Just facts, you think for yourself
Do you believe Zohran Mamdani’s progressive platform (rent freeze, free buses, universal childcare) is a practical approach to NYC’s problems, or too idealistic?
- 64% Too idealistic and risky
- 28% Practical and needed
- 8% Unsure

| bonv... | You are enabling too many people with free stuff |
| bren... | Where’s the money coming from? |
| valk... | The age old question…who is paying for this ??? |
| chri... | Insane |
| andr... | It will be a disaster, but we will see more and more of this as AI proliferates, destroys jobs, and increases the wealth of the top 1%. |
| cger... | This is a sad day for America and the beginning of it's demise. We have raised a generation of slovenly, lazy and incompetent people who want to be taken care of by the government from cradle to grave. Empires don't last forever and last even shorter when the rot comes from within. Welcome to the beginning of the end, actually the beginning was when Obama took the Presidency. |
| stev... | Socialism has never worked - ever - the rich move - the poor suffer and the dumb voted for it |
| carr... | Democrats are destroying this great country. |
| jfp7... | Its about maturity, can you push hard in a valid direction and then compromize back to a more reasonable first step |
| atli... | Idealism yes, socialism yes, the people over the oligarchs yes, the future yes |
| livi... | How could New Yorkers vote for that man? His ideology is scary. I believe, with the popular vote, he will run that city into the ground. Nothing is free, someone will have to pay for it, and it will come in the form of new tax bills. |
| cmor... | Am a lifetime democrat but disagree that anything should be free, rather than considering sliding scale based on net income for childcare. The subways are dismal all around if free how does that address the already much needed upkeep expenses? I read the article in the Times(?)which projected costs for each of the “freebie’s” being touted, wholly exorbitant and unclear how these services can be supported in the long run.Pipe dreams… |
| saca... | Sounds great but who pays for it ?? |
| jeff... | The majority of your readers are clearly ideological descendants of Confederate traitors and racists. |
| jill... | Promises he cant deliver |
| jste... | Just do the math |
| pjpa... | Vegas odds put a 9% mass exodus of the 1% of NYC taxpayers that pay 90% of all taxes ……. NYC is already broke & the socialist agenda/giveaways aren’t going to help |
| darl... | Nothing is free as we all should know. I don’t live in NY anymore. I grew up there and raised my family there. We owned a successful business and payed plenty of taxes over 32 years. We shared our success with our employees and family. I dealt with many increases in taxes, healthcare and social security, being a small business. What has happened over the years is sad. In New York, it’s not because of Trump or even Republicans. It’s been over greed . Nothing is free ! New Yorkers will continue to pay for those that have never had worked and have played the system. I’m glad I don’t live there anymore . More importantly, I pray we come together again as a nation. This is a very bad time. |
| taly... | He cannot follow through on any of his campaign promises. |
| cove... | New York and California are now a lost cause. |
| bher... | He won’t be able to enact some of his more radical ideas due to NY State Laws, but he will chase more large businesses out if the city, and they likely won’t be coming back. |
| kelt... | Good luck new yorkers, you are going to need it |
| jpch... | He is a communist that supports terrorists and is anti-Semitic. The top 1% of income earners already pay 48% of the NYC tax burden. I pray for the people of NYC. Gotham has fallen. The money shall leave, and the city shall become the next Detroit. |
| shan... | Tax the rich! |
| ksay... | It is unrealistic, where would the money come from to fund these programs. NYC relies on mass transportation. |
| ende... | It is idealist and risky but also much needed relief even if it isn’t free but at least affordable it will be a turn around in the right direction |
| lore... | Socialism is never the answer to our problems |
| tina... | Perhaps too idealistic, but most ideas are a starting point to move from, not the end result. I say bravo. |
| geof... | Will require significant tax increases and people are not going to like that. On the other hand, many businesses will leave NYC, which will bring housing prices down. |
| miah... | He will take millions from NYers and give back hundreds |
| rmas... | Freeze rents and landlords will sell the properties and the people who can't afford to buy will have fewer homes or apts. to rent. The repairs to rentals will be let go when gov. squeezes the profit out on being a good landlord and there will be fewer rentals available. Let the landlords make a living and pay taxes to the government. Then everybody wins. This never works out for anyone. Look at Cuba after Castro came in. Only the rich and big gov. survived. Someone has to pay for these free things that Zohran is talking about. |
| avaa... | It's a good start but we need food prices to come down |
| jenn... | Every politician over promises with the hope of getting something done to make day to day living more affordable. It will be difficult, but let’s hope he moves things in the right direction because life is not sustainable in NYC the way it is going. |
