Just facts, you think for yourself

Did Senate Democrats who supported the GOP spending bill make the right decision?

  • 54% Yes, avoiding a shutdown is more important than party lines
  • 46% No, they should have fought for more concessions

EmailComments
vivv...It was the only leverage they had and they did not use it
cjlo...Preventing DC from spending $1B of their own tax-payer money, roughly 16.8% of their total budget, will devastate the city of DC. Public Charter schools will be defunded and closed starting in April. Lead removal from the city’s water will be halted. Police and firefighters defunded. DC metro shut down. These - and many other impacted expenditures- are essential city services fully-funded by DC residents in a balanced budget (meaning 2024 taxes collected fully cover these expenses) and are not covered by federal funds nor do they impact the federal budget in any way. That these are even impacted by an accidental exclusion of congress in a Continuing Resolution is antiquated and purely procedural, but the negative impacts to this taxed-but-unrepresented population are unnecessary, cruel, and serve no benefit to anyone. To protect the 700,000 citizens of DC, the federal and congressional employees that work in DC, and the federal buildings and services in this jurisdiction, Congress should have voted No on this Continuing Resolution until an amendment correcting the error could be issued. It’s reprehensible petty politics to do otherwise and both parties are to blame. DC should be a State to prevent this from happening again.
nata...Any power given to Trumputin just empowers him more. Although no matter the outcome he would have spun it unfavorably to the Democrats. I hope the progressives stand up.
serg...Shutting it down is what Elon and,Trump wants
bill...By preventing a shutdown the President would not be able to declare an emergency and then be given the power to declare what jobs were critical and not critical and hence be able to more broadly dismiss many more government workers.
ttim...DEMs don’t care about what is right, only what is in it for them. Shameful!
rsle...THIS is not the right time for a showdown. Give trump/Musk some more rope first before setting the limit of how much destruction they can do AFTER they demonstrate clearly how incompetent and hateful they really are.
cdal...The resistance to this current administration needs to come from the people. Yes, they will need leadership eventually but the disgust and concern is real, even among some MAGA strongholds. Those who voted for Donnie realize they did not do their due diligence about this current president.
kevi...Chuck Schumer and the 10 others who folded has now turned our current state of "needed decorum" as the modern day version of the Weimer Republic. This is now their legacy. Anyone who says "no" is siding with the powers that are akin to what the Weimer Republic allowed to get to fruition. These handful of cowards have the spine of a jellyfish and the teeth of a newborn all out of the fact that their donors are more important than constituents, democracy, and peace.
copp...Democrats need to take more risks in favor of their constituents. They need to start thinking more strategically and less traditional.
theu...If Democrats are going to go along with everything Republicans want, how is our democracy going to be protected? This was an opportunity to take a stand and leverage the shutdown to limit DOGE and the Project 2025 agenda. I am thoroughly disappointed with the Democratic Party as they knew all of this was coming and did absolutely nothing when they held the majority in Congress to put protections in place and to shore up protections for the American people.
bruc...A shut down would have played into Trump’s destroying the government and the country.
lisa...They just lost the only power they had. Schumer needs to go!
zack...If Democrats had shut down the government to “resist Trump” then it may have been the end of the party. Of course I think the party should have split after they screwed over Bernie in 2016. But it’s clear no one has a backbone on the left. Once trump’s economy takes off, again, then why would anyone vote Democrat? Dems need to start distancing themselves from the growing radical part of their dying party.
sere...It's about time BOTH Parties decide to do what's right for the country and forget their partisan attitude. The current administration is trying to keep the President's promises to the citizens. Yes! GOP has made some mistakes and overreacted in some actions but overall it would appear the attempt to cut back on corruption and over-spending has made some progress. Let's see if they can succeed in getting some of this under control.
moji...No, Chuck Schumer really failed to rise to the moment. Donald Trump is really trying to trash the federal government and elected officials seem to forget their duty is to the people not Donald Trump. They should have forced him to deal with the consequences openly. Yes, government could be more efficient, but the way that Elon Musk is going about it is not going to make that happen because it's not the people that make it inefficient it's the lack of modern tools and processes that make government inefficient. It would be far more productive [but slower and harder] to reform processes to make them achieve policy outcomes especially now that we have better metrics and access to examples of other ways of governance that work. Also a big part of why the tools government use are outdated are because they safeguard the information of the people, which we take for granted given how much we give away freely to tech companies. However what should happen is an understanding of what information is acceptable to give to the government to efficiently, or build software that is designed not to be run like commercial software but that meets the needs of securing citizen informational while giving government employees tools to serve citizens better.
sdsa...They have no spines and are crooks just like the conservatives.
fcse...Shutting down the government would also have played into Trump’s/Musks agenda. They would win either way. The Democrat leadership must now hold hearings and called the Executive branch into account.
mich...Trump’s party put forward a plan with no discussion or concessions. With the bedlam in Washington would a shutdown have been noticed?
kcha...We should avoid a shut down but not at the cost of ramming a huge increase in military spending and an even larger budget cut down everyone's throats. Trump and DOGE are already running rampant so the excuse given by Schumer feels ridiculous. We should have pushed harder for a straight continuation without changes so we could discuss the merits of the other spending changes with more time. Trump has now power more too. Schumer made a big mistake and we're not going to forgive him.
rgar...This is obviouse!!!
mich...Trump needs to be stopped, and this was a lever to do so, especially with the havoc he is wreaking globally. This was an opportunity to get his attention.and make some changes to his insane bull in the china shop approach to governance.
atli...The dictatorship is now on the fast track
ebr....It’s past time for the elected representatives to work for the People, not for their donors and lobbyists. If the shoe were on the other foot, those R’s would have shut the govt down ASAP. Dems, take back control and quit squirming like spineless amoebas!
drda... They need to fight harder for democracy and not give to the BS that’s been going on
jllm...Give them enough rope they’ll hang themselves
tubi...no, they shouldnt have given an inch and sat on their hands like republicans did during the entire obama administration.
ltro...We cannot afford to increase national debt.
darl...There were not any great options.
jrv1...Well Senator CS did the right thing. Shutdown doesn’t benefit anyone.
cice...They had no cards and America already thinks they are petulant children and hates them.
paxt...Rather than being anti everything if compromise were to be shown, Washington might start to work again rather than unless you agree with me I’m against you.
cshi...Finally, the Democrats showed some common sense. Glad to see it

