Just facts, you think for yourself

Should the Fed respond to political requests (e.g., from the President) when deciding interest rates?

  • 89% No
  • 8% Yes
  • 2% Unsure

nanc...Sadly, trump has been adding his own loyalists to the Fed and we can expect less independence going forward. That’s not even factoring in the Supreme Court rulings, which look to give this administration even greater control.
mann...Fed's decision should not be subject to politics
chri...Respond with their middle fingers!
susa...Could we just let expertise do the job - so we might trust someone !
kvas...No they should not as a general matter. The should especially not be driven by the idiot currently in the White House.
mhan...The Fed should be responsible for a stabile currency and banking system and should get out of the business of GDP and interest rate pegging. Inflation target should be zero.
rck....The FOMC's independence and careful management of it's dual mandate is the only reason our economy hasn't completely collapsed in the face of Congress's total failure to manage fiscal policy. If they lose that, we're dead.
mdul...If there has ever been an argument supporting the view that the Fed should be wholly isolated from political pressures, it is Donald Trump. Is there anything he's done that hasn't proven to be plain wrong and often needed to be reversed? Very few things, indeed, and all of his economic policies have fallen into that category. Imagine that he's sitting watching TV news in the middle of the night and decides that he needs to do something bold for whatever reason. There you go - his new US economic policy. Egads.
jra9...We need less easing not more. The challenge is the wealth concentration and unfettered AI activity. Not interest rates.
bcar...Why take business advice from a clown who bankrupted a casino?
bjef...Trump only wants to save Wall Street and, of course, his investments. Wall Street, at the moment, is totally disconnected with the situation confronting the average American who probably could care less about Wall Street, especially with all the insider trading going on in Congress. Lowering interest rates won't get people hired if the businesses simply save the money making their stock look more valuable: hence Wall Street is disconnected from reality.
cger...When the FED is wrong, they need to be corrected. The Fed has one arrow in its quiver for EVERYTHING. Normally, inflation is consumer driven. The skyrocketing 9% inflation during the Biden administration was NOT consumer spending it was from the GOVERNMENT spending too much, ($2T vote buying scheme by Democrats)!! so the fed raising rates just cost America more money, it did not control inflation, just make it worse.
mojo...Most Presidents have a narrow view of how the local economy works. They have an even narrower view of how the global economy affects our local economy. They have “Advisors” who have been compromised by external sources to move the economy in a direction that favors one group over another. Of all the Agencies, the FED needs to remain independent.
rita...Economic stability requires Fed independence.
spr....Go back and read what happened in 1929 with pressure on the Fed Reserve…that produced a wonderful outcome!!
rich...The Fed should not be influenced by political pressure.
cynt...They’re supposed to react to the economy, not political pressure.
mend...Lower interest rates will raise inflation at this point I think it’s a foolish move I think the Fed needs to look forward and backwards for data to support the move. The best way to eliminate price pressures is to lower pricing not reduce interest rates.
usct...This places the Fed at the whims of politics over economics. And in this present reality, into the hands of a politician who lives in an alternative reality.
ginm...Fed should be independent, voting based on economic facts, never presidential agenda
mary...He is a psychopath
tspo...That’s the road to rampant inflation. The fed must be independent and data-driven.
milt...Not the best question, give. An obvious answer: he’ll no!
mrse...The Fed should and must be independent!
jjai...Hell NO. A president, and especially this one, will want to juice the economy favorably for short term gain, especially before elections. Long term that could cripple the economy, but they do not care as they have either been re-elected or moved on to the various boards and book deals that ex-presidents always receive.
tyle...Administration must stay out of the whole fed!
norm...It is an independent agency, they can listen to recommendations, but not brow beat into a decision.
kold...The Fed is for the people, not the oligarchy.
jeda...I wonder if the vote would be this one sided under a different president. The sitting president, whom ever that is, he’s laying out financial policy and trade policy for the country. I’m not saying they should do what he says, but they should always consider what the president says.
rjfe...Politics is the harm that the Fed wad intended to avoid.
robb...If a President has responsibility for a country's economy, and his re-election hangs in the balance, they should have some say in what the Fed does. Not total say, but if his economic plan makes sense i.e., not flooding the country with useless benefit sucking illegals, his input should be considered as any Board Member.
mike...Should not respond to political requests.
kakr...Seperation of powers!
ksit...The Federal Reserve should be able to do what they think is best for the country. Not best for the President. If everyone (politicians) came to their job and did what was best for the country as a whole, we would be so much better off!
benn...Separation of powers from political whim
lora...The Feds should take this into account along with all other data. It was obvious that the Feds gave Harris a boost last November prior to the elections when the economy was worse off. the Feds have become political since Powell has been the Chairman.
karl...The Fed needs to remain independent, and main focus on inflation! If independence is gone we no longer have a use for the Fed!

