Is it fair to match foreign tariff rates on US goods, or does that escalate unnecessary trade conflict?/span>

  • 46% Fair response
  • 3% Other

fran...Trade should be a balanced strategy will all our trading partners, ultimately countries try to protect their own manufacturing and there's no reason why the United States shouldn't do the same.
serg...Tarrifs need to be reciprocal
marc...Really? 69% voted escalated conflict? I don't have a problem with recipricating
nanc...He’s not matching foreign tariffs and his calculations are way off, which will escalate conflicts considerably.
ccor...Bring manufacturing to the USA especially pharmaceutical. Energy independence for national security.
ebat...What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
jllm...Trying to understand tariffs big picture, I know American companies will pay more in taxes to do business there by making less money, less dividends ,less price share and reduce my net worth. If other countries reduce theirs we might be able to sell more goods there, make more money raise dividends and price share. What I don’t understand is if a foreign company reduces their tariffs on American goods already made there all we’ve succeeded in doing is making their economy stronger by better pricing. They will expand we will retract, I’ll have to go back to work, why didn’t someone tell me to pass that course.
pick...It is both fair & escalates a possible trade war. If other countries drop or reduce theres we will do the same. Unchartered waters but it makes sense tit for tat. Buckle up..
obri...Trump is stupid
lanc...I’m sick of everything coming from china.
debr...It probably does increase trade conflicts but I'm still in favor of reciprocal trade agreements.
atli...US should offer to lower tariffs to 0% on all products with all countries in return for reciprocal action. It's called free market.
yami...USA don't need more factories in the United States, there is no workforce people that want to do the job, only for a ' HIGH PAY CHECK " Latinos are getting kicked out of the country, who is going to fill those " half a million " positions? and no only that, in the reality the American consumers are paying those tariffs, the factories outside the US are actually owned by the American brands like APPLE, MICROSOFT, NIKE, and hundred others. The tariffs are just going to get more inflation for the American people !!
blik...Your reporting sources are demonstrating leftist bias against the President Trump Team strategy. The entire issue is much too complex for the average American adult, and you are exploiting that ignorance. Offer both sides, or identify yourselves!
hoom...Too complicated
shaf...The question is far too simplistic and doesn’t seem to account for trade-weighted tariffs into account. Countries all try to protect certain sectors of importance to them.
rsle...Total lackk of understanding of international trade.
lora...This will improve Americas economy and should add jobs as businesses move back to the US.
eric...If Country A imposes increases for imports on country B. Its reasonable for Country B to impose similar increases for imports on Country A. It is a fair response, and the US is will suffer if other countries agree to imposes increases.
nath...Matched - if they want zero set theirs to zero
knik...Tariffs applied universally without any strategic understanding of the consequences in the US and abroad are not a solution-they will result in drastic outcomes.
mbul...They are NOT RECIPROCAL tariffs.
adfe...Fair but it should be progressive.
grif...Why she our good have tariffs and their goods not have tariffs. Where is the equality in trade. If these country’s do not like tariffs then drop theirs. America also pays the brunt. This needs to stop.
neah...We should impose if they impose on us
rays...Convicted Felon, Sexual Felon, Criminal, Ass
mjzi...It is ignorant to oversimplify this topic.
jrom...If this strategy is well thought-out it can bring great benefit, and it makes sense. I think we have some leverage here, but I hope we are not overplaying our hand. I trust this administration to have thought through all possible ramifications, and the expected response. This is negotiation at its most dangerous, but that is how we gain most benefit. We are finally playing chess instead of checkers. It will work or it won't...
pach...Tit for tat doesn’t take into account other factors like the original reason behind the tariff rates. We need to follow the history behind the tariffs and not just try to even the score.
1dan...Fair to match but should not exceed.
bria...Tariffs can be effective when they are carefully targeted. The issue is that these tariffs are not carefully targeted. The USMCA which Trump hailed as a great deal for the US, made by the self proclaimed greatest deal maker, is suddenly now horrible, requiring huge tariffs on Canada and Mexico? If it was such a horrible deal, why did the great deal maker sign it in his first term? This is all distraction with Trump trying to find a way to give billionaires tax cuts!
bdh2...An Imbecilic solution looking for a problem
rgar...It is already a trade war if other countries levy tarriffs and taxes on our products or wont take our products. This is long overdue.
toni...I am not sure what is correct but it does seem that the US was at a distinct disadvantage and encouraged Americans to buy good made outside the USA.
hect...It’s about time we have equal footing on these tariffs as other countries tariffs our country. Yes it’s a big hit to the economy now but it will level off and be better for the economy in our country. We just need to get through the early stages of this change
