Was the bipartisan deal to end the government shutdown the best possible compromise?

alfo...I wouldn’t call it a compromise, but it’s what should’ve happened from day one to avoid the shutdown.
csbr...The centrist Democrats sold out their party and folded.
esit...We all know that Republicans are not going to compromise to meet the Democrats demands around Healthcare. Dems folded just before any chance of winning.
leem...The fact that Republicans gave their power to a person only interested in billionaires and selling the presidency to the highest bidder is reprehensible. And no one wants to curtail the power of a want to be autocrats who is a convicted felon makes me want to leave this country forever. I recognize that no where in the world is perfect but at least some places puts the welfare of the least of us first!!!
usct...It might be good strategy to end the shutdown during the holiday period. If this agreement only goes to the end of January, 2026, then they can close the government down until they get an extension on ACA. Even the Republicans must see ACA extension as good policy. But they want to kill the ACA. The problem is they have had time since 2015 to come up with an alternative and have failed to do so. It says a lot about the present stagnation of the GOP.
serg...Too much selfish political interests from both sides as opposed to doing what is best for the people. It is a shame !
conc...AWESOME!!!
andr...Who knows. What is clear is that the govt is so ridiculously inept. $7T dollars of of budget and they can't figure it out. And both parties want it to get bigger and bigger. We are so f**ked.
jrv1...If you voted no. What’s the proper solution. Makes no sense to have unpaid workers, especially when Congress is getting paid. Bothe sides of the aisle. The exciting g news is the proposal that may give a $10,000 bonus to those who came to work each day
scol...Only 60 days! Congress not working for the people!
stev...The GOP would have let the Country be irreparably destroyed before acting responsibly. The healthcare subsidies will expire by law without them doing anything. Now they will have to vote against them on the record for that to happen. Meanwhile they would have destroyed the overall economy while destroying the lives of millions of people denying them food assistance and pay.
chai...Shouldn't end up causing a deficit since it is money that wasn't spent.
john...It empowers the president and republicans to be more authoritarian and bullying… there will likely be no favorable outcome to the threat to healthcare.. the republicans have agreed to discuss it, that only means they have managed the democrats and will work towards the outcome they want
larr...Caving in will cost ACA recipients. GOP will NEVER do anything to help ACA.
robs...This POINTLESS SHUTDOWN was all about the Democrats' failed, desperate attempt to continue taking $1.8 trillion from American taxpayers as the largest source of funding for the perpetual re-election of Democrats even if it meant holding the poorest Americans hostage and hurting them!!!!!! Refuse to believe this at your own peril and to the detriment of OUR country! Democrats proposed and voted into law Covid / Biden Era subsidies which Democrats insisted be paid directly to the Insurance companies with a 2025 expiration date. Democrats chose this expiration date, not Republicans. WHY was no Democrat legislation to extend the 2025 expiration date brought to the floor of either chamber of Congress during 2024? Because they had no more leverage in 2024 than they had now n 2025, but did that stop them from refusing to vote 14 times for the CR and causing the MOST STUPID AND LONGEST GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN IN HISTORY and inflicting unnecessary pain and cutting off food for the poorest Americans for SIX WEEKS!!!! NONE of these subsidies improve the quality of healthcare for the American people on Obamacare, not does it reduce their premiums or reduce their annual deductible which have skyrocketed in spite of promises to the contrary from Barrack Obama! Instead, 100% of this $1.8 trillion subsidy is paid to the exclusive benefit of the insurance companies which are, by far, the largest Democrat Party campaign contributor. This is all about taking $1.8 trillion from American taxpayers and turning it into the largest source of funding for the perpetual re-election of CORRUPT DEMOCRATS!
lisa...Now let’s release the TrumpStein Files.
nata...It leaves the budget, the deficit, healthcare subsidies and other important matters unresolved -- for another 6 weeks. Pffft.
grov...We have to get back on track as a country, with funds to operate our government. However, living beyond one’s means is not sustainable. Additionally, US citizens should not be paying for illegal immigrants’ housing, healthcare and food. Plus, we have to cut back waste and jobs will be lost to get a reasonable budget back in place.
hans...Nothing was achieved. The only thing that is more obvious is that president Trump will actually choose to hurt Americans or at the least, starve it's children. It is incomprehensible to think of a lower form of punishing his own people. We are Americans, who have fought for their country. Our Fathers have fought in wars and in some cases gave the ultimate sacrifice. To all the veterans Thank you for your service.
debs...Not the best but made it possible to gain support which is definitely needed. Way tooooo long and a messy situation for all affected.
pjpa...Not sure who wrote that story but it’s not accurate & biased on its face
lnsd...It didn’t protect healthcare subsidies.
moth...The senate, and the house both have a republican majority, and apparently the Democratic Party does too! Is there no leadership in the party ? After the great democratic election wins last week THIS is what happens? Pretty galling.
meho...No, because it wasn't bipartisan. Republicans didn't budge. The Democrats had to do it.
lest...The Dems needed to get something more concrete from the Republicans. At least a 1 year extension and a bi partisan group to come up with a proposal to deal with the issues with a date for a vote and a time line to get it done. Also no more running away from Washington by the Republican House. We need both houses there to do the job.
rosh...The reason for the shutdown were non-negotiable terms put forth for THE people.
stjo...Goverment shut down should not be used as leverage by eithier party . We need elected officials to settle our differances in Congress .
kelt...The whole Obamacare system was a joke from the beginning and cost taxpayers trillions over the years. The government funded and open market health insurance options need to be addressed and make incentives for insurance companies and medical providers to lower costs. Penalize pharmaceutical companies that advertise to 99% of non applicable people. Their Ad budgets are the reason they charge so much
