  • 61% Mental health issues
  • 32% Access to firearms
  • 7% Other

EmailComments
sbfr...It’s BOTH access and mental healthy
jtba...Lots of countries have policies which permit firearm ownership, but it's like getting a driver's license. You have to take courses and show evidence of mental stability. Here in the United States, any whack job can get all the weapons they want.
bime...Multifactorial. Lack of armed security in gun free zones is one.
delo...Mental health is a problem however er can’t see what goes on in a person head but we can look for clues and report them.
yank...Actually it’s when people with mental health issues have firearms and poor or noxistent treatment and follow up
ljob...Both mental health issues and access to firearms.
emil...The answer is both.
tere...Rage at " others "
diar...Dangerous sick people shouldn’t be allowed any possible chance of being able to access firearms.. make those who do sell guns to these sick people ….. culpable
hond...People are angry and hateful by all the hate spread by TV Fox and social media
wabs...Both
jatf...Combine with ease of access to automatic weapons and you have much of the problem
chri...Both underfunded mental health and ridiculous access to firearms are to blame.
dsde...Mental health issues are a given. It's the easy access to weapons that tips the scale from a mental health crisis to a gun control issue
mall...BOTH
stef...Drugs war. Retorict of Dems Islamic terrorists. Woke professors
jdsp...Social mefia
hmko...Both mental health AND access to firearms
john...you can be as crazy as a betsy bug but without access to firearms, what you going to do? Obviously you could burn down the church but if you weren't holding a gun people could escape more easily (maybe....panic ensuing might still cause deaths but......).
bruc...Politics heating everyone up until the unstable do something unthinkable.
jarc...Most people that are mass shooters have no prior diagnosis of mental illness. Even people who have mental illness who have all of the resources in the world are not able to be institutionalized or optimized on medications and remain in the community while unstable.
troy...Almost all the violence is fueled by anger, a secondary emotion to helplessness, fear, and the feeling that one has lost control of their lives and/or that some group is out to get them. This is amplified by social media and polarizing politicians that feed into the fears by giving them more reasons to be fearful, helpless, or angry. Tree of Life killings in Pittsburgh: not just driven by antisemitism but by the amplified fear of the "replacement theory." Mormon church killing in Michigan: retribution for a Mormon killing Charlie Kirk (e.g. "that group is taking away our voices.")
kind...Again, UK banned military assault rifles after the attack in Andy Murray’s home town. The country cared for their people more than their fear of invasion or companies need to make money from armaments that are for wartime not weekend warriors
tami...The veterans DONT get the help that they need at all! And it’s sad that dying is their only option for TREATMENT
step...It's quite simple - if they didn't have access to fire arms, they couldn't shoot anyone. European countries, Canada and others don't have this problem. The "right to bear arms" no longer applies, at least regarding assault rifles.
sher...Hate speech on social media AND ready access to guns.
cesv...Mental health issues doesn’t kill people but firearms do Other countries may have people with mental issues but they don’t have as many mass shooters because they have strict gun laws
mary...A combination of mental health and easy access to assault rifles and guns
mraj...A combination of many factors...mental health, along with very divisive leadership.
sfer...Mental health is the problem not access to firearms. Firearm access is the method just like explosives, a ramming a car, or a knife are methods to cause harm. it is the malignant intent by a mentally ill societal misfit that causes harm.
mark...While mental health issues are the trigger, we will always have people with mental health problems. It is their easy access to firearms that leads to these attacks. The questions is, which is easier? Control the random mental health problems of individuals, or control their access to weapons?
blik...Note that the attacker used a VEHICLE, AND ARSON .... not just a gun. Gun control is not an answer.
rayh...Evil. Satan overtaking or obsession
msol...If individuals with mental health issues did not have access to firearms, these violent episodes would likely not be as deadly.
tess...A combination of mental health issues and easy access to firearms
akyg...I say both mental health and assault weapon availability. Ban assault weapons.
nanc...I would list 3 factors: mental health issues, easy access to firearms, and social media. All contribute hugely.
