based in power plays and retribution |
reps... | Militant pushback choices to cause more unstable systems so America/Trump is blamed again & again… |
marc... | The tariffs were expected and should have been priced in already. For the investors to react this strongly before even waiting to see the net effects is not only irrational but irresponsible. |
reil... | emotions are so heightened right now. It's hard to tell anything. People have been very reactive based on how they're feeling rather than the facts are. Universally people are feeling down and responding based on this. It also seems that, generally speaking, Democrats have put themselves into panic mode and are experiencing fight or flight...or play dead. |
jju3... | Buy from us company and you have no tariff’s |
ben.... | I’m sure there will be an impact if the tariff positions are held but it’s way too early for this level of reaction. Then again lowering interest rates may have been the desired effect. |
nanc... | He’s causing chaos throughout the world. For what? |
food... | Why did we expect anything else? He went bankrupt six times. Hope this lands softly eventually. |
ljob... | Can’t decide |
rgar... | Trump campained on this and gave everybody time to be prepaired. I guess nobody believed him. The markets have been over valued and are adjusting. What he is doing has to be done. It just like your household budget. When more money goes out than comes in you have some options. You can balance your budget, borrow money, or go bankrupt. Even if you can borrow money you eventually will go bankrupt. So there is really only two options, seems to me balancing the budget is better than bankruptcy. |
Should stronger-than-expected job growth reduce concerns about a potential recession — or are macro risks still too high to ignore?
- 77% Risks still too high
- 23% Reduce concerns
Comments | |
---|---|
maed... | Is the sky really falling? |
mdul... | We should recognize that jobs reports are always then corrected, usually down, in the months following the initial report. Also, the hundreds of thousands of federal government employees won't show up on unemployment counts until their benefits end months from now. There are numerous other reasons to believe that recession is at a much higher risk than it was just before Trump took office so we should take no comfort in that one data point that suggests otherwise. |
trag... | Job growth numbers may reflect employment prior to the massive layoffs in the federal government and the ripple effect of withdrawing funds from universities and clawing back on pandemic relief funds that had not expired. Maybe some of these folks will occupy the jobs vacated by deported immigrants |
eled... | That report reflects results prior to shock policy changes. |
nanc... | The job growth numbers are from before Trump announced the huge tariffs, which will cause businesses to pull back, at least until they see how it affects them. |
aubr... | Why are the returning strikers included at all. That is not job growth! |
bret... | Jobs will be revised down. The impact of government cuts has not been flushed through and tariff impact hasn't even started. Recession is guaranteed, depression is possible. |
lawe... | Job growth was in the works before insanity struck |
arou... | COME ONE DO BETTER... the number of jobs lost in the government are more than the jobs gained in March- it is a NET LOSS. |
jllm... | Years of education, history and just plain looking at the numbers, tells me the white doesn’t have a clue |
stev... | When the USA economy is strong, the world economy will be strong. Patience is a virtue! |
How familiar are you with the semiconductor industry (e.g., chip design, memory markets, fabs)?
- 58% Not familiar
- 34% Somewhat familiar
- 8% Very familiar
Comments | |
---|---|
stev... | I have been employed in the semiconductor industry for my entire career since graduation from Texas A&M University in 1984. I understand the dynamics of the chip business as well as the manufacturing side. |
trag... | Relatives and friends have been in the semiconductor industry |
jllm... | It’s a shame I don’t know more on companies I’m invested in, |
Do you believe VAT gives other countries an unfair advantage over U.S. exporters — or is the criticism exaggerated?
