mdul...There is no doubt whatsoever that these indictments Trump has demanded are purely political vengeance. So much so that he dismissed the professionals who do this every day and who refused to indict since the charges are bogus. Not to be deterred, though, he replaced one interim US Attorney with another interim in violation of the law. Now, the only question remaining is to see what kind of twisted logic the SCOTUS will use to find a way to let Trump do what he wants. I say "twisted" since there is no legally valid way to do so and, moreover, the law requires that the government cannot refile these charges against Comey and James since the courts recognized prosecutors used to rush indictments through grand juries that they knew were flawed just before statutes of limitations were to expire (like in these cases) to give them additional runway. The courts stopped that practice by disallowing new indictments when those first filed were nullified by the courts. Let's see how SCOTUS will give Trump what he wants in this case.

sara...I read the court documents. Your question is worded to reflect feelings not fact. The fact is that the Attorney General can only appoint someone as an interim federal attorney for 120 days. The attorney who resigned was interim and his term ended in May. After the 120 days, that position can only be filled by a district judge. Body’s extension of the first interim as well as the appointment of the current one arguing Comey and James’s case was illegally assigned by Bondi instead of the district court judge, therefore she could not bring indictments. Plus Comey statute of limitations re the charges had run out. Feelings will reflect political biases, but I do find it interesting.

mdul...With Trump having had to reverse his stance on most of the craziest tariffs he put in place, and the courts soon to decide what he can and cannot do unilaterally with respect to tariffs, it is likely the EU will draw out the process to see how things are going. Current indications are that Trump's historic unpopularity is not receding and his strangle hold on the Republican Party is not quite as unshakable as it once was. With all that in mind, the EU might even have some hope that the midterms will further weaken Trump's authoritarian regime and signal a return to cogent and intelligent leadership.
