Just facts, you think for yourself

Is requiring tariffs to expire after 60 days without congressional approval a safeguard — or a limitation on decisive leadership?

  • 77% Safeguard
  • 23% Limitation

wilj...Rogue President could cause a lot of problems. Need a check and balance to major situations like this
jllm...Safeguard for them, able to hide how they vote on unfavorable legislation.
tbah...The Trump tariffs are ill-conceived, poorly presented and chaotic. The POTUS reminds the nation daily that he is profoundly unfit for office
flem...We need to be protected from this lunatic.
mdul...Trump has succeeded in removing or bypassing almost every check and balance the Founders put in place and that were reaffirmed throughout our history. With a subservient Republican majority in Congress unwilling to do their constitutional duty and the judiciary (SCOTUS) acquiescing to almost all of his demands for more power (as well as granting him a get-out-of-jail card with almost limitless immunity), his goal of grasping total authoritarian power is almost complete. Attempts to reassert any checks and balances on his insatiable appetite are needed and welcome.
boyl...There should be a system of checks and balances on trade. One person’s ideas can not monopolize the whole world
lawe...Our government is set up with checks and balances. The president is not a king. We need Congress to check 34s unhinged, wackadoodle whims.
kold...The only way tariffs work is for a short period of time.
john...Trump administration cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
cand...I don't really know how I feel about the tariffs that Trump is trying to impose but I do believe that the reason our government works is that we have the checks and balances of to senate and the house to help regulate any presidential situation
cica...It should be 30-days. Congress has abdicated too much of it’s power to the executive branch.
nath...I would say it does not go nearly far enough given the immediate economic impact that can happen immediately after an announcement
tomd...A necessary and appropriate check and balance.
shoe...congress needs to assert its position as the third and most important branch of our government’. They should represent the will of the people
rpsi...Decision by committee is seldom effective and Congress is the ultimate committee.
kev....Far too long, have international trade agreement been unfair to the U.S. It’s time to right that wrong!
blik...The purposes of tariffs includes the leverage for bargaining to win concessions on much more than just equality in trade contracts. If Congress can negate the power of a tariff in 60 days, why would an uncooperative country accede or comply with the POTUS demands, and simply ride out the 60 days?????? Congress has proven itself impotent and feckless in protecting our trade status for 50 years!!!! I lived through it.
phil...Not only is it a limitation, I personally believe a lot of these politicians are benefiting financial with other countries charging us more.
pcbr...Oversight and control over tariff policy should be a function of congress and not the whim of the president
bres...Congress is pretty much unable to perform most any function due to party bias. Totally unworkable. Holds the executive branch hostage.
rayd...It's all a waste of time though. It'll probably pass in the Senate but probably fail in the House. And even if it passes both Houses, it'll be vetoed by Trump, and the Senate will not be able to override the veto.
larr...Those with limited understanding of economics and needed temporary changes to rescue our government from fraud and abuse would say this is a safeguard. Let them review their fearful position in 6 months.
pber...What if the unthinkable happened somehow an asset of a foreign adversary ascended to the highest office in the US. Exercising the balance of power between the three branches of government would never be more important than in that unimaginably event.
mary...Please act on this dangerous situation and save the country.
rita...This is trying to thwart what the president is trying to do to establish fair trading and protect America from always flipping the bill for other countries
tomg...It should be less than 60 days. Damage is already done within that period
roth...It’s a good start
rgar...Congress has had years to address the trade imbalance and the globalists attack on our middle class and they failed. Truth is they did not want to address the issue as the rich get richer with globalization. Now we have a President with the desire and fortitude to address the damage and everybody is going crazy. The current huge trade (dollar) imbalance cannot continue without more severe (probably devastaing concequences to our country.
mich...Trump doesn’t know what he is doing. He promised lower prices. Trade wars do the opposite.
flor...When decisions are creating chaos and the decision maker cannot communicate grounded reasoning to support the decisions, restrictions are needed.
toni...I believe this safeguard would require a strategic strategy for the tariffs rather than the haphazard approach of these current tariffs. The current tariffs are too broad to allow for a coherent path for investors to support specific manufacturing goals. They seem more retaliatory and radioactive than an economic plan.
tada...Current situation is untenable.