lori...There was no bipartisan compromise. Democrats comprised and the health insurance for far too many will end because they can’t afford it.
suzc...We need the GOP to agree to REAL discussion on the debt ceiling and insurance premiums for ALL AMERICANS!!! The only bright side is that Speaker Johnson has to swear in our Congresswomen from AZ!!
bjef...Uh, it still screws people on healthcare, perhaps and you know the Republicans will not reinstate anything willingly.
vick...Affordable healthcare is a requirement for a civilized and most wealthy nation. Wonder what all the MAGA folks are gonna think when they lose their insurance?
cger...Unfortunately we had to rehire and provide back pay for a lot of bloated government workers, but at least at risk SNAP recipients are getting their money. Democrats are despicable people and will stop at nothing to destroy America.
livi...It feels like Dems are holding the economy hostage so they can get some of their budgetary items passed. They wanted to fund crazy stuff; a pineapple juice promotion in Benin, a dance class workshop in China, a Transgender Opera in Colombia. Why are taxpayers responsible for those? If government officials want those programs funded, use their own money, not our taxes. The amount of foreign entities we are giving money to is an abomination. Is anyone focused on our debt? We are spending over a trillion dollars a year on discretionary spending, but can't fund the salaries of our government employees? Our military? What kind of budget is that?
jade...The can continues to be kicked down the road!
akan...4million people are going to drop coverage and the rest of us are going to see our insurance triple. All because 8 old republicans couldn’t take the heat anymore. Thanks for that!?!?!?
nanc...So disappointed in how those Democrats caved. They’ll never get anywhere now on ACA subsidies because even if it passed in Congress, trump would veto it.
arth...Shutdowns such as this one is reality for killing the goose that lays golden eggs!
elis...1. No “moot point” on Epstein files. Women want justice. 2. Only extending healthcare through December? We need stability-at least for two years since there is no MAGA plan.
tuck...Everything our elected representatives do and say is just awful. The only people they serve are themselves. We need to fix our system
ligo...We cut our nose to spite our face, why bother to stand up to him, if caving was the outcome. WRONG.
cvcl...Can not fathom what is in the mind of the 51.1% who said no. That thinking is why so many people suffered in the shutdown.
roya...Health Care for millions of Americans must be a priority for our country. The current administration is not focused on what’s best for America but is being used by a corrupt and blatantly dishonest president to stay out of prison, enrich himself and punish those who have sought to preserve the rule of law. Our nation will survive in spite of this attempt to overthrow the will of good and decent people. Ignorance will not prevail.
mona...There was momentum on The Democratic side and a chance for a real compromise. Corporate Senators just caved for end of year profits and legislation. Very, very disappointing. Healthcare and food are necessities and should be first and foremost.
mlun...Democrats are weak and got nothing out of this deal.
jefe...They continue to want out of control spending.
layl...I depend on SNAP, I have two small children with no child support from the father. I think what Democrats were trying to do is important for healthcare, but food should come first.
atli...History has shown that appeasing an autocrat does not end well.
wate...They should have passed a clean bill
doct...The ONLY leverage the Democrats had was this shutdown. They now have zero leverage which will be demonstrated with the subsequent votes. FOOLS
robo...What comprise?
sdsa...Yet again the average person gets screwed over to support the wealthy. Moderate dems will be voted out
beck...Term limits please. Vote in people that can make decisions and get along. Shutting down the government is an embarrassment to our country and we are better than that!
rita...We’ll probably be back at square one at the end of January…no real solutions to health care subsidies. Democrats continue to flounder…
jeda...The CR should not address healthcare at all. We voted and no party should be allowed to use gov funding as leverage
mdul...This is a prime example of Dem’s unwilling to take the "win" (if such a word can be used in this useless posturing). Dem's swept every race & question last week, Trump’s approval rating is the lowest in POTUS history, and the needle continued to inch towards Trump being wholly blamed for the entire shutdown mess, as he should be. Democratic supporters finally had something to cheer about - Dem’s standing firm in defense of 40M+ Americans needing food and 24M Americans whose healthcare was being threatened. Trump specifically set out to use starvation as a tool in his political battle, not just using all the levers of federal government to hold hostage the food for 42M Americans (including 16M children) but then also threatening financial penalties on all states that stepped in to try to feed their constituents. Now, we find Dem’s have caved and appear to have gotten nothing for doing so. ACA subscribers have to make decisions during open enrollment without knowing their subsidy level (if any) and Dem’s have to just hope that Republicans will come to the table with even a smidgen of integrity to negotiate in good faith. Even that sliver of hope is misplaced and that was made evident immediately when Johnson said he was not going to guarantee such a vote. Also, even if he does bring a vote to the floor, Republicans have already made clear that they care less about food or health care for needy Americans than they do failing in line with their party. So it's all but impossible that any Republicans will risk Trump's ire and vote in favor.
carl...The ACA subsidies were a negotiated outcome from a past congressional agreement, that included a sunset provision. The parties have no hope of doing proactive work for the American people unless they can honor past agreements. In addition, too many families were operating on financial fumes. Ultimately I would advocate to cut congressional pay during any future shutdown, to give the parties some incentive to act more quickly.
jmco...If Congresswoman Beaty votes against restoring the government funding, she will be held accountable. Health benefits and subsidies for Americans should be a given. But that means for American citizens. Giveaways to people that aren't here legally is insane!

