sing... | I worked in an industry that used H1-B employees. The companies used these lower-wage employees to keep wages for all down. There are some situations that require foreign workers (like native-language translators), but in general it reduces the number of tech positions available to citizens. |
curi... | Talent propels innovation. |
rjtl... | These workers are vital in many specialties and we are not producing enough skilled Americans. |
dima... | Nope, as a I high tech earner I pay over 100k in taxes. Companies would move those people overseas and probably increase their pay in other countries rather than paying 100k fee |
dian... | No, we need these immigrants and putting such an outrageous price tag on their visa will just make them go to other countries or make the local business pay the prioe, neither of which will help our economy or our ranking in the world economy. |
larr... | Reform needs to happen for US visas and immigration. Companies are using the current system to force down wages in certain industries, while places we need to rely on immigrants is targeted with enforcement. |
joni... | Too many foreigners here learning valuable information and then taking it back to their home country. |
mare... | It will shift more jobs out of USA additionally lead to a loss of tax revenue. |
patc... | It's a tariff on skills and intelligence, and part of Trump's commitment to reversing America's brain drain advantage over Europe and Asia. Smart people don't like him. |
zkig... | Less money going out, more Americans will have jobs, we will hire high skilled foreign nationals. |
lkdn... | It will discourage bright people from coming to the USA |
esta... | it's an investment in the future of our country and those that will benefit immensely when they obtain the visa |
drga... | The loss of talent and personnel is only part of the impact. Consumers will pay in price hikes by those companies who must dole out $100K for needed talent. |
kara... | For companies based in the US: Until there is proof that Americans can’t do the same job, or there are no more available Americans to fill the position, this low-wage visa scheme should be considered “taking” jobs from Americans. |
weis... | Employers shouldn't be punished in order to hire the best and brightest employees. Employers are U.S. based, and here paying U.S. taxes, residing in U.S. homes, sending children to U.S. schools. As a businessowner myself, I would never be able to hire a qualified worker, if forced to have this fee. |
ejmi... | That money will find it's way the the trump family pockets. It will make prices soar, as companies will be on the hook to pay this yearly fee. |
cger... | Your progressive Leftist readers just love opening the borders to any and everyone, no matter how they affect America. |
tomf... | We need to take away the cost savings incentive from using lower-paid foreign workers in USA jobs. Then spend more on education for IT specialists. Not easy to do but will have long-term benefits. |
sjoh... | will lead to these jobs being outsourced. At least the H1Bs were paying US taxes. |
jami... | The U.S. has been an economic stronghold for as long as it has, because of its ability to harness a diverse pool of talent and promote favorable results. |
robn... | High tech startups, especially biotech sector is prime benefactor. 100k is too steep for any start up relying on angel funds, grants etc. Besides, even grant funding for such sectors would not allow usage of funds for this purpose. These jobs benefit the US technological leadership position and therefore any impact would directly harm the US technological leadership |
mcsk... | Tech firms need talent and if it’s not available in the United States, then they will look outside the country. Any and all costs that Company has to pay for is going to be passed on to the consumer so that means higher prices for American product’s and services . Foreign countries will now have the edge because they be able to find talent for less money. |
mich... | Canada ought to welcome these folks and companies that need rational policies. |
lisa... | As a career talent acquisition leader in the tech sector, I can assure you that H1-B seekers are not taking U.S. worker jobs. The problem lies in the unavailability of U.S. talent and the need to fix our education system. |
dann... | The tech firms make no effort to seek local employees and instead take advantage of the system to hire foreign workers to reduce their cost. It's time to make some changes! |
cesv... | USA need skilled workers USA don’t have enough people to fill special tech positions Foreign workers willing to work overtime most of the time and willing to work long hours |
jmed... | Hopefully it will incentivize these tech companies and others to invest more in training and hiring American workers. |
bxfd... | It favorably impacts employment of US citizens. What’s not to like? |
hine... | Many other countries won’t even allow that reciprocal type of visa to Americans who want to go to their countries to work, because they are protecting those jobs for their citizens. Quid pro quo , but we at least can make the tax payers some money if the companies want to hire from abroad and not from within the US. |