| anne... | I believe it is addressing key issues in NYC however implementation may prove to be very difficult if not impossible. |
| mbsb... | It aims to view NYC as a whole, where the city’s success is built on the ability of all of its citizens to gainfully participate in society. |
| mdul... | Politics is the art of the possible. That references that politics is about achieving what is practical and attainable, rather than what is ideal or perfect. Can Mamdani achieve even some of that progressive platform? I don't know and I'm not sure that is even what was on the ballot last night. The record voter turnout and the thrashing Mamdani enabled might well have been more a reflection of the complete repudiation of Trump that we saw across every race and question last night. |
| stab... | More fairness. |
| nanc... | Free buses that are on time would be a good start and would be doable. New Mexico just begun universal childcare. It’s a big part of why people can’t afford to feed their families in this country. If childcare costs eat up whatever they’re earning, their only option is to stay home and try to make do with government safety net programs. Instead of giving corporations tax breaks, they could have given them incentives to offer child care to their employees. |
| watt... | Socialism doesn't work. |
| sara... | It must be executed with care - focusing not on vision alone, but on execution at ground level. Keeping goals focused, testing ideas before adopting broad programs etc. The goals are what is needed everywhere in the US - this is a test and must be executed with broad alliances, expert advisory support and at a pace that can be accommodated while still focusing on the day to day. New York is an incredibly large and complex city, but I believe Mamdani will do this - and I'm eager to see successful results. |
| cath... | Just visit Cuba! |
| jere... | He is a piece of garbage that shouldn’t be in this country! |
| gmar... | I believe he’s one step away from promoting communism. Not a good experiment. |
| sque... | People love empty promises. It’s not realistic and he should concentrate on the real problems like fair pay and unemployment so people DON’T have to rely on the government to carry them |
| gmfe... | You somehow "forgot" to mention that he's an antisemitic pro Hamas loving Islamist funded by the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Dig into that organization. |
| ksta... | Who pays for "Free?" |
| sher... | The problem with him is being antisemitic! None of his other ideas will work. Sad times for NYC! |
| mjak... | God help NYC!!! |
| jmha... | Socialism in government in the world’s most capitalist city should be a very interesting experiment. |
| btaw... | What a BS question. This was about change from the corrupt administration in place in NYC, and how that corruption was supported by DC. While his ideas are very progressive, his overall agenda is to support all the citizens of NYC. |
| bret... | Rent freeze should be easy, property prices peaked in most areas and are dropping in a number of locations. Free busses should improve efficiency but is obviously costly |
| msol... | He needs a plan to pay for these promises. Taxing the rich is not a solution |
| jf56... | Idiotic |
| mken... | These aren't extreme positions. The democratic party will need to understand this if they wish to win elections. |
| hrub... | I don’t disagree that everyone wants lower rent, cheaper groceries, etc… but it is an empty promise and unsupported opportunity. You can’t tell me everyone in NYC is struggling and is on the verge of leaving because they can’t afford it. There is obviously a massive range of wealth in the city, but there are bigger problems than general costs that would vastly improve quality of life for New Yorkers and the country. |
| crai... | Poor choices so I had to pick the most negative. It is not idealistic at all. A clear move away from capitalism toward communism which has not worked successfully anywhere in the history of the earth. If you can’t afford to live in NYC move. I moved out of NYS for that reason. |
| mary... | It's a joke. He has zero experience and zero credibility. |
| jame... | Socialism does not work!!!!! |
| bfph... | His win is simply about people wanting free stuff and avoiding work. Sad day for America. Good luck NY!!! |
| jkdi... | Find one country where socialism is good long term for the people…. Venezuela…not so good …Canada ..not so good. . .. China…. Not so good. … should I continue?.. |
| walk... | They can’t afford themselves now…. |
| h2op... | The funding has to come from somewhere. |
| robb... | ANY IDIOT WOULD KNOW THIS ISN'T GOOD. NOTHING IS, OR CAN BE FREE. I LOOK FORWARD TO THE CALL TO PRAYER IN THE STREETS OF NYC AS THEY DO IN 2 OF MY NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES IN MICHIGAN. SUCH NICE PEOPLE. IF THEY CAN MAKE IT THERE THEY WILL MAKE IT EVERYWHERE. WOMEN ESPECIALLY SHOULD BE CONCERNED. |
| alai... | Freezing rent has been shown not to work long term. |
| ja4w... | Someone has to pay for all of that. Who? How? |
Given the crash’s impact on the surrounding community, should air cargo hubs be relocated farther from densely populated areas?