- 63% Exaggerated concern
- 31% Unfair advantage
- 7% Other
Comments | |
---|---|
mich... | VAT is a layered sales tax that ends with the consumer. It has no impact on the US. Trump doesn’t understand complex issues particularly when they are layered. |
airm... | Each USA State charges Sales Tax on all consumer purchases. Sales Tax is VAT by another name. |
andr... | Only one thing matters: "VAT applies equally to domestic and imported goods". Where's the lack of fairness? |
paul... | All you need to see is what country is the richest in the world. It’s the USA! Not hard to figure out really |
ham3... | Uncertain |
stev... | The Value Added Tax from other countries essentially increases their revenue by camouflaging their lower labor rates. |
davi... | VAT doesn't discriminate. It's a tax for everyone in the country where it's imposed. If I were to buy something from the EU while in the US, I would not pay the VAT, however. |
bret... | VAT is not unfair. The Trump administration is clueless. This is economic terrorism against other countries and against the US. |
clem... | Whether levied both internally and externally, since the US does not have it is a deterrent to exporters. The EU is a massive overlay to each country like our federal government that needs to be shrunk and VAT goes away. |
tubi... | definitely an unfair trade practice against US manufacturers. tariffs should equally be applied |
arth... | Don’t understand why US doesn’t just do a value added tax, the same as the other 170 countries? Of course, I’m not an economist. |
suet... | Refunds of VAT are available when leaving countries so it doesn’t hurt travelers |
jllm... | Tough to know consequences without knowledge of the big picture |
rgar... | It seems obviouse that it is an unfair tax if it is not reciprical. |
ende... | This is a basic sales tax. If trump really wanted to make a level playing field for America he would not let outside products be sold without a three year warranty to protect the consumer |
cynl... | Im not sure about that. I don't have enough information |
kimk... | How can a tax that is put on all goods, local and imported, be unfair to importers (US exporters)? |
salv... | Vats is used domestically and internationally. Excluding imports from the US would give US products an unfair advantage |
dsal... | We have sales tax which does the same |
mbul... | VAT is a sales tax. Valued Added Tax = sales tax. Have we never heard of a sales tax in America? |
lynn... | Seems like sales tax |
ayo.... | The US charges sales tax. Not much different from VAT |
nanc... | Instead of tariffs, the U.S. should have a VAT tax. |
mdul... | It is also interesting to note that the 10% baseline tariff across all nations that Trump has put in place can be considered a consumption tax or, said another way, a VAT. American consumers pay the tariffs so they pay that additional amount. One could look at this and note that Trump is putting in place one of the largest tax increases for the American consumer ever enacted, while ensuring that he cuts the taxes for the wealthiest. A progressive tax involves a tax rate that increases or progresses as taxable income increases. It imposes a lower tax rate on low-income earners and a higher rate on those with higher incomes. Trump's tax plan, though, can be considered a regressive tax system, where the tax most affects those with the lowest incomes. |
ebr.... | Trump is not good at business and is not qualified to be in office. Please don't give him the press. |
joni... | It gives an advantage, but it's not unfair. |
Should experimental treatments like RAD52 inhibitors be offered earlier in the treatment process — or reserved for cases where others fail?
- 92% Offered earlier
- 8% Reserved for later
Comments | |
---|---|
lawe... | Patients need to be advised of risks |
ebr.... | If we have something that works, then do it. When cancer is concerned, you've gotta throw the kitchen sink at it anyway, so if we can prevent so much suffering, then go ahead and try. |
lhap... | You have not provided enough information to answer the question. Your description is a gross oversimplification. |
lpri... | If people want to try it, it should be their choice after they receive all the information. |
magg... | As an ovarian cancer survivor I would have welcomed the chance to skip 5 debilitating chemo treatments. |
maed... | But Buyer Beware is applicable here! |
nanc... | If I had the cancer, I’d want to be offered that treatment. |
jllm... | I’ll never understand why doctors always put off radical treatment until it’s to late |
andr... | Depending on the damage that could come from the cure, if there are minimal side effects from the treatment and harvesting raw material for the treatment itself is not gathered through the course of some highly unethical process, why yes, utilize it sooner, the technology will get better and cheaper the field will broaden and we will all benefit from it. |
rgar... | if there is something that can help save peoples lives it should be offered if they ar willing to try it. The way cancer research is handled is crazy. I lost a close friend taking placebos in a controlled test. Maybe they could have saved her. |
trag... | We need to do everything possible to treat cancer as early as possible. Unfortunately the drastic cuts to HHS, CDC and universities will greatly reduce research into the efficacy of 5ths and other cancer treatmentsm |
Would you be comfortable eating tuna treated with a chemical solution if it reduces mercury — or prefer untreated tuna despite higher mercury levels?
- 51% Treated tuna
- 49% Untreated tuna
Comments | |
---|---|
rgar... | Lets just not eat the Tuna, mercury or chemicals, not much of a choice |
nanc... | Since I am an older person, I don’t have the same risks of mercury buildup in my body. I might feel differently if I was younger. |
rgto... | How many chemicals have we added to food, only to find out that they cause as much harm as what they were added to fix? |
davi... | Have studies been done on the affect of the chemical on humans? |
dest... | Too many chemicals in our food already. They are not healthy. It's better to have the Mercury. |
clem... | Untreated as it sounds good, however, any chemical is trading one bad for another. It doesn't get rid of 100% and while 25% sounds big, it may not be significant. |
ebr.... | I don't eat a lot of fish anyway. Except spicy tuna rolls in sushi! |
jllm... | There goes another one, F if you do, F if you don’t |
lawe... | First, I would want to see data on the effects of cysteine. |
maed... | Let’s be assured the “treatment” is worth the risk! |
