bkav... | Your question is to narrow and focused on more government regulation which by default infringes on the rights of law abiding citizens. |
abby... | I hate that you’ve separated these into 2 categories. Both should be a priority! BUT if made to choose, I choose the stricter gun laws, because if there were full background checks and more time and research done into people buying one and for what - as well as continued checks to own said gun - these people might never have the tools needed to commit these horrible crimes (regardless of whether they’re getting help or not) |
cand... | I laugh everytime I see stricter gun control! Such idiot to think that someone choosing to do harm will not get their hands on a gun! |
brya... | Death penalty |
blik... | Don't be stupid. No gun control law would ever stop a madman hell bent on killing people. These nuts just move on to speeding vehicle attacks, arson, bombs, or the jihadi style knife and machete assaults. It was good guys with guns who "responded" to this madman. Sober up. |
irab... | Give everyone and anyone as many guns as they want with no permits necessary. 2d Amendment! |
ende... | Both |
klmi... | Prosecute criminals and put them in jail rather than allowing them out on bail or a slap on their wrists for crimes. |
vale... | Gun laws are already strict. How about enforcing what we have and get help for the wackos doing these horrible things. The gun isn’t the problem, it’s stupid questions like this and this kind of thinking! |
jill... | Attacks only on first responders? How about children in schools?? Festivals? Parades? Movie theaters? The list goes on. The USA is a violent country because of the lack of gun regulations and control. |
jmte... | I think a combination of both stricter laws as well as a better understanding of the human condition along with WAYS TO NOT ALLOW situations to get to this point are in order. If that means more mental health checks/balances…then so be it. It is not just a cut and dry “one cure fixes all problems” issue. |
cwno... | Most people with mental health problems are not a danger to anyone but themselves. I’ve had anxiety problems for 50 years and never dreamt of hurting anyone. |
drro... | Americans are being taught to hate through biased news media and propaganda in our academia. These distorted attacks have negative consequences on our mental health and harmony. |
csbr... | MAGA white supremacists are domestic terrorists. |
pwwe... | And more mental health evaluations. We also need to find out why our nation is so violent and obsessed with guns and what we can do about it. I understand this nation like many others was founded upon violence and exploitation but we don't have 50 years to study the problems, neither do we need quick fixes that won't lead to change but serious studies that acknowledge or problems and shortcomings so that we can provide adequate and just solutions. The blame game is not working, too many innocent lives being lost . |
avaa... | You need both in today's environment |
fcse... | Being able to identify these snipers is impossible unless they already have a social media presence. This one may have had a vendetta against fire fighters. Setting a fire seems like a way to snare them. |
et.c... | Taking away guns from people fit to own them changes nothing. Criminals aren’t concerned with laws. It’s illegal to steal but criminals still steal. |
stru... | Everyone, including firefighters, should carry guns. Nothing discourages an attacker better than an immediate lethal response. |
jlcg... | All of the above, and more: media voluntary restraint protocole, new approach governing doctor/patient confidentiality rules in case of agresivity suspicions, ... |
pjca... | this country needs to bring back mental institutions. The gun violence started when everybody was mainstreamed into society. |
twin... | Stricter gun controls for sure! However, these extremists seem to be the ones doing harm to people and our beautiful land. How do we find them BEFORE they destroy is the question!!!!! We need to focus on that and quit focusing on innocent immigrants! |
drro... | There is not a rise in gun violence, this is a misleading lie. Read the national crime statistics, violent crime as been in the decline in America for quite some time, YOU ARE LIARS |
mark... | Both. Stricter gun control laws are the first priority, but mental health and threat assessment programs are also needed. |
kim.... | Guns are too easily accessible to purchase/own. |
beth... | more training required to purchase a firearm |
derr... | Start with God, the Bible, and teach children from a young age to Love and respect others. Some people need special help but a bunch need to be Loved and taught to honor others. |
maty... | Get rid of Donald Trump and his hate policies |
aran... | How about BOTH stricter gun control laws AND more mental health and threat assessment programs? And, seriously, "acted alone" except for the glamorization of brutality ongoing in the MAGA world? No other nut jobs in Coeur d'Alene? |
amyr... | Criminals or those wishing to do harm will always be able to get guns. Stricter gun laws will only hurt law abiding citizens ability to defend themselves or participate in game management. (Eg wild hog management) We need to target individuals that are a threat and provide more law enforcement and or ICE resources to prevent these attacks before they occur. |
dels... | Better enforcement of the laws we have |
clau... | MORE MENTAL HEALTH and more reaching out to people! Know your neighbor! We need stick together. |
lanc... | Easy access to guns is the #1 problem. Eliminate access and treat mental health issues. |
vick... | VET people before gun sales - Stronger gun control laws! |