- 52% No
- 48% Yes
| Comments | |
|---|---|
| kim.... | Shouldn't residential housing be set back miles from the airport? Somewhere is a county planning board that approved housing |
| tany... | We need high speed rail like China and Europe. The US is rapidly becoming like a 3rd world country. |
| cger... | An engine failure where the engine falls off is catastrophic no matter where or who is flying. These cargo planes are BIG planes requiring long runways and large facilities. Are you suggesting increasing shipping costs to build these separate facilities??? It's all well and good until you have to actually pay for these absurd ideas. |
| danh... | The hubs attract jobs, jobs attract home buyers, home buyers attract growth; so where ever the hub is built will end up being more populated. |
| brad... | Hysteria about a once in a million event doesn't help. |
| jlcg... | It doesn't matter if it is a cargo hub or a major passenger airport. But the overall building rules for airport surroundings, and especially in the flight paths at both ends of runways, should certainly be reviewed. |
| jste... | You would add cost to the last mile |
| btaw... | Who comes up with these questions, Mrs Smith's 6th grade class?? |
| bjef... | In general, the hubs related to major airports were originally built away from the cities. So people move out and surround them. Then they complain about noise, safety or whatever. No one has ever said: we're going to build a brand new air terminal in the middle of New York City. |
| rxra... | The majority of cargo flights occur at night when fewer aircraft are in the air. They are less likely to have an issue than a commercial passenger flight. |
| snbu... | THIS WOULD ONLY ADD AN ADDITIONAL EXPENSE TO THEIR SERVICES. IT WOULDN'T BE SIMPLE AT ALL. |
Should government programs like Medicare and Medicaid cover weight loss drugs primarily intended to treat obesity?
- 79% Yes
- 21% No
| Comments | |
|---|---|
| cger... | Self inflicted injuries should NOT be covered by everyone else. STOP eating so damn much you 78.4% fat and lazy Americans. |
| jste... | You are a fat ass because you are gluttonous |
| walk... | Apparently there is a connected benefit |
| mdul... | We have no idea of what bribes Trump demanded before seeking to make these deals and they don't even matter in the broader scope. Obesity is the root cause of so many horrendous medical outcomes that anything we can do to reduce obesity means lower health care costs for all of us. The message of "diet and exercise" has proven ineffective or, at the beery least, insufficient. Those that feel they need to take these drugs and do so even without knowing the long term effects should have affordable access, for their sakes and all of our benefit. |
| oneo... | Decreasing obesity will help prevent many other diseases from occurring - it is estimated that obesity is the 2nd leading cause of preventable death in the US. |
| atli... | The issue here is Trump selling the product and mixing his presidency with personal profit. Replace this mafia tactic with non profit, public single payer health care for all. |
| v13f... | We continue to see it as an illness, we got to this point due to bad diets, poor exercise habits, more sedentary work among other things. |
| rowl... | Obesity is a leading factor in other health and quality of life issues. Including mental health and self esteem. Using weight loss drugs to take obesity out of the equation can contribute to better overall health. |
| mary... | Obesity leads to other diseases such as heart disease. This will save lives and reduce other health care costs |
| akyg... | Obesity is bad for your health |
| mbsb... | Oops, I meant to vote yes. |
| nanc... | If it reduces diabetes and heart disease, it will save in the long run. |
| bnig... | Yes for the persons whose weight has become a medical issue (diabetes, heart disease) |
| bjef... | This is a no brainer. You want to stop all the secondary disease and expense from obesity, then this is much cheaper than dialysis 3 days a week for example. |
| rker... | Obesity is a number one cause for many diseases and millions of dollars are spent on individuals who are diagnosed with heart disease, with diabetes, and kidney disease caused by high blood. All of these diseases mentioned, and those not mentioned, could be reduced by losing weight. Provide weight loss meds to those who are diagnosed with morbid obesity. It would save millions of dollars in the long run and we'd have a healthier America. |
| neal... | For most people, absolutely not. Only if the patient has some legitimate medical issue that would prevent them from losing weight by diet and lifestyle changes. Otherwise, stop stuffing your faces and get off your behinds, if you really want to lose weight you will. If you can’t muster up the determination and/or will power to save yourself, then I guess that’s nature taking care of itself. |
Wha is you opinion on Dick Cheney's legacy?