Which is more important to you in this situation?

  • 78% Protecting global trade and US interests
  • 22% Avoiding further military entanglements

EmailComments
sdsa...Trump is a massive hypocrite
iris...We should avoid conflict and war over everything else.
jllm...Always follow the money
tubi...not a problem of the US, though the US govt is likely culpable for destabilizing the area govt's.
mich...Protecting global trade? You have got to be joking! Trump protecting global trade? He is busy DESTROYING global trade! This was just an opportunity for him to stir up some shit and show the world he is not afraid to use military domination witj anyone who disagrees with him. A little show of force to warn any nation that doesn't fall in line with his egregious bullying tactics..
henr...Need to stop those Houthis once and for all.
sere...Most countries have agreed on a worldwide nautical limit of 12 miles. Waters other than that are available for all countries to use. Any attacks in this open area should be considered piracy or act of war or terrorism and must be stopped.
serg...Killing always comes back to haunt us
apet...The Islamic cause has been spread across a great n umber of areas. It is time that the USA and the rest of the the world stand up to these religious fanatics and show them there is a consequence for operating out of normally accepted behavior. I tried to make this comment as neutral as possible. Islam has a right to exist but like opther religious a social cause, it is not entitled to push its beliefs on the rest of us by force.
rgar...The Houthis and all the other radical Iran supported terrorists should be eliminated.
miss...Sometimes military force is needed to dissuade bad or murderous behavior.
atli...Once again the responsibility of Congress to declare war is usurped. The US has joined Israel as pariah to the world
sang..."An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind"
jeff...Just wonder what the consequences might be.
koze...If global trade freedoms are continually degraded step by step, it will lead inevitably to military entanglements. Better to handle now when hopefully a more modest show of force could result in desired effect.
fcse...Trump is right to do this. Intensifying what Biden started.
ttim...America first.