spro...Access to firearms? Yea the gun set the church on fire, the gun drove the vehicle through the church and the gun pulled its own trigger
cloz...I think it’s both mental health and access to firearms…they’re equal.
scot...The left extremists ideology, not f you don’t believe their thinking then there is something wrong and evil with you and you should die. Making their killings justified, just like their abortions the left is ant to kill babies, why would we think they wouldn’t be on board and feeling justices in killing people outside the womb. I don’t think it’s mental illness, it’s a brain washing ideology buying the tripe the left sells as normal and right.
matt...Both mental health issues and access to firearms
mich...It is a reflection of the tension and polarization running rampant in this country.
kcru...No morality taught anymore. Prayer and Bible reading were long ago taken out of the schools and it has been a downward slide since then
pjmc...I think mental health issues, the stigma of asking for help, and how difficult that help is to obtain is the biggest reason. But access to guns is also a HUGE contributor to the violence we’re seeing in our communities today. I would say those two answers are nearly 50/50.
dmis...Access to firearms should not have even been an option here. Other is way to broad, What about Media hype, political rhetoric (not party specific). hopefully we will learn what triggered this particular individual
cynt...Both
atli...32% of mass shooters are veterans despite the relative low percentage of the total population comprising veterans. Weapons and the training to use them effectively seems to identify a big part of the problem.
fjry...Need to get rid of the guns like australia
ashl...I don’t think the conversation should be framed as mental health versus gun control. These are two separate but intersecting issues that together contribute to incidents of violence. Reducing the debate to a binary choice oversimplifies the problem and risks turning it into a partisan talking point. Addressing mental health challenges and implementing responsible gun policies should be seen as complementary efforts, not opposing ones.
rock...Losers getting notoriety. Now everyone knows their name.
silv...Our president has both directly and indirectly approved of and promoted violence as a response and solution. As a result others see it as a permissible action and no longer feel constrained by societal norms
liss...Racism pure and simple
kibb...Mental health with the access to guns. It’s a both/and situation. Without the access to guns the mentally ill would have have far less ability to mass murder.
bhmb...Just have to be disturbed and a compromised individual to do something like this!
chri...What other countries have these issues? Mental health issues are everywhere, but guns are not.
wool...I believe each case has multiple factors. Therefore, will have a different primary one: mental health; social media/media influences; home life as a child; gun laws being circumvented or without any teeth to name a few.
paul...Combination of mental health, radicalization from algorithms, and access to firearms
kold...It's both
jeff...I don’t think “mental health issues” is an acceptable answer. Many experiencing mental health issues don’t commit any kind of crimes.
mrse...While mental health issues is the primary cause of these mass shootings, easy access to guns is to blame as well
jbla...Violence against those you dislike is justified and glamorized in the culture.
dvm....And previous training in violent mortal combat with current access to guns amplified Jacob's deadly assault on his fellow citizens.
ktma...Poor assimilation of veterans back into society from a life of military brain washing.
yuha...Mental health issues often precipitated by the irresponsible prescribing of antidepressants. These drugs are dangerous and should only be taken under the careful scrutiny of a psychiatrist.
mdul...It's very difficult to try to assign a single cause to a complex issue. However, one thing is unquestionable. Republicans insist on more guns and less mental health care. Until and unless that changes, we can expect the number of incidents to continue rising.
frog...Bias toward religious institutions and the hate projected from Democrats toward these churches.
jame...Tool malfunction vs user error. Access to firearms by those with mental illness is the issue.
fast...Lack of access to mental health professionals and care
jess...Political radicalization— this was a hate crime.
bmor...Normal people, without mental health issues, don’t commit horrific acts of violence against innocent people. Guns, bombs, knives, acid and other weapons are the vehicles that allow mentally ill people to inflict damage, but they are not the root causes of their actions.
shir...Every country has people with mental health issues but every country does not have mass shootings. The issue is access to firearms.