Is same-sex marriage primarily a civil rights issue or a matter of moral/religious belief?

  • 70% Civil rights issue
  • 18% Moral/religious belief
  • 13% Both equally

EmailComments
andr...The question largely ignores the obvious question and implication here: Why in the world do we need the govt's permission to marry? It should be between two consenting adults. The vast majority of the population misses this elephant in the room.
brad...Keep religion in the church and out of the government.
fcse...Marriage itself is moral/religious belief. But if people choose to enter into same-sex marriage as a civil right, that right must be respected.
cork...It's the law, based on prior case reviewed by the Supreme Court. This person has every right to resign from her government job which requires her to oversee the necessary paperwork of a same sex couple's marriage. Her moral/religious beliefs must be "checked at the door" if she chooses to continue her job. Or she could have just gotten another job! It was her choice and she obviously made a bad one.
earl...To not offend anyone, it should be civil issue, as I think most, if not all, religions define as between man and woman. And, importantly, religious marriages were/are also required to be licensed to be recognized civically/governmentally. I do not know about “common law” marriages, other than my personal belief that it should be licensed to be considered valid or recognized.
atli...Morality should not be confused with religion. Religious teaching is based in ancient beliefs that we would now consider immoral such as denying love between two people that didn't fit the biases of those dark ages.
robo...Those that oppose same sex marriages claim it’s a moral/religious issue, but it’s really a matter of hateful people forcing their ideology on others. If it was really a religious issue “Christians” would realize their intolerance goes against Christ’s teachings.
deri...As a lesbian in a 44 year relationship,, who had to wait 32 years to get married, I continue to be amazed by how concerned some religious people can be about love. They appear to be fine with hatred and cruelty - to immigrants, people of color and of course queer people. It has always seemed to me that if gay people are married, they are much less likely to behave in ways that those same religious people find offensive. Straight people settle down when they get married, too.
erwi...Every couple whether same sex or not have the right to be married. Religion and state have been constitutionally separate entities.
lisa...Release the TrumpStein Files.
dvmp...Love is love and should be a right for all!
arth...The woman, if her religion was that anti-gay strong, could have resigned her secular job. She didn’t have the right to have her cake and eat it too!
brid...It is neither and nothing. It is the same issue as when heterosexual people get married. It is a NON ISSUE - that should have been a choice in the question.
pken...We are not a theocracy!
kami...This is about the misguided actions that legally redefined what marriage is. Same sex partnerships legally should/could form legal “civil unions “, with equivalent rights as heterosexual couples have when they are legally married.
meho...Separation of church and state, people. Religions have no right to force their "judgments" on anyone else.
doct...A person with religious beliefs may not impose their notions on someone else who does not share their worldview or finds their perspective to be anathema. Believing that you have God in your pocket, does not make it so.

Should the BBC be held financially accountable if the documentary on Trump’s Jan. 6 speech was found to be misleading?

  • 60% Yes
  • 40% No

EmailComments
newb...The BBC is in effect owned by the British people. If the US President goes ahead with his threats this will be an attack on the UK, for he will be held liable.
walk...Why No?, misleading slander, especially from a presumed unbiased press is also a bit of false advertising. That’s no news reporting, that’s political spin editorialism to advance one’s cause or beliefs
beck...They are paid to tell the truth not follow their own agenda. The media has lost all credibility and continues to do so. Journalists are not following stories or doing the hard work. Start doing what is right or move over.
capt...Trump needs to be in Jail!