Have you personally experienced a phishing attempt or cyberattack?

  • 66% Yes, multiple times
  • 34% No, or not that I’m aware of

EmailComments
walk...Phishing, yes. Attack, no
bruc...Many attempts but none succeeded
attf...weekly
jllm...The real question is who hasn’t
henr...Never click on an unknown email.
agiu...I get at least one phishing attempt per day. And, though I have not personally been subjected to a cyberattack, several institutions that have my data (e.g., hospitals, insurance companies, accounting services) have been subjected to these attacks.
miss...I get on average about 3 emails a day that involves some scheme to get me to click on a link or provide personal information.
fc95...Scammers are constantly trying to get me to click on a link
vapr...Data was hacked once by Chinese through OPM and twice through healthcare providers. Numerous emails in years after that. It settled down . In last month attempts have been on upswing in emails and spam phone calls and most especially via text message about interest in my property
geor...It happens often. We just know not to open anything we don’t know and never click a link on even the companies and people we do know. If they ask for something we close out everything and go directly to their website site.
kold...Bothers me that our law enforcment isn't smart enough to find and prosecute the people doing this.

If your home were destroyed in a natural disaster, who should be responsible for rebuilding costs?

  • 78% Homeowners (insurance)—it's their responsibility to be prepared
  • 22% The government—disasters are unpredictable and require public aid