bren...this will just cause a trade war and huge inflation
dste...Ridiculous and hair-brained!
andr...This is a deeply misleading question, as Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs are not "match(ing) foreign tariff rates" at all. Regions like Japan and the EU have effective tariff rates on the US in the low single digits.
aran..."Mirroring" tariffs is yet another example of Trump's arrested development. He's going to do to others what (he feels) they've done to him. His world is full of purposeful and personal aggression, to which he must respond with purposeful and personal aggression--not much else is meaningful.
knol...Tariffs are useless and destroys relationships that are needed.
marc...Simply. Why not. If not this than what else can be done to level the trade imbalance.
wait...Each commodity item is unique so a flat rate does not make sense
jhck...Trade wars never work as intended. Trump wants to encourage US manufacturing while making getting other countries to lower their tariffs on US goods. Why should any trading nation not do the same for their producers? Makes no sense…
gray...I said other because both are fair and don't blame others to match foreign tariffs and its going to start a conflict of course and we the people are the ones going to pay for it.
lken...Other countries have been charging crazy tariffs on American goods. It’s time we match them. Either they will reduce… or it will end up as a wash.
andr...I think time will tell on this one. Hard to say right now.
jeff...A recession is on the horizon!
land...Reciprocal trade is fine but it should be done over time using restraint to minimize inglation
leen...Allies are being treated as enemies!!
bott...fair is tit for tat. our response is more than fair. Most US citizens are cowards and dont understand basic economics.
gali...It does escalate conflict, but in a way that needs to be done. Im not an economist so I don’t know if this is the best way to get foreign countries to lower their tariffs against us, but it seems a logical one. If this escalates conflict with other countries then we should be asking ourselves why we’ve be okay with the tariffs placed on us by foreign countries for so long. Also if a tariff is a tax on the American people and not the foreign countries as you often hear, then why would this bother those other countries?
geof...it’s probably both fair and likely to escalate trade conflict. They’re not mutually exclusive. It’s also likely to make inflation worse in the short term
t.sq...Trump lied about the amount of tariffs other countries impose on our goods.
fcse...Stupid. We should have no tariffs. There would be a greater demand for US goods and some countries might lower or even end tariffs on their goods to attract U.S. customers.
rmac...I don’t understand why America has to help out the entire world!
simo...The Orange Men from The White House is a Dictator. A wet dream comes true
kimk...I would say Fair Response, but I am not convinced the supposed "tariffs" that Trump showed are correct. For example, I am pretty sure the EU number includes VAT, which is charged to everyone for everything, not just for imports to the EU.
myna...Were the announced tariffs actually matching the tariff rates other countries apply to the US? It doesn't seem so. This question in some ways seems not particularly relevant to gauge sentiment for yesterday's announcement.
codf...Why are Americans taxed differently than other countries. Level the playing field, and definitely bring the companies back to employ Americans.
tubi...companies have been taking advantage of bad trade deals at the expense of the american workforce.
jack..."reciprocal tariff"?? "Matching" tariffs? Be serious with the question. There is nothing matching or reciprocal about these tariffs with the possible exception of China and Trump has presented no data for that. Don't ask BS questions and expect to get valid answers.
scho...blankett tariffs make no sense when thet are applied to goods the country does not or cannot produce
jjpl...Tariffs are a irrational and illogical and nonproductive tool. They will only lead to hardship for the consumer in all countries, and recession if not a depression globally.
doug...The admin should be concentrating on the deficit first not the trade imbalance particularly not in the haphazard way it's been done
robo...First thing, I don’t believe Trump’s numbers are correct. He lies too much to just believe this on face value, especially Trump’s face, which I don’t value. I heard from a German businessman that his 34% was actually close to 5%. I’ll believe his numbers when an actual economist gives them.
jmbe...This is insanity! Good luck buying "American" bananas, cars, coffee, tea, fashion, avocados, rubber, lumber, watches, diamonds, etc., etc. And do you BELIEVE those numbers on Trump's chart (regarding % of tariffs charged by other nations), just because he quoted them? Even if they were accurate since when do two wrongs make a right? Still think Trump is going to eliminate "Biden's" inflation?
msyk...Just because other countries penalize their citizens with tariffs doesn't mean it makes sense to penalize ours with reciprocal tariffs. And it clearly invites retaliatory actions which harm the US economy and its citizens even more.
krta...Tell me more about what Trump is trying to accomplish with these tariffs. It seems Trump voters were hoping he would make good more affordable for Americans and this seems counter to that.
cica...This is the stupidest response to any kind of trade in balance ever. It’s not based on any logic it’s not based on any sound economic principles or theories. It’s crazy.