jame... | people kill people. what do you propose, restrict vehicles, knives and fists too? |
kaco... | Mental health is the largest underfunded and under recognized need in America. With proper funding and less wasteful bureaucratic spending, we could adequately diagnose and treat many disorders appropriately. Stop pulling funding from legitimate needs |
suzy... | Too many violent crimes are happening with firearms |
btaw... | Not one or the other, both! Better gun control laws and more MH programs. |
dhag... | The ‘genie’ is already out of the bottle with regard to per capita gun availability in the US. Stricter gun control laws would likely only affect future, legal purchases. A more effective mitigation would be lowering political rhetoric, and doubling-down on wellness/mental health services and crisis intervention programs. |
wigg... | Both plus the death penalty executed within a month |
elle... | Both of the above are necessary. |
gban... | Access to guns or a lack of it, is far easier than trying to fix mentally deranged people. Most countries have the latter but not the former. |
srch... | The nuts and criminals will not obey any gun control laws. They disarm the law abiders. What if the firemen were armed? |
stev... | Gun control isn’t the answer. |
alex... | He used a "high power rifle" aka, a hunting rifle. Unless you're planning on banning *every* gun and starting a civil war, stricter gun laws wouldn't have done anything to help here |
onec... | both stricter gun control laws and mental health programs |
sand... | First two options require government rulings. Takes way too long. Or, it never occurs. Could posssibly have police assigned to each precinct similar to those safety officers in schools. |
mary... | Regulate right wing media |
kvas... | Both |
mada... | Stricter gun control laws and checks on how to legally get a gun and ammunition. Gun owner should do regular mental health checks for the duration of ownership to insure they are fit to own and use a gun |
bhad... | Neither one is ever going to happen. Republicans can't conceive of gun control. Nobody is ever going to PAY for comprehensive mental health services and besides you never ever know what someone else is thinking and the internet is so influential. |
char... | We need both |
klra... | There are tons of Gun Control laws already on the books. Crazy people do not care about laws. Criminals don't care about laws. Mental health is a big problem in this country and needs to be addressed. |
kmas... | Gun control laws won’t stop bad people from getting guns. It will just leave the rest of us more vulnerable to their attacks. So many of these attacks are committed by people with mental health issues. We need to get more mental health programs to help them. I’m sure it would prevent a lot of attacks. |
tsza... | Rational control on guns is objective and applies equally to everyone, no different than rational controls on who can drive a 1-1/2 ton car. Identifying mental health issues would require something like sobriety check-points before guns are sold because identifying them AFTER guns are sold is like locking the barn door AFTER the horse gets out. |
mdul... | It's convenient for people to say we should focus on more mental health and threat assessment programs rather than gun control since it's easy and doesn't require actually doing anything. It's very much like the "thoughts & prayers" refrain with each mass shooting (more than 2 each day now). However, Republicans have cancelled or targeted for cancellation just about every program that even peripherally touches mental health assessment and treatment. Heck, even the latest targeting of Medicaid further reduces the programs that remain in some small part. As the nation's largest payer for behavioral health services, including mental health and substance use disorder treatment, cuts to Medicaid have a substantial impact on these services. Proposed changes include reducing federal funding to states, which will lead states to cut coverage for certain groups and slash benefits like home care and mental health services. Saying that we should focus more on the mental health side of the coin is a convenient way of saying for someone to say they're fine with the status quo. |
rlpo... | Get the evil Democratic Party under control. You will not change my mind that These incidents stem from the hatred the democrat party promotes through lies. |
jfw2... | Enforce the laws already on the books with harsher sentences and a more viable death sentence. Quit blaming gun ownership. Our country used to be much safer, when more people were armed, not less. The single most common denominator in all massacres is that the victims are unarmed. Liberalism and a moving away from Christian values is the driving force behind widespread violence and the destruction of our country. |
vale... | As well as stricter gun access protocols but mental health issues that prompt these attacks are the first step |
kate... | We obviously need both in this country |
barr... | What a mentally insane country we live in. I can’t believe one hundred percent are not in favor of stricter gun laws. Just look at the school shootings and the amount of people killed with guns every year. Guns are the leading causes deaths among young Americans. |
boba... | Gun laws won't stop criminals from getting guns. a person that would do this is mentally deranged so pick up on that. |
amm4... | Death penalty automatic for any attack on FR |
eliz... | Guns don’t kill people. Mentally unstable people kill people. Stricter gun laws don’t prevent violence-look at Chicago as a case in point. If our country is serious about reducing gun violence, we need to provide stronger, more accessible and affordable mental health programs. |