Do you believe SpaceX’s $1.5 trillion valuation for its IPO is realistic or overly optimistic?

  • 68% Overly optimistic
  • 22% Realistic
  • 10% Unsure

bjef...The only way Starlink can increase revenues to make up for the hype is to raise prices. It's run by Elon Musk, the world's most stable and consistent force for good! What can possibly go wrong: other than cutting off all service to Ukraine, raising rates, satellites becoming obsolete or degraded(basically guaranteed so they will have to be continuously replaced, etc.
rjfe...A typical hype of marketing driven by Musk for the gullible investors inspired by dreams, not results.
lora...This depends on the investor. If you believe the valuation and you have money to invest, you should invest. If you do not like the valuation do not invest. You should not care what others do but do what you think and want to do.
cger...Space is the new Frontier.
tuck...They’ve become like China. Make up numbers and get people to buy in
wrtb...Elon is delusional
vick...The bigger question is why are taxpayers funding private profits?
kvas...Can't speak to SpaceX, but I'm confident that Elon Muskmelon Head is overvalued.
bret...Competition is heating up in the space arena. Investors buying SpaceX will likely show negative returns.
rita...It's Elon Musk.
ejf5...A reason the 1.5 trillion valuation could be realistic is that SpaceX is basically turning itself into the core infrastructure for space. They are not just a launch company. They are building and owning the entire stack. Falcon 9 reuse has pushed launch costs so far down that no one else is even close. Most competitors only survive because of government support. That gives SpaceX real pricing power long term even if they keep prices low on paper. Then you have Starlink, which is a recurring revenue engine. It has global reach, high switching costs, and massive upside in aviation, maritime, defense, and underserved areas. Once the network fully matures it will feel more like a telecom business than an aerospace add on. They also build everything in-house. Rockets, engines, satellites, software, ground systems. The more they launch the cheaper it gets. That compounding advantage is hard to match and widens every year. So the valuation isn’t just about today. It’s about SpaceX controlling access to orbit plus owning a global communications network that relies on that access. When you look at it that way 1.5 trillion starts to look less crazy.
kari...Not a lot of competition at this point

Would you approve a teen social media ban in the US?

  • 88% Yes
  • 8% No
  • 4% Other

EmailComments
atli...... and regulate the rest.
alex...Yeah but why tf is you YouTube lumped in there with the others haha?
pete...It would be more beneficial if the social media companies were obliged to moderate their content.
kari...Consider it an age limit on use.
bjef...I think there are serious concerns, but I'd also favor SIGNIFICANT cross country penalties for internet predators, influencers, etc. when someone is harmed because of what they've said and that should be doubled with all the garbage AI stuff out there misleading teens.
what...Social media is soda for the brain. The more we know about its effects the more we need to ditch it altogether.
cger...Social media for children has caused nothing but problems.
nanc...It’s a toxic environment for teens and very unhealthy.
tuck...Absolutely, social media does much more harm than good. Put down those phones, use your own mind and go outside to play
boba...I think a total ban is draconian. Make the social media companies use available tech to restrict content and time spent for those under 16.
tomm...It’s a false sense of reality
lora...Parents need to take responsibility. If you do not want your teen doing social media, take away the smart phone. There are still plenty of mobile phones that do not have access to social media.
susa...The damage has been well documented . Social media is proven to be a "harmful substance" just like others that we restrict.
btaw...Dunno
newb...The social media companies recklessly allowing harmful material to reach vulnerable children. This ban may be followed by outlawing VPNs.
deaf...Bans have never worked throughout history. Why don’t we teach teens how to use social media positively instead of taking it away. We ban alcohol from teens but they manage to still use it???
milt...Hard to say. Free speech is at the of our constitution. But the media negatives on young people is harmful. I’d be for limits not a broad band.
jra9...I think we have the advantage of seeing what works and doesn't in Australia. Bans have generally proven difficult and not effective in many cases. So while I like the idea - it is frustrating that taking away all aspects of social media rather than better work by social media companies to root out bullying, etc. They know every second you are on the platform what you are looking at and doing. Feels like they have the power to make these healthier platforms.
aunt...A ban wouldn't be indicated IF social media companies would be held accountable for the damage done to our teens and pre-teens
kvas...The internet has become the Devil incarnate. Anything that can be done to rein it in should be done.
ksit...Social media is a bad education! A
rita...Why give bullies another platform?
tdhu...The data showing the harm of social media on the mental health of children and teens is very convincing. The spike in suicide attempts, anxiety disorders, and depressive disorders skyrocketed after the introduction of the iPhone nearly 20 years ago.

Should the U.S. permit the export of advanced AI chips like Nvidia’s H200 to China despite potential security risks?