- 53% Negative
- 25% Positive
- 22% Neutral
| Comments | |
|---|---|
| mdul... | "The evil men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones." Cheney was certainly not perfect but he was a true Republican when that was something of which someone could be proud. His daughter, Liz, continued his legacy of speaking out for the betterment of the country and not just towing the party line. Republicans should wish they had such leadership now. |
| andr... | It's absurd that anyone would have a favorable view of this guy with the clarity of hindsight. The Iraq war was an unmitigated disaster, killing ~1M people and costing the American taxpayer ~$3T. You have to be brainwashed beyond recognition or a straight up psychopath to justify that sort of financial and human cost. It's important to realize that most of MSM and politicians supported this dumpster fire, including The Economist, once one of the highest quality publications. |
| mtfa... | Cheney was a mixed bag of tricks, for sure |
| bjef... | Unlike some people, he wasn't evil. He had beliefs but he operated within a system. so I'd say more neutral. Being a war hawk, in my opinion, is not good, but then some wars were necessary. There's a balance. He part of one side of the balance. |
| tomd... | His success record as defense secretary speaks for itself. |
| debb... | One of the worst war mongers in US history. And that’s saying a lot given we had Al Haig and Oli North in Administrations also. |
| cger... | He got us into the Iraq war under false pretenses and raised a traitorous daughter. |
| hrub... | Warmongers from the dark ages need to be replaced by those who love peace, diplomacy, cooperation. |
| sara... | He was a cold man, a liar and a controlling egotist who repeatedly chose the wrong course when faced with strategic or moral choices. His last minute anti-Trump stance does nothing to undo the massive damage his lies, stinginess, corruption (remember those maps carving up Iraq in advance of the supposedly necessary war?) and autocratic tendencies visited upon our country. |
| pake... | Regardless of political affiliation, an elected official served our country is to be respected. |
| bbre... | HRC labeled him Darth Vader . It fits |
| robs... | From my Republican perspective, Dick Cheney was reckless and wrong about some of the biggest decisions in the history of mankind, not to mention generally careless as a human being. Cheny proved that if you create a vacuum in the Middle East by taking out a murderous Islamic dictator, that vacuum will be filled by murderous Islamic terrorists, only worse because ISIS live-streamed its beheadings of hundreds of people. |
| nanc... | Though he finally did the right thing by denouncing trump, he was instrumental in causing this huge divide between parties and was the perpetrator of so much pain and suffering all over the world. |
| cbro... | My opinion is all of the above He made mistakes in a life of service |
| dave... | He’s one of the key components for the unnecessary ack invasion. |
| jmbe... | He did tremendous damage to this country as Vice President, but it pales in comparison to the atrocities which Trump is committing. Cheney redeemed himself by courageously calling out Trump for the lying, self-promoting, vindictive tyrant he is. This is something few Republicans have found the moral integrity or backbone to do. |
Which aspect of this technology do you find more promising?
- 85% Using sunlight and CO₂ directly to make fuels
- 15% Producing pharmaceuticals and plastics from the formate fuel
| Comments | |
|---|---|
| walk... | I question the ability to make fuel in substantial quantities to have an impact |
| nanc... | The fuel aspect will help more initially, but getting rid of plastics is also important. |
| atli... | This could help in the world fight against climate change and even the US despite its lack of action. |
| sara... | Its critically important to replace fossil fuels far beyond their uses for energy. Pharmaceuticals are a huge user of fossil fuels as building blocks - we need urgently to replace this use as we attempt to throttle back on the detructive use of fossil fuels. |
Would you prefer a natural fatty acid-based serum over existing chemical treatments despite limited human testing so far?
- 96% Yes
- 4% No
| Comments | |
|---|---|
| trim... | Halt thee research by shifting the funding to research on actual illnesses. |
| doct... | Unfortunately, rodent studies very commonly do not translate into similar outcomes in humans. Sometimes they do. |
| halv... | Obviously an all natural alternative should limit unforeseen side effects. That’s the only way to entice me to join a focus group or clinical trial. |
