lhay...It's hard to know who's the bad guy. Europe grossly took over whole countries, then the US. Europe and US has (and continues to) destroy entire populations and their environment. Is China bad for this? I don't know. We all need to get together to stop corporate greed first.

Bottom line: Trump has been totally out-maneuvered in this ill-conceived, and ill managed trade war. tjcn...Trump continues to bully his way thru trade issues with higher tariffs rather than negotiating win-win agreements that will benefit all countries in the long run. Trade partners may have to give him concessions in the short term because of a stronger US competitive advantage now; but behind the scenes the leaders of other countries are forging new economic partnerships.

mdul...I think people that take just a small step back to consider where we have come to must get a least a wry smile. Trump has done everything he possibly could to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while he deploys his personal militia into US cities he dislikes and threatens deploying standing military to further escalate his suppression of free speech. And, now he is reverting to a nuclear arms race that one of the greatest POTUS of all time, Ronald Reagan, managed to diplomatically pull the world back from the brink of a nuclear war. Trump remains at the bottom of every list of best POTUS of all time and his hopes of getting a Nobel Peace Prize seem further away than ever.
bjef...If nuclear detonations are meant, then negotiations with everyone to prevent all such tests as before are necessary. We already have global warming. Oh yeah, let's just add radiation to the mix. If just testing delivery systems, then we're already firing off rockets anyway so why interject the nuclear part. bjef...At the moment, AI just adds to my workload as I have to clean up its mistakes. I have no interest in AI art, chat companions or whatever someone thinks I want. In my job, work was often halted because some safety monitoring device glitched shutting down a machine that was otherwise fully capable of functioning. So far, my experience with AI has been that it only adds another failure point, only soon, there will be no way to override it's mistakes. As a pilot I know that "George" as we fondly call our autopilots, can track a straight line better than I can because it senses electrons and I have to wait until I visually see a needle move. But if you've ever been in a plane when "George" just suddenly cuts out or, even worse, decides to do something you don't expect, you can be dead real quick. The makers of George have all been paid and are safe in their beds and I'd be in a smoking wreckage. I'm sorry, but there are real reasons I don't trust AI mainly because I can't react quickly enough to correct something that could kill me. Sort of like driverless Teslas if you get my meaning. A lot of Tesla drivers are driving no more. But old Elon is still rich. Am I the only one who sees this disconnect?

fnpn...The only caveat to private philanthropy is they can push a political agenda. The Gates foundation is infamous for its left, leaning activities. However, I feel like the good completely weighs the bad.

keit...Private foundations and research institutes do great work! They are focused on specific diseases that need focused effort. But the total amount available through those foundations is a small fraction of what NIH invests at the many academic centers where a much larger number of researchers are working to fight a much broader array of diseases.
kbki...It is better to have a collective agreement through a government as to the programs to be funded. Private funding depends on the whim of one wealthy individual. Because taxation of wealthy individuals has been slashed, the government is underfunded to provide money to different programs.
jwon...I think they are both needed. Both the government and private philanthropists have large assets, but they each have a different sphere of influence (and different motivations and benefits of their generosity).