robo...We need protection from anypresidents that
grif...We need checks and balances. This a democracy not a monarchy
sand...It takes congress too long to enact anything. Their main goal is to thwart Trump. Nothing will be accomplished.
hdsc...The US have been governed by edicts since Trump was inaugurated. There has been no separation of powers. He is a fascist.
nanc...Trump is wielding too much power already. We need some clear heads to counter his craziness.
bhad...Trump is insane! We need some kind of safeguard from his lunacy. LOCK HIM UP
arth...Trump is operating with too much erratic autocracy slapping on tariffs to intimidate without enough fore thought. Time for Congress, and the courts, to settle him down some.
jame...No surprise after bankrupting 6 businesses, Trump is full of more and more bad ideas and driven by a fragile ego and broken brain
aubr...Glad to see another bipartisan bill brought forward to attempt to correct the chaotic policies of this administration. Between this and the 12 week proxy vote for new parents we are getting somewhere. The enemy of my enemy is my friend?
kenh...One man should not be able to crash the. World economy.
jeff...This is a democracy not an autocracy. Trump should be fired
dbmj...I'm fine with tarrifs. Just ask Trump and Musk to deposit eight thousand into my brokerage account. Then they can isolate the USA from the entire world, and we'll lose all our strength in eighty years of building alliances with all the democratic nations that once trusted and believed in us.
telp...I am not In favor of these tariffs. They may cause my small business to close
luci...Anything that will rein in Trump is worthwhile.
dmus...Congress needs to sit this one out. The members of congress vote along party lines and not for Americans. They need to sit down and shut up
mary...The President should not have sole power to pass tariffs at all without Congressional approval.
tahe...Trump has FAR overstepped his authority and needs to face reality that he doesn't control everything!
kath...Checks and Balances
nata...Separation of powers is a pillar of America and needs to remain so. Congress needs to act to stop our economic destruction.
djbk...We are in desperate need for checks and balances right now. Executive orders have run rampant and are threatening democracy.
cmur...Trump is foolish and for all those that think this is decisive leadership, I would remind them that this is a man who has filed bankruptcy in many of his companies. He knows nothing about business.
gray...To prevent convicted felon who has bankrupted his own businesses at least 4 times, to bankrupt the strongest economy in the world.
jbgu...we don't need a dictatorship in a democracy
dana...Thank you!!!
klra...Apparently there are many liberals who get your newsletter. With a 60 day limit, the countries we target will just wait the 60 days and you have effected no change at all.
geor...If Congress must be notified to review any upcoming tarriffs, then every administration, including Trump's, must be able to prepare and present their reasoning. We now know that the numbers the President Presented on April 2nd were based on made up math! Since these numbers do not represent the real differences in imports and exports, none of this would have been introduced as Congress would have seen the problems and stopped it - or let it lapse in 60 days. The sadness over the past two days when the stock market has been slammed is how many working people and families planning for retirement, buying a house, saving for college, etc. have lost a huge portion of their life savings because our President has no boundaries. The Constitution set up boundaries for all three parts of our Government - the President, Congress and Judical. But for some reason Congress has not played their part and the President is ignoring most of what the Judicial have tried to do to protect our Constitution.
lw63...It should be mandatory that every tariff the is proposed needs to go before Congress. Can you say " recession"
jona...While I do not agree with the tariffs a president needs to be able to act decisively
usct...The Congress should claw back its legislative responsibilities and pass this bill. At this time there is too much economic power vested in the Executive. Congress needs to rebalance the checks and balances the Founders and the Constitution envisioned . Most folks cannot afford too many more liberation days.
priv...keep congress out of it, otherwise they will be paid off.
jdhu...Don’t like that tariffs would expire due to inaction. There would be no incentive to review the possible merits
ham3...The general public does not understand what I means to turn around a company. Good knowledge = good leadership and management. Most people couldn't manage themselves out of a paper box which is completely apparent based on their abilities to financially manage them selves. Our joe q public problem is not knowledgeable to even comment on these questionnaires. Public opinion is vastly outweighed by the 2% of the US that has had experience in these matters.
keit...Where does one start? I live in a rural area and I feel terrible for Wisconsin’s (and every other state’s) farmers. My second thought is how can alienating all of our global allies to this extent be a good thing?

Should a six-hour declaration of martial law be enough to justify a president’s removal from office?