  • 73% No
  • 24% Yes
  • 3% Other

lora...Yes, this is free trade. I do not understand people who are against tariffs but want regulation to control trade. People need to educate themselves and quit relying on the fake news to control their lives.
dmhu...We are selling them rope to hang us!
joeg...We should just give them blueprints of everything. They copy and steal everything. Patents and copyrights mean nothing to them. Corporate greed has already allowed them to buy our companies and real estate
cger...No, let the Chinese figure it out the old fashion way, stealing it through espionage and "honey pots".
rita...It's only happening because there's a benefit to DJT.
mdul...Yes, the government should allow the export with the security procedures they are putting in place. The more pertinent question, though, is whether China will actually buy the chips with the backdoor capabilities in place. Nowhere near as clear but likely not.
cynt...It’s not always about the money, contrary to how Trump operates.
wint...After all the posturing with tariffs, Trump has not negotiated anything of value for the American people. He just keeps giving away the store.
chri...The policy of controlling China through restrictions has failed. When facing restrictions they build their own, often cheaper and equivalent products. Politicians could use a basic class on economics.
ent....I mean what could possibly go wrong?
atli...Trade between China The US should be 100% tariff free recognizing the benefits to both countries and the world including peace.
ksit...Trump just placed America at risk.
bret...Banning sales to China increases the probability of a Chinese company out competing Navidia. Selling the chips, reduces the need for a local chip provider. Should the government be picking specific products and companies to levy export tariffs?
robe...The Chinese will get the chip one way or another….they will also duplicate.
bjef...No brainer, Trump calls for MAGA, AI superiority, and tries to look very tough, but basically gave China what it wanted and the one thing that actually makes America Great to make it look like he was a winner. I hope people figure out he'll sell us out, as he already has again and again, for a penny and then he'll eliminate the penny so now it's a nickel!

If routine MRI scans could detect early signs of Alzheimer’s before symptoms appear, should all adults over 50 undergo such scans regularly?

  • 71% Yes
  • 17% No
  • 12% Unsure

EmailComments
spr....We can’t afford our medical costs now. Should consider for only high risk categories
aunt...IF physicians did a mental acuity test at an early age (50?) with re-tests every 2-3 years, early changes could be identified and then an MRI warranted. MRI scans are VERY expensive and should not be used for "pre-screening"
mdul...What people would do once forewarned is not as clear but having the information on this terrible disease is better than wondering and worrying on the way to dementia.
cger...What's the use, you are just going to forget you ever had one anyway
etha...They are pricey and only really useful if there is an effective treatment that could be started early.
atli...Depends on the treatment consequences. Needs more study.
rmas...If a cure is available, the screenings would be essential.
mojo...This is one of the many reasons health care is so expensive. This survey has 54% of people in favor of getting a medical procedure that they most likely do not need. You need to review your symptoms with your doctor or a specialist. Is there anyone in your bloodline with Alzheimer’s? If not, your risk is low. People need to get educated about medical issues.
rita...We would not have had the vilification of Biden nor the scourge of Trump.
twin...Yes!
cynt...Only if there is some kind of treatment available to slow or alleviate the disease.
dmmd...In my opinion we need to establish clinical trials first to evaluate accuracy, cost (and who is going to pay for it), rates of false-positives and false-negatives, what proven effective (by clinical trials) treatments are available and how much do they cost (and who is going to pay for it). This has been attempted previously with "Total Body MRI's" and results have not been as expected; e.g. false positives leading to unnecessary procedures which may result in morbidity and even mortality. Routine total body MRI's are no longer recommended.
lora...There will be a cost and if people think they can afford these MRI scans they should do it. However, they should not expect some else to pay for it thru Obamacare or increased taxes.
rita...The damage is already done.
imap...Should be a personal choice between patient, doctor and possibly family members.
mart...Until we have some form of intervention that prevents development of Alzheimer's in patients who show via MRI some increased probability of developing the disease, the diagnostic doesn't help. It's very expensive. If a treatment/prevention is identified, then the screening MRIs would be warranted.
ent....There are still too many variables to say that regular screening MRI would be of value.

What do you believe is the primary cause of gout?

  • 49% Both equally
  • 26% Lifestyle factors (diet, alcohol)
  • 25% Genetics

EmailComments
spr....Gout can be controlled by diet and use of allopurinol. First gout attack at 26 while in good health. Once put on allopurinol..no attacks since. ..now 75.
p_gs...I'm a 2nd generation male with Gout and my son at the same age experienced his first gout attack. In addition, my siblings both male and female experienced some form of Gout.
cger...Humans love to overconsume.
bjef...Now that we have this information, any bets RFK, Jr will do anything to actually help American's health. Don't worry, 50% of children will be dying soon before age 8 due to the reemergence of childhood diseases. Gout won't be an issue. (50% survival to age 8 pre vaccines is something every parent should be looking at very closely, but hey, Trump wants to make America great again by letting all its children die. Makes perfect sense to me!)