EmailComments
kevi...I don't understand the framing of this question. It's both. The majority of those who say insurance, yes. But privatized protection passes the buck to premium payers so the profits aren't affected. This means insurance Greedflation. Government assistance helps not just with this inflation, but also fill the gaps insurance companies create to, again, protect their bottom line by denying claims or not paying out full costs to repair and replace. Also, insurance companies don't cover infrastructure. Do you think Allstate cares about roads, for example? And no, the government shouldn't have to pay private insurance to cover disaster relief. Again, why was this question framed this way?
pjls...Depending on the scale of the disaster, the government may also support communities to lesson the burden on insurance and individuals.
moji...I actually think there should be an other. The model for homeowners insurance doesn't assume that we'll have natural disasters at this scale this frequently. The lack of action a few decades ago and still today to not address climate change is why we are dealing with this now. That being said, I do think that it's important to have some personal responsibility for the actions an individual takes to choose to live in a low-lying flood zone or a transiton area for wildfire zone. However since those zones have shifted drastically from when they were originally established due to climate change that's not entirely fair to say homeowner you didn't make a good choice. I think this requires really addressing root causes of climate change and then resetting the model for home owner insurance and federal aid to make sure that neither one will bankrupt the other.
lila...Homeowners should have insurance. Gov’t aide is for low income folks and infrastructure of location affected.
zack...It’s extremely concerning that 20% think the governments job is to provide for them.
dajo...Its crazy that people think the government should pay for natural disaster. This is why responsible people pay for insurance.
arth...This is a problem that continues to worsen. High risk areas are finding insurance unavailable, at any cost, and at best, extremely expensive. This results in the government being the only Hope.
bcwa...However government should work to reduce home owner premiums and should ensure there are affordable options to obtain insurance
mich...Because this government is cutting the NOAA and many government services related to climate and weather. If they are going to do that and if they're going to encourage fossil fuel use with slogans like, " drill baby drill!" then they should pay for the lack of warning about destructive weather caused by global warming, something they are contributing to now.
wrwa...The government can’t be and shouldn’t be involved in everything in our lives. We should have insurance and the company should provide the coverage they “imply” when the policy is written.
gmac...Public aid provided by FEMA is to rebuild or repair community services, provide emergency shelter, food snd potable water. It is not their responsibility to pay homeowners to rebuild or repair their homes, that’s the responsibility of the homeowners insurance, except in cases of flooding, as FEMA is the only way to obtain flood insurance.
dana...What happens when the insurance company decides to cancel your insurance before the impact of a disaster? Or you don’t buy flood insurance because you are not in a flood zone. North Carolinians in the mountains never needed flood insurance before Helene.
darl...I think that both insurance and government assistance are necessary.
jllm...If there not responsible there just stealing your money
lizk...I believe both. The government can provide a basic level of safety and health, but individuals need to decide what risk they’re going to take beyond that. If you build your house on a hill overlooking the ocean, and it gets destroyed, I shouldn’t have any more responsibility to you than I do to a homeless person. I want you to have food and shelter and safety. But I don’t have to rebuild your house on the ocean.
fc95...It should be a combination. Government needs to make sure insurance companies actually pay in a timely manner
toni...While I believe people should have adequate home insurance Natural disasters also require government assistance to rebuild infrastructure.
ttim...Your home ,y our responsibility to insure it.
geor...Almost the first thing that fails in a disaster is the power system, the water pumps, etc. - like what appears to have happened in LA. The results of these failures are then often the cause of damage to homes and businesses. So the public is responsible to fix the system and get it running again. The problem is in many places no private insurance is available for homes and businesses. Just look at Florida! And look at California where just before the LA Fire that demolished whole communities an insurance company cancelled thousands of insurance policies. Many were not able to find or afford coverage before the fire destroyed their homes and businesses. So much for having private insurance! States need to create their own insurance policies and stop the craziness of private companies refusing to cover properties. Until climate change, destructive weather events just didn’t happen as frequently as now. So now we have to make changes to our systems and provide coverage at a cost most people could afford. The insurance companies must charge huge rates not only to cover losses but to make a profit so they can pay stockholders. States can cover everyone in the state and charge more reasonable rates. In this case the private sector is no longer the best solution!
miss...Unless you simply ignore your present locale or where you plan to move, you should know that tornadoes are common in the Midwest, hurricanes are common in Florida and the Gulf, mudslides and fires are common in California, and so forth. If you don’t want the risk of those things damaging your property and don’t want to buy insurance, don’t live there. Problem solved.

Would you consider using a haptic device to enhance everyday tasks, such as feeling textures while shopping online?

  • 67% No, it’s unnecessary for everyday use
  • 33% Yes, it would make digital experiences more engaging

jllm...I’m sure it’s like riding a Disney attraction
moji...If its for visually impaired or someone who is paraplegic, please continue developing it, but i don't need this as a fully able-bodied person. This won't help me feel something that is artisan crafted in Thailand because their not putting their wares on the internet. Also they should not because likely the cost of them doing so would not be worth me buying it at that point. It's value lies in being part of my trip to Thailand.
rgto...Something else to make things more complicated, and more prone to failure.

moji...I am aware this is bad and actively trying to address it. Goal is by the end of this year to avg 6-8 hrs weekly.
jllm...Retired
ttim...Why not more than 8 hrs. Helpful.
lvca...Mostly 7-8, a couple of times a month more like 5-6.
chri...Getting up 2 times in 6 hour to urinate
tomm...4 hours
fcse...If I make it to 6 hours, I’m good to get up. Being retired I can take a nap, and so every day.
jamf...I have brain injury and am now disabled by Neuro Covid. People with TBI require more sleep to feel refreshed in the morning! I used to teach 20 children all day on 6/7 hours. No more...
geor...How many hours of deep sleep do we need to properly clean our brains?
aseb...Sleep often interrupted