Do you believe the 2017 tax cuts had a net positive or negative impact on the US economy?

  • 60% Net negative
  • 40% Net positive

EmailComments
pssa...We need to pay for more things as we go and reduce the deficit. The rich don’t need the tax cut.
abel...The tax cuts are not paid for thus causing more debt.
atli...Tax billionaires out of existence while eliminating taxes on middle class and poor. Billionaires don't create jobs, consumer demand does.
jllm...It took years to straighten out, and here we go again.
jack...My small business was thriving
jmbe...More madness and hypocrisy!
akyg...Do I understand this correctly? Raise the debt limit. Decrease taxes on the wealthy. And cut programs. Really?
jrom...There is no denying that the economy and financial condition of the country was humming until they were squelched by the COVID pandemic. A little bit of research would reveal and confirm that failure to extend those cuts will be detrimental to the middle class, both directly and indirectly as their taxes go up and investment goes down.
tdho...I wonder about your audience with the low net positive results
mdul...The impact of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) on the U.S. economy isn't a simple positive/negative since you need to also consider the timeline. For instance, the TCJA initially boosted GDP growth, particularly in 2018 (GDP grew by 2.9% in 2018, compared to 2.4% in 2017). Also, corporate tax cuts led to higher profits and stock buybacks, boosting the stock market and benefiting investors. But, the TCJA significantly increased the federal deficit. It was estimated to cost about $1.5 trillion over 10 years. While proponents argued that growth would offset the revenue loss, tax revenues did not meaningfully increase so it added considerably to the debt with a special note that Trump himself led the largest deficit and debt increases in history. The 1-year GDP growth did not sustain, despite Trump's assurances that we'd have so much growth we wouldn't believe it. Also, those tax savings for stock buybacks that many companies used to elevate stock prices meant they used the money for that purpose rather than increasing wages or investments in infrastructure or productivity. The biggest benefits went to corporations and wealthier individuals, while middle- and lower-income groups saw relatively modest tax cuts. Recall that the corporate tax cut from 35% to 21% was permanent, while individual tax cuts are set to expire this year. So, there was some short term benefit but no longer term benefits and considerable harm resulting from the increase in deficit and debt. Any benefits were more favorable to higher earners with more than 70% of earners seeing no benefit or negative outcomes. It provided a temporary economic boost but added to the national debt and did not lead to sustained, higher long-term growth.
rsle...Ballooned the deficit significantly
tubi...i didnt get a tax cut. it went to top earners while th emiddle to the hit. they cut tax revenue but didnt cut the spending. the US has a spending problem.
sabr...Rich got richer.
lndn...Those tax cuts served primarily to enrich the rich business owners and further divide the haves vs have-nots
gart...Tax Cut benefits were not distributed justly. The have-mores get to have-even-more.
gack...corrections are needed!
serg...All it did was increase the debt
cica...The single biggest support of the American economy, Social Security payments. They allow seniors to participate in the economy and a positive way and close out their lives with dignity. During bad economic times they have the money to continue spending. In this economy, when the consumer stop spending economies in trouble.
russ...Increases debt Wealthy benefit not middle or lower class Wealthy should pay their fair share
jgas...Congress is full of idiots
shaf...The cuts didn’t pay for themselves and contributed to the national debt/deficit
blik...Again, bias on display. This “survey”, its sample population, suspected to be as skewed left as your “reportage”.
mich...Who will buy our debt after we initiate a trade war. We need to raise taxes since the Trump tax cuts cost us that $5T.
soto...It doesn’t make sense on produce given we import produce based on seasons. Also its not like trump is helping US farmers
ccko...Short term positive while growing the debt. GOP is saying let the kids worry about debt in the future
jton...Large corporations and the wealthy are not paying their fair share of taxes as it is. They need to be taxed more not less.
emco...TAXCUTSIN A NET NEGATIVEUSBUDGET AREANEGATIVETOTHE FUTURE!
dean...If you are sentient you have to remember the great boom in the economy. Remember when most companies issued checks of around $1000 to every employee to share their lower costs. How lower income people were exempt from all income taxes for the first time in history.
srcl...These corporations that benefit only pocket their profits...they don't help the average person. Look at how much these CEO's get in bonuses. How much money do they need!!!
rgar...The economy during Trumps first term was growing and was strong. Covid was the damper.
jfbn...Any tax cuts should be commensurate with equal or larger spending cuts. The deficit is obscene, imo.
c.ma...It helped rich people and did little or nothing for everyone else and increased our national debt which the Republicans don't mind doing if it is because of tax cuts but vehemently decry if it is a result of spending to improve infrastructure, education, or the health of the people of the United States.
lora...Tax cuts will put more money into the economy and should stop government wasting our money and allowing Washington DC politicians stealing from the American people.
robi...More debt. More breaks for the rich.
mary...It is for the rich.
john...The 2018 and 2019 economy and markets were two of the best years in decades.
msyk...Net positive from an individual rights perspective. Net negative from an economic and fiscal policy perspective because Congress refuses to cut spending to balance the budget with lower revenues, and the federal deficit (another $5 Trillion?!!) is a huge drag on the economy that is just going to get worse.
tomg...Tax cuts and higher deficit, yea that makes sense
bail...Most of the cuts went to the wealthy.

