The subways are dismal all around if free how does that address the already much needed upkeep expenses? darl...Nothing is free as we all should know. I don’t live in NY anymore. I grew up there and raised my family there. We owned a successful business and payed plenty of taxes over 32 years. We shared our success with our employees and family. I dealt with many increases in taxes, healthcare and social security, being a small business. What has happened over the years is sad. In New York, it’s not because of Trump or even Republicans. It’s been over greed . Nothing is free ! New Yorkers will continue to pay for those that have never had worked and have played the system. I’m glad I don’t live there anymore . More importantly, I pray we come together again as a nation. This is a very bad time.

rmas...Freeze rents and landlords will sell the properties and the people who can't afford to buy will have fewer homes or apts. to rent. The repairs to rentals will be let go when gov. squeezes the profit out on being a good landlord and there will be fewer rentals available. Let the landlords make a living and pay taxes to the government. Then everybody wins. This never works out for anyone. Look at Cuba after Castro came in. Only the rich and big gov. survived. Someone has to pay for these free things that Zohran is talking about.

mdul...Politics is the art of the possible. That references that politics is about achieving what is practical and attainable, rather than what is ideal or perfect. Can Mamdani achieve even some of that progressive platform? I don't know and I'm not sure that is even what was on the ballot last night. The record voter turnout and the thrashing Mamdani enabled might well have been more a reflection of the complete repudiation of Trump that we saw across every race and question last night.

nanc...Free buses that are on time would be a good start and would be doable. New Mexico just begun universal childcare. It’s a big part of why people can’t afford to feed their families in this country. If childcare costs eat up whatever they’re earning, their only option is to stay home and try to make do with government safety net programs. Instead of giving corporations tax breaks, they could have given them incentives to offer child care to their employees.

sara...It must be executed with care - focusing not on vision alone, but on execution at ground level. Keeping goals focused, testing ideas before adopting broad programs etc. The goals are what is needed everywhere in the US - this is a test and must be executed with broad alliances, expert advisory support and at a pace that can be accommodated while still focusing on the day to day. New York is an incredibly large and complex city, but I believe Mamdani will do this - and I'm eager to see successful results.

You can’t tell me everyone in NYC is struggling and is on the verge of leaving because they can’t afford it. bjef...In general, the hubs related to major airports were originally built away from the cities. So people move out and surround them. Then they complain about noise, safety or whatever. No one has ever said: we're going to build a brand new air terminal in the middle of New York City.

Obesity is the root cause of so many horrendous medical outcomes that anything we can do to reduce obesity means lower health care costs for all of us. The message of "diet and exercise" has proven ineffective or, at the beery least, insufficient. Those that feel they need to take these drugs and do so even without knowing the long term effects should have affordable access, for their sakes and all of our benefit.

All of these diseases mentioned, and those not mentioned, could be reduced by losing weight. Provide weight loss meds to those who are diagnosed with morbid obesity. It would save millions of dollars in the long run and we'd have a healthier America.
neal...For most people, absolutely not. Only if the patient has some legitimate medical issue that would prevent them from losing weight by diet and lifestyle changes. Otherwise, stop stuffing your faces and get off your behinds, if you really want to lose weight you will. If you can’t muster up the determination and/or will power to save yourself, then I guess that’s nature taking care of itself.

Cheney was certainly not perfect but he was a true Republican when that was something of which someone could be proud. His daughter, Liz, continued his legacy of speaking out for the betterment of the country and not just towing the party line. Republicans should wish they had such leadership now.
andr...It's absurd that anyone would have a favorable view of this guy with the clarity of hindsight. The Iraq war was an unmitigated disaster, killing ~1M people and costing the American taxpayer ~$3T. You have to be brainwashed beyond recognition or a straight up psychopath to justify that sort of financial and human cost. It's important to realize that most of MSM and politicians supported this dumpster fire, including The Economist, once one of the highest quality publications.