  • 72% Yes
  • 28% No

mdul...The former Brazilian leader, Jair Bolsonaro, is being put on trial for his alleged coup attempt. The South Korean President who sought to also consolidate power through martial law is being held to account. It is only in the USA where a leader seeking to hold on to power through a coup is not held to account.
anth...He almost blocked congress from getting back to their office by taking control of the military. How could you not impeach him?
beth...Impeach Trump for destroying democracy in the US. Does our Congress have the courage?
nath...ANY declaration obviously outside the purview of emergency executive power is justification for the impeachment process. This process should be the decider if these actions constitute removal or censure
drmi...It is not only the declaration of martial law but the order to keep lawmakers out of parliament so due prices could not occur.
rita...It is hard to answer without more details on this action
lw63...I hope Trump does it!
fait...Trump should be removed. He has abused his office.
cica...If it’s NOT an actual emergency then it’s an abuse of power
tubi...even less so for what we're dealing with in the USA.
perm...If the act is done to protect the majority of citizens from rising violent chaos perpetrated by a minority, a short term halt is justifiable.
arth...If it’s what South Korea’s law is, that’s their business, not ours. My opinion, and America’s is irrelevant.
indy...S. Korea's president may have deserved to be removed from office, (our own president may deserve to be removed from office) but there may be legitimate needs to suspend normal civil laws to resolve a violent disruption in society. Martial law is an extreme response to quell an uprising. Establishing it as an arbitrary reason to remove a president from office is short sighted.
lawe...On its own, declaring martial law should not justify removal from office. In this instance it seems that the president’s intent was criminal. So, in this particular instance removal from office is justified.

Does stronger-than-expected job growth mean the U.S. economy is still fundamentally healthy — or just temporarily resilient?

bret...Seasonal hired for summer are normal
srcl...If things keep going as they are we are going to crash.
arth...March and April statistics will reveal much more information. Much to soon for a sky is falling diagnosis.
mbul...Let’s just ignore what’s happening in the public sector, so we can all feel good about the economy.
gray...Wait for the reciprocal tariffs to kick it, there will be consequences
jllm...This administration’s love affair with Tariffs is a death from a thousand cuts.
perm...Newt Gingrich stated, during his brief presidential campaign in 2012, that the American people did not have the fortitude to endure the period of difficulty necessary to reverse the damage being done to the financial health of the United States through the loss of our manufacturing capabilities and trade deficits. President Trump is taking the necessary steps to reverse the current financial weakness of the United States, but what was weakened over the course of multiple administrations, and nearly destroyed during the Biden administration, will take longer than 2 months to reverse. If Congress is put in charge of tariffs, foreign governments will see an opening to drag their feet rather than negotiate fairer trade practices with the United States. We must give President Trump at least 6 months to repair the damage inflicted over the last 3 decades. President Reagan may have had a different view of tariffs, but had he been faced with such reduced manufacturing in this country, coupled with the invasion of illegal immigrants from both the southern and northern borders and the outrageous federal spending levels, he might have had a different view regarding tariffs and trade deficits.
ball...Some of the job increase may be a consequence of mass firings at the Federal level forcing workers to shift to the private sector. This gives me no confidence in our economy
tubi...if the govt would stop changing it up, the public would figure out how to make it work.
mark...The answer is "both". The Biden economy may still be fundamentally healthy, but Trump's meddling is reducing it to temporarily resilient. There is also a bit of misplaced confidence in Trump from those businesses that have imbibed the Kool-Aid. Tough times are ahead.
cica...This is the band playing on the deck of the Titanic after it hit the iceberg. The entire world’s economy is circling the drain right now. Wait till crypto collapses
grof...Tariffs and federal firings have not yet been factored in
lawe...Trump is making too many capricious challenges to our economy. Pushed too far, the American economy will collapse.
rick...We won't see the effects of Trump's policies on employment until we get data for April or May.
nanc...The administration’s policies of closing government offices and imposing tariffs will have a negative effect on the job market. Too many questions remain for companies to hire.
coll...Until these numbers reflect under-employment. And show improvements across the board for industries and for all demographics, they are outdated and don't give an accurate picture of what is happening.
rgar...Obviously very these jobs were not in the government. The last four years new jobs were mostly with the government. Tumps plan is working. LET HIM DO HIS JOB
geor...All the thousands of Government employees being fired won't show up until at least October as many will receive full pay through September - the end of the Fiscal Year. Some companies just notified workers they would be furloughed. until companies see the effect extreme tariffs will have on their businesses. We are just beginning to see the effects of the President's disdain for Canada and other countries as many travelers have cancelled their trips to the US and/or decided not to become American tourists. And with the expected rise in costs for almost everything Americans normally purchase everyday, more and more Americans will refrain from buying any unnecessary items - here comes the recession!
lw63...Everything is temporary until the long reaching effects start showing up.