byro...Mental health issues or in some cases, spiritual health issues. Evil does exist, and it works its way out in the world through evil men. Mental instability also exists, and it works its way out through mentally instable people.
to55...Another Assault Rifle (AR-15) mass killing ! Time to ban these Weapons of War !
rose...There would be less killings.
capt...Actually, in the military veteran's case, the mental health aspect is high (i.e., PTSD), but combined with easy access to firearms, which I think is primary, this makes a perfect storm for such violence.
nurc...Of course it’s both, but if access to firearms were more rigid, maybe the absolute ubiquity of these mass shootings would stop. As has been said, the whole world has people suffering from mental illness. Only the US has mass shootings like this. Are we blind?
stei...Gun control is needed in this country.
lm_w...The way these events are sensationalized and covered gives rise to the next person who wants the glory/spotlight.
susa...Misunderstanding and not trusting others, religious bias, family, friends and/or media- fueled paranoia along with mental illness.
trag...Both mental health and access to firearms play a part in gun violence. People tend to debate if it is one or the other, but really both are contributing factors A person who is relatively healthy mentally is quite unlikely to engage in violent attacks with a gun or other instrument. A shooter is likely to be propelled by extreme uncontrolled anger, retribution, hatred or the “presence of voices” telling them to obtain a gun and use it to maim or kill a person or a group. The persons cognition and ability to reason are severely impaired. The availability and accessibility of firearms makes it easier to carry out a violent act, to give presence to their rage. If guns or other weapons are difficult to obtain, if a licensing process is required, as it is to drive a vehicle, there is the possibility that there is opportunity for an intervention by family, friend, or licensed professional. I liken this to the desire to smoke or drink doesn’t have the money or transportation and is underage, it will take planning and means to buy cigarettes or alcohol and there is the possibility that the desire to do so is diverted. The harder it is, the more obstacles, the chance to lose interest .
mari...A mentally stable person would not be able to commit such horrific crimes
shan...Violent divisive rhetoric on the right
csbr...A culture that has normalized violence, through many facets. But, like Charlie Kirk said back in 2023, “It’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment.”
what...Our society is fragmented and the internet is about isolating and riling people up, our president speaks nothing but hate speech. What could go wrong?
grif...Along with access to fire arms, and all the hate and divisive language among leaders in USA
mart...TRUMP IS A LETHAL VIRUS...BURROWING IN THE ALREADY VIOLENT EXTREME MAGAS
doct...It’s a crazy person with a gun. It always is. The gun is fundamental because there is no shortage of crazy people throughout the world. But America breeds crazy; more and more.
pata...There is a lack of morals brought by what is available on social media. Get the garbage off social media bring back some wholesome entertainment and respect and you will see a difference.
aran...Hard to choose between mental health issues and access to firearms. (This particular man was also an arsonist.) They are different kinds of causes and the problem needs to be approached from more than one point of view. Gun control and the armed services providing real, serious help with PTSD would be good places to start.
merv...Mental health issues & lack of adequate health care often lead to many who reach for guns to make their voices be heard. We can not ignore the need to deal with those issues as well as gun control.
hazz...Mental health issues WITH easy access to firearmsz
cath...Mental health, easy access to firearms, revenge for prior abuse? Male rage? Uncontrolled emotions, anger & rage.
dave...If one with mental health issues did not have easy access to firearms then they would not be able to initiate a mass shooting event. So, guns are much more of the cause than mental health
wbra...It's not one or the other. It is both and. 100%
dewa...Even if mental health or other factors are involved it’s the relatively easy access to firearms in this country that lead to these devastating reaults
edc....MAGA Trump
mdsw...Hollywoods series American Primeval
ksta...Our society is sick!!!
cell...The reason, imho, is the indoctrination of extreme views by media hosted by people/organizations spouting those views, which are unchallenged because of unfettered first amendment rights.