Do you think Elon Musk's leadership is now a liability or an asset to Tesla’s global brand?

  • 83% More of a liability
  • 15% Still an asset
  • 2% Other

EmailComments
nanc...Crash and burn tactics are not a responsible way to cut government spending.
jest...His white superiority and lack of care for any people is huge.
mari...Elon is a brilliant, entitled, buffoon. He might have continued with what he knows best, technology instead of following his orange Christ.
jrom...Unfortunately emotions are overriding common sense...
jmbe...Elon Musk should be deported!
kfhe...The ignorance of the true ownership of Tesla currently needs strong education if those opposing electric vehicle Tesla. The creator has nothing to do with all of the stockholders and enployees
leen...Plain and simple chaos!
rhen...His arrogance and lack of compassion for others is now on fun dispaly
jamf...Mainstream media created the whole Narrative( liability) which has little to do with what ( the good!) Musk has been doing for Americans. They try to ruin everything and remain divisive. They should be taken off the air.
thru...He’s really showed his character - ruthless…
mbul...Has anyone suggested any reason, apart from Musk, why Tesla’s sales have tanked? No, I didn’t think so.
cica...This loser can’t lead a two car funeral. Everybody hates him and he doesn’t care. He’s evidently produced 14 children, but hasn’t bothered to actually father a single one of them. There’s something wrong with him. He has no real character.
gala...He has proven himself to be crazy
srcl...I have nothing good to say about Elon Musk...he is destroying people's lives and couldn't care less. More power to the people that can destroy him.
desa...Musk is making himself into a very bad joke with dire consequences for untold millions of people around the world. My friend’s Tesla is paid for and she loves the car, but made her own bumper sticker that says “Fire Elon!” That says it pretty clearly.
kerr...I was looking to buy an EV and would never buy one remotely related to that foreign unatic
mdul...Musk has undertaken his DOGE responsibilities to gain control over the funding of agencies that are regulating his other industries, those served by Starling and SpaceX. Tesla is a casualty of his drive to remove regulatory barriers from those preferred industries.
atli...Trump needs to say, you're fired.
rgar...Musk is brilliant. He will bring Tesla back. I would not be surprised to see him enovate the internal combustion engine of the future.
conr...He has had much too much influence on governmental affairs, especially since he was not elected. He also has great conflict of interest related to his DOGE activities.
dcke...His behavior is making others abroad angry
melz...Market niche limitations and love affair with EVs is waning
gnku...In the long run an asset.
loga...My Tesla is the best car I’ve ever owned… but I feel dirty driving it in this climate. Elon needs to leave the company or the brand will falter.
serg...Currently a liability bc he is not involved in Tesla anyways
brad...It's for sure a liability, but he's the founder and majority stakeholder. I think he's a public ding-dong that definitely acts before thinking, but he's getting a pretty raw deal. He's created one of the most successful US based car companies that has pioneered EV vehicles and batteries, launched a satellite constellation that provides connectivity to those in rural areas (and disaster zones) who otherwise can't get reliable internet. He created an aerospace company that has rockets that actually land safely on earth after space travel and brought home 2 astronauts that were stuck in space for 8+ months. He's also developed a team of engineers that are mining data to find excessive waste in our govt. Being a brash ding-dong shouldn't result in a coordinated attempt to destroy a person or company.
glas...EV production by other countries and companies has been growing and improved so of course I'd expect Tesla sales will drop due to quality competition. I love my Tesla and I'm sticking with Tesla for now. Its American too.
lndn...He's a liability to Tesla, to SpaceX and to the US government
dajo...Commies driving sales down
paul...His DOGE campaign has been a horrific blunder for Tesla. Just because he's successful at making an awesome electric car and rockets, doesn't mean he's smart at anything else.
jllm...Liability is his middle name.
land...He's brilliant but needs to get out of politics and stick to business
lora...Tesla will bounce back once people realize that DOGE is a good thing and not a bad thing.
jeff...He needs to go away!!

Do you believe Oracle’s claim that the compromised system was inactive for 8 years reduces the seriousness of the breach?

  • 81% No, it’s still serious
  • 19% Yes, it reduces concern

EmailComments
kimk...Even more serious. Why is it online, if it is inactive?
sudb...They should also clean systems of info if they are not using them.
jllm...Of course it’s serious, a software company not keeping up with the technology of modern day. Where’s Deloitte Consulting when you need them.
bria...If it hasn't been in use for 8 years, why was it still running? It was being used for some reason. Systems that are unused cost money to maintain and keep running. This is just typical cybersecurity play book of downplaying breaches so they have to pay out as little as possible. I think the US government needs to pass legislation that protects our data and makes these breaches more costly for companies!