livi...News has become "entertainment" and not real news. It's all about the drama. BBC was after ratings, not truth. I think they should be punished for misleading the public and creating an outcry, not to mention falsely disparaging, by slander, a reputation.
mbec...In any other country (with the exception of the USA) they would have been behind bars, or worse. It’s time to start making people responsible for their actions.
fcse...It should go to court to discern the truth and, if it was found misleading, a just settlement. BBC does not need to add to Trump’s millions.
ebr....I’m glad somebody is recording his egregious actions. The more that do, the better.
norg...Yes because of the degree of misrepresentation. This is not a casual mistake.
flem...Trump received no damage. When the documentary was aired no one complained. It was a mistake by the BBC. An apology is sufficient
cger...It cost FOX $800M for lying about Dominion voting machines, Stephanopoulos from ABC lied and slandered Trump and it cost them, and CBS falsely edited a 60Minutes interview costing them millions. TDS is a terrible thing on both sides. BBC INTENTIONALLY tried to mislead just likE CBS by editing speeches. They should pay dearly.
tagi...FOX NEWS LIES EACH AND EVERY DAY WITHOUT ACCOUNTABILITY
spro...40.5% of you have TDS so bad they think it’s ok to lie, sensor speeches and do whatever it takes to bring down Trump. Get help.
jrv1...Consequences
meho...Is every right-wing media feed with misleading information being sued? Suing is just a game that Trump always plays for personal profit. But what else is new?
jean...People, especially the media, need to stop capitulating to the wannabe dictator.
doct...Absolutely not under any circumstances
belc...Blatantly tampering in the USA election must be punished.
bjef...perhaps, pay Trump a dollar. The greatest liar in the world shouldn't get a pass on any of his lies. At a billion a lie, what's that come out to what he owes the Unites States people and the people of the world. Trump's intent was clear. They should have left it in and explained his BS half hearted attempt to try to keep it peaceful. Of course, that's why he sat for 3 hours before trying to stop it, of course: because he was so peaceful.
kelt...Even England tried to lie about Trump. They joined the other main street media liars
beck...It’s time the news journalists be accountable for their actions
alys...Yes because everyone should be held to high standards when it comes to this stuff! While I don’t support Trump, I wouldn’t want this done to a candidate I did support.
sara...Our news outlets need to go back to actually reporting the facts and not come up with some narrative that is biased and filled with political agendas.
msch...‘Found to be misleading’? Obviously and intentionally misleading, you mean.
docd...It shouldn’t stop at the BBC but those involved in the fake insurrection. Pelosi and those at the DOJ
brad...Literally EVERYTHING on Fox News is misleading.
ja4w...If they edited it, yes. If they didn’t edit it and didn't check the source for editing, yes.
crai...When a “news” organization edits and alters the news to fit its agenda it is causing damage to those directly involved and those people should be compensated. It also damages the news agencies credibility and changes have to be made to fix the culture and remove the guilty parties.
robs...$1,000,000,000 PAID TO THE ORDER OF DONALD J TRUMP
andr...Honestly, I'm not sure. But what is clear is that MSM has become 95% propaganda from both sides of the political isle as well as corporations. With emerging social medial and independent journalism proliferating, this is blatantly obvious. And, fortunately, MSM is "losing the plot" so to speak - only Boomers and die hard Republican / Democrat religious fanatics are actually listening to what Fox, MSNBC, ABC, CNN, etc. says anymore.
john...If so then all media should be accountable, not just negative against the administration.
dhwf...Now the US needs to punish those who lied- Comey and the rest -Russia and HID the Biden laptop TRUTH
jamf...Absolutely !! He was set up...
krp2...False news needs to stop. It doesn’t matter which party it condemns or helps
vern...This is an easy question for anyone who actually cares about the TRUTH…and we can still dream about a ‘press’ that is sharing the news instead of their own BS (no matter what their political views are).