ddbr...Mental health is definitely a huge factor, but we’re not the only civilization or country that has mental health issues, however we are the country that has, by far, the highest rate of mass shootings and gun deaths. It all needs to be addressed, but the less we make guns seem cool or macho, the more we can destigmatize that notion. They go hand in hand, mental health and access to guns, the harder to get guns, it will prove a step in the right direction
pjpa...My bet is 99% of all nongang related mass shooters were prescribed antidepressants
berw...Intolerance of others is reinforced in public media.
shaq...Mental health issues AND ACCESS TO FIREARMS
grah...Mental issues and political rot on social media
brad...Both of above
twin...Military man! Prob has mental issues and access to guns! Too many people have access to firearms! Who needs an assault rifle to defend themselves! Once again innocent lives have been lost!
reil...Mental health is a problem everywhere. Extreme violence against innocent strangers is pretty exclusive to the US.
fnpn...2nd Amendment folks
kato...Need gun control laws! Assault weapons only for military use! Cross referencing people w/mental issues w/ purchasing firearms Dam NRA funding Congressional campaigns & in return Congressional members voting against laws for purchasing firearms!! Soon we’ll have the 325th mass shooting! WAKE UP America… we are NOT a safe Nation!!!
allw...Was he a homosexual? Michigan has a bad reputation, I think, for not allowing people to be themselves. This isn’t Haiti.
jgra...The US has far more mass murders than any other country. I believe that the incidence of mental illness is likely the same. What is different is access to firearms. It’s the guns.
mjke...Our government spreading hatred along with the hatred on social media towards groups of people who have different views is primary. Although, mental health issues in individuals is a huge problem our country needs to address. Of the answers given, I feel the availability to easily purchase firearms is one of the primary factors.
tmne...Firearm access is contributing to the lethality of these attacks.
bren...Mental Health Issues stemming from over proscribing antidepressants and other pharmaceutical drugs
debt...Hate
fall...All other nations have mental health issues, yet they don’t allow access to lethal weapons. To argue that the US mass murder rate, which is on another level above any other country, is due mental health issues is to say the US has much graver mental health issues than other countries—which I don’t think makes any sense.
rhin...Media driven narratives of hate and anti religion beliefs
ccal...the problem is that people with mental health issues have access to firearms.
fait...Majority of people with mental health problems are not violent, but it is the ready access to weapons in this country thats the chief contributor. I dont agree with your either/or framing, its inaccurate and simplistic and produces a simplistic result.
whal...I think both mental health and access to firearms combined are to blame
cger...Attacking unarmed innocents is a mental heath issue. That's why you predominately see this coming from the left, because so many of them are dealing with mental health issues.

How justified is the Pentagon’s deployment of troops to protect ICE facilities in Portland at this time?

  • 67% Not justified
  • 24% Strongly justified
  • 9% Somewhat justified

EmailComments
mrmi...The national guard cannot be deployed without the express permission of the governor of that state. The law should apply to every administration.
kelt...stop these far left antifa terrorist now
joan...Peaceful protest is constitutional under the 1st amendment. Use of military troops within our states is authoritarian and unconstitutional. This is a power move by the office of the president.
jald...Why would the federal gov not be able to protect its property or facilities from the lunatics in antifa? Keep sending the troops otherwise we won’t have a country if we can’t restore some order and protect our own federal agents.
flyb...THIS IS 3RD WRLD SHIT!!!!!!!
beck...The city is a mess. Instead of getting help to keep people safe, they fight the system. Chicago is a perfect example.
nanc...So wrong what this administration is doing. Flexing their muscles to try to make us loyal followers who won’t speak up or challenge anything they do.
tere...Political stunt. To acclimate us to the use of our own troops to stop protests against government. Dangerous precedent, Executive Branch pushing boundaries and destroying norms. Keep tugging away the norms, promoting violence from the right, then hammering protesters - the design is to destroy our norms and substitute white Christian male dominance. Prime minister Miller’s aims.
lola...The law is the law, and those who choose to break it should pay the consequences of such actions. Further more , those citizens who contribute, shelter and also break the law should pay equally. God Bless this Nation and those who work hard and risk their lives to protect it.