kati... | Idaho was primed to have attacks like this by ignoring COVID regulations, those who hated authority flocked to the area. This is just the start of what could happen without the correct action in the area taken now. |
bets... | It is obvious that guns need much stricter controls if you, as a society, aren't willing to get rid of any guns that are more powerful than a hunting rifle, without automatic firepower...why can't we do this for ourselves, our kids, our future as a civil society? I really don't understand... |
evbu... | Hold criminals accountable and actually keep them in jail. There are so few consequences today that people aren’t afraid to commit crimes. |
trip... | Second Amendment right should never be taken from the people especially because of reasons like government over breach. Which has been happening a lot lately. They pull you over and give you a citation and you didn't even commit a crime. |
sara... | Without a high powered gun they can't kill this way. Mental health is of course important - but struct background checks and waiting periods for any gun (real ones - like 30-60 days) help address that as well. |
jacq... | States with stricter gun laws usually have lower gun violence and homicide rates. While so much is important to tackle the most important tool we have is legislation restricting guns. |
dian... | Actually, both. |
debo... | With 29 years in mental health and victim advocacy, I believe we need stricter enforcement of existing gun laws and zealous prosecution of offenders. For instance, when officers/detectives file multiple charges, too often prosecutors drop the weapons charges. Aggravated assaults (with a deadly weapon) are too often reduced to misdemeanor assaults. |
mad.... | Stricter gun laws would help the mentally/emotionally unsuitable, to not be able to legally purchase guns. |
jbgo... | The constitutional right to carry arms is very important and should never be abolished. However, there is some steps we could take to keep weapons out of criminals and mentally unstable people. |
rose... | Both stricter gun control and more mental health services. |
cb10... | Both stricter gun control and more mental health and threat assessment programs. |
sabe... | Arson and 1 st degree murder are strictly enforced laws and they did nothing to stop the attacks One caries death penalty and the other is a felony. So what do you think gun control will achieve in changing the behavior of a sick or evil mind nothing it just feel good BS |
nurc... | Both! |
nanc... | We need both to combat this problem. |
chri... | Many outlets will offer that there is no connecting issue with active shooter / active assailant events. There are 3 connecting factors that we can relate to these events: (1) Domestic Violence connection, (2) Mental Health, and (3) Sensationalism mostly exacerbated by the media. A recent study by the justice department indicated that domestic violence can precipitate an event, sometimes contributing to the decision to do harm when under the power and control of an abuser as well as in the immediate time period before the event (killing family members). Regarding mental health, another government study indicated that mental health is a factor 93% of the time. This was misquoted by a prominent morning show last year advising viewers it was 13%. The study indicated that “diagnosed mental health” conditions were a factor 13% of the time, but the fatality reviews and after action studies indicate 93% overall. Lastly, the suspects are adapting and learning from each other. A simple look at the dates of prominent events shows by the closeness of dates and adopted tactics that suspects are adapting (use of hearing protection, barricading devices, body armor, vehicles, and distractions) and looking for fame (live streaming and manifestos). Those of us who have been in active shooter events instruct tactics and techniques for law enforcement, fire, and rescue do not use the names of the suspects. We have adopted the philosophy brought to the forefront by Kristina Anderson, a VT survivor who has teamed up with survivors and victims families for this push. They will continue to adapt and unfortunately adopt tactics such as vehicles (relatively new in the USA, but have been going on forever in Europe, using fire as a weapon, and drones. Our current laws forbid a city, county, and state officer from stopping a drone, even when it is a confirmed threat. Hopefully this will change. Legislation is changing Arizona so far, but only pertains to the border. I hope you find this information helpful. I appreciate the unbiased information you have provided me. Blessings! |
exmx... | Harsher penalties |
jenl... | Americans think they are safer with guns in their houses, how true is that? Mental health care starts in childhood, parents and the village would do better to act accordingly. |
frje... | Gun laws and mental health isn't an either/or choice. It's a both/and. |
savi... | America's overall Health Program is despicable but it's mental health plans are the most deficit. |
pris... | I used to think it was gun control, and I really still want much stronger, gun control, but the more I read about these incidents, the more I know these gunman have had problems that everyone knew about and did nothing about. I really want both gun control and the ability to put someone who is a risk to himself or to others in a safe place immediately. |
lind... | Treating mental health concerns and having adequate threat assessments programs are important, but as long as guns are relatively easy to obtain, these things will keep happening. Stricter gun laws are needed. |
pcun... | Crime is a byproduct of mental health not the weapon |