Should the US use tariff relief as a bargaining chip in negotiations over TikTok’s ownership?

  • 69% No
  • 31% Yes

jeff...Trump does not know what he is doing
mrse...Tariffs are not a tool for short term gain; they reorder the whole economy
magi...Tariffs are un-justified, and if the Cheeto in Charge is masterminding a tariff relief to acquire a social media company we have sunken to a new low!
rgar...The Chinease have no choice but to sell or they loose everything. At least if they sell they get financial reward for selling. If it is shut down what do they get. Make them pay their tarrifs.
suet...This is
tubi...the US govt should not choose "winners and losers" or how they run the business, so long as it doesnt intentionally harm the public. the claim of "spying" is no more or less credible than the current apps that are knowingly "spying" on US citizens. (google, X, etc.)
chas...Like so many actions by this administration, this plan is like those of a mob boss.
kenh...That is just stupid thinking
tomp...Trump still thinks he is on a gameshow. What's behind door #3. Using US$ to negotiate with China over something that is supposed to have National Security implications is just STUPID!
rsle...The concern over TikTok as NATIONAL SECURITY. Is THAT something that should be "negotiated" by a loser like trump, a felon?
tere...POTUS should not use US government “tariffs”, actually simple extortion, to leverage China to sell Tic Tok to a US buyer. Whether employing “tariffs” or hawking Tesla or cryptocurrency, our snake oil salesman is destroying our economy.
srcl...It should remain separate.
cica...The average American doesn’t appear to be conscious of the national security, implications of the Chinese spying on us through their apps. TikTok author needs to be banned or brought on the board with American ownership on that app needs to be torn apart for back doors
toni...Tariffs should be used strategically to protect key industries not as a bargaining chip for a platform we can all live without!
eoli...That would be blackmailing
tomg...Although I'm a patriot and Navy vet, I hope that China and all other countries being hit with Tariffs push back and push back hard
lw63...Tik Tok is a platform we do not need. It is dangerous for national security... let it go.
jllm...All’s fair in love and war.
dan....Trumps a moron, just setting up friends to buy Tik-Tok
ham3...We have to take back the power we have given to the rest of the world otherwise we cannot lead

Do you live in an area where air pollution is a regular concern (e.g. smog alerts, industrial zones)?

jllm...I don’t need AI to see that a higher number of respondents are either democrats or independents, living in the suburbs with half a brain. When research tells us there’s a problem and we should do something, we do do something positive, not fire everyone who knows what there doing.
lw63...But it is very concerning as the current administration does not really believe that pollution is a problem, and with the rolling back of the climate change initiative, we stand to have more pollution. And likely more industrial zones.
aubr...Could it be that there is more pollution in highly-populated areas there people have lower incomes and fewer green spaces and so they are depressed because they don’t live in the country where we should be? They prescribe forest bathing for depression in some places, and that the physical pain caused my diseases from pollution - you know physical pain can cause depression! Not surprised by this at all.
bret...Yes and it is only benefiting big pharmaceutical companies
tomg...For those who answered No, I suggest they do a little more research
ebr....I live in a medium sized city and our air pollution comes from a fragrance factory. Usually don’t smell it, but a couple maybe three times a year, when the wind is just right.
meli...Air pollution concern is a global concern. Pollution respects no state boundaries. We’re in this together on our planet. At the least, let’s highlight this on Earth Day and take more action now.

walk...However, this “technology” is decades old. Just look at the suspension on Trailways buses and Airstream travel trailers from the 60s and 70s to name a couple. While perhaps improved, not sure this is news.
jllm...Not the science but application, happening all the time with one thing in common, cost efficient. Material and time.
ball...Medical Devices
lawe...My career has been spent working with chemists and engineers
tom....Appreciate getting science and technology related articles that have some scientific depth to them at a high level.