Should merchants be allowed to reject certain types of credit cards (e.g., premium rewards cards) to control their costs?

  • 74% Yes
  • 26% No

EmailComments
bjef...I'm not that stupid...The worthless little 1 % payback I get from my premium cards as opposed to an 8% premium sometimes given to certain businesses? Who do you think is paying the little payback? Not the credit card! So clearly the merchant should say no if they want to. Those credit card deals only mean something if you're paying for the card to get certain benefits. I carry both my premium card for it's unlimited credit limit and my daily cards because the premium card isn't accepted everywhere.
cand...It should be the choice made solely by the merchant as to which cards they honor. Merchants could choose to honor no cards and use only cash if they so desire to as well.
bnig...But, they need to post their exclusion of premium cards
rwwi...What is lost in the shuffle here is the benefits the merchants get from digital payments
suzc...It's not safe to carry cash and I oppose all merchants who do not accept credit cards and those who pass the fee along to consumers.

Do you think natural foods and supplements can realistically replace prescription drugs like Ozempic for managing blood sugar?

earl...Common sense and real vs artificial; allergies vs side effects.
srwa...Only eating right will do the job
cger...Where do you think Big Pharma gets it's inspiration from......from nature. But you can't profit from nature, so they synthesize it into molecules then repackage it and charge sheeple billions to make profits.
paul...Didn't we already have diet controlled blood sugar programs for type 2 diabetes?
deri...I think too many people would find the timing too problematic. But it might help many people and the supplements could be supplied by a no-cost prescription. Some of the supplements can also be fairly expensive.
scot...I've seen people who started Ozempic. No natural compound available right now is gonna take weight off like that stuff.
klar...More research 🔬
jdfl...No surprise that eating the right kind of foods can improve your overall health and help your body run more efficiently!
mequ...I’ve tried them all and do it all and it’s just not the same unfortunately. These supplements do not affect the ghrelin or lepton response responsible for feelings of hunger and satiety. They do help with blood sugar but that is not the same.
sar....Is it possible, yes. But it relies on behavioral shifts in the individuals that would benefit from these methods which is the harder and less reliable factor.
mmne...The story oversimplifies diabetes.
cacg...Na
rach...Yes, but it also requires discipline from the individual, which is hard.
cand...I believe that natural foods and supplements can help replace prescription drugs like Ozempic for weight loss and blood sugar but I'm not sure they can completely replace the drugs. Realistically, it is easier for people to take the drug than to watch what they eat.
nanc...It would be great if it could!
