The 1994 Budapest Memorandum prohibited Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom from threatening or using military force or economic coercion against Ukraine. It was signed as part of the deal for Ukraine to give up its nuclear weapons. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy knows of this history and how Russia used it to seize desirable territory before (Crimea) and now (Donbas and more). The US, under Trump, is seeking to reward that aggression and duplicity. Heck, with a trustworthy POTUS, Ukraine should be skeptical given this history. With Trump and his penchant for backing out of all agreements, they should realize the security guarantees are worthless. |