cesv...Trump admin doing it because they can not because it is necessary
hine...It is either needed or not and until the locals can control the “mostly” peaceful deminstrations to 100% peaceful demonstrations, which is all that the constitution gives the right for people to have, we should use the resources that we are paying for to help stop the radical minorities.
mich...Portland is perfectly peaceful at the moment and no federal assets are under atttack. The National Guard should only be deployed for emergencies.
atli...Why isn't the War Department considered a terrorist organization?
swjo...Protecting ICE agents must be a priority and the threat of Federal Prosecution will be important for violators who think they can walk away from state or local prosecution
pjpa...AntiFa members are now being arrested for terrorist activities in & around Portland
kibb...Trump is using these deployments to slowly turn us into an authoritarian state
gwen...Trump being a bully as usual
fnpn...What is the Guard for if the DEFSEC can’t utilize them. Good luck to those who answer not justified.
emyo...There is no justification for this. None.
lind...Just another tRump power play!!!!!
cger...BLM & ANTIFA are the militant front line of Democrats much like ISIS is for the Muslims. The goal is documented as stating they want to tear down the establishment and reform it into their likeness. They need to be stopped.
jwar...Has anyone watched the news and videos of what has happened in this city? It is certainly “not” mostly peaceful protests. This was once a beautiful place, and no longer a place I would even consider going to.
jeff...This is just another power grab by the Trump administration!!!
mari...Every law abiding citizen should support efforts to protect law enforcement personnel and help enforce crime prevention. Everything else is just political posturing.
dsde...This is straightforward government overstep. Ice should be held accountable to the due process of law. And, not be given carte blanche to detain whomever they choose.
bria...Because local law enforcement cannot adequately protect the facilities.
trag...This is an example of government overreach. The governor and mayor do not feel that their city or state is a “ war zone”. They do not feel the need for military intervention and are concerned about how this will impact their citizens, postulating that it will be more negative than positive. This is part of Trump’s plan to create police states and exert control over the country. It is not about being helpful or offering assistance ; it is about his agenda and he is instituting it in his typical demanding fashion.
jpwe...If the State cannot protect, its citizens than it should be up to the Federal government.
byro...ICE facilities are Government property, paid for by taxpayers. Protecting them from criminal damage makes perfect sense, protecting people working for the government also makes perfect sense. What makes no sense is thinking it is okay for lawless criminals to attack anybody, or destroy any public property without repercussion.
crai...Portland is out of control
dana...This is disgraceful
ed.j...The use of the term mostly peaceful is a distortion of the facts. If they are not 100% peaceful, they are illegal and must be stopped.
walk...I believe the law is clear on protection of federal property. Could send the Marines…
kjla...Trump is a threat to our democracy

Should the U.S. explicitly oppose Taiwan’s independence to support regional stability?

  • 76% No
  • 12% Yes
  • 11% Unsure

EmailComments
dana...Taiwan should be able to keep there country and be safe
atli...The US should mind its own business of destroying American nations through the Monroe Doctrine and allow the saner countries to resolve their own differences.
stef...Protect Democracy worldwide!!
chri...That will destroy regional stability and lead to the fall of South Korea, Philippines and Japan.
arth...Tiawan, Ukraine, probes in Poland, Estonia etc and the axis of 4. All are intended to push hard against the west. Time to really ratchet up the sanctions and boycotts. These countries mean business. We should respond in kind.
cger...If Taiwan fails, that will embolden China to start making moves on other neighboring countries. Remember Hitlers' Germany.
crai...Taiwan has operated as a successful, independent country since WW2
swjo...Not only no, but hell no, the US should not be in the business of giving away a country's independence. It reminds one of a certain disgraced English Prime Minister who thought it was OK to give away another country to Hitler pre WWII.
mdul...Trump's strategy to "Make China Great Again" may well necessitate him turning away from Taiwan but that would also be a mistake, in lines with almost every step he has taken related to China.