ylal... | H1B gets the intelligent people here from all over the world. Now those individuals will go to our competitors |
trag... | While companies are employing a large percentage of foreign workers they may be the most qualified for those jobs. If we continue to decimate higher education we will have an even smaller population of qualified American workers. It seems that the rapid initiation of a very large fee for visas will cause chaos and a disruption of production, all of which may have an adverse effect on the economy. A gradual, planned increase in the fee for visas would be a better approach |
mick... | Just another shakedown by this regime designed to have tech companies fall in line with Trump’s need for fealty. |
ashi... | Actually there won't be a big impact. It may slightly harm the economy but in the long term companies can still use the L1A and L1B visas and bring in foreign workers using those channels. The workers will not be able to change employers or apply for permanent residency. They will have to go back once the visa expires. |
geng... | This will not only harm the economy in the tech sector but will be a brain drain and deprive our US students of the higher educational experts we so badly need for medical and other professional training. |
jjai... | It will cause the offshoring of jobs in order to avoid the $100k fee. They will result in few jobs for Americans, unfortunately. Those offshore jobs will no longer be paying federal, state, and FICA taxes thereby hurting our economy. |
lizz... | Bringing in the brightest minds from all over the world is why we have built such a competitive advantage in technology. While I understand the desire to support more Americans in tech jobs - and believe strongly in finding the right balance of policies around education to support that - it’s not a zero sum game. This seems like a disastrous policy that only reduces our competitiveness. |
slow... | We have talent in USA Our focus needs to be better education for our kids and better IT role models |
mega... | I do think reform is needed. Having your immigration status tied to your job can allow employers to take advantage of people but this isn’t the way. I work at a science non profit and this has caused chaos and fear |
crai... | Unfortunately the H-1B visa has become a way for companies to pay less than the typical wage for that position. This has depressed demand to fill these positions with US citizens. The new fee should help bring the original goal of the H-1B visa program. |
dduc... | Do we want to hire the best or not? Hire the best talent where it is found. |
dmis... | I sell and deliver internationally, I almost every other country you have to prove that the work being done during the installation can only be done by my team, otherwise the work must be done by local persons at my expense. The HB1 process has been abused, foreign companies setup shop in the US, but construct and manage facilities with mostly foreign workers. If an applicant is truly uniquely qualified to do a job then I suspect the $100K fee (paid by the corporation) would be a drop in the bucket. |
kvas... | It will hurt the economy and America in general. It's no surprise that the Thing-in-the-White-House only wants rich people to enter into the U.S. The Thing only thinks rich people are worth listening to or even having around. What other world leaders have exhibited that tendency? Maybe Louis XIV? Czar Nicholas? How does it ultimately turn out for those types? |
nsti... | The US is still not training students in the tech sectors so these employees have to be brought from oversees. This exorbitant fee will just encourage the tech companies to move these jobs overseas. |
gibl... | More jobs for Americans. $ for America if companies choose to hire foreign workers. India is a big player and aligning with Putin, this action reduces our exposure to national security concerns |
fjlo... | The US has about 4% of the world’s population. If the US hopes to be among the world’s leaders it must attract talent from around the world and from all walks of life, retain it and motivate it to bring each person’s talent to full expression. The H1-B program is one way to do that. I am sure there are opportunities to improve the program but charging a $100,000 fee is one indication that the Administration just doesn’t get it. |
jmmd... | This is just to quieten the more vocal anti-immigration (including legal immigration) voices within the Republican Party. |
usct... | It will eliminate talented workers needed by the American economy. |
jaso... | Tech worker job creates 3 additional jobs in the US. Big pool of talent is the H1B group of tech workers. We are heading to a recession. |
rick... | Ignorance is bliss in this administration! |
nanc... | I think companies will be less likely to pay this, especially smaller startups. They are also getting screwed by this administration because of tariffs, and aren’t able to get special deals like Apple and Nvidia, which means less competition in the tech sector and an uneven playing field. |
lubi... | It is not just tech firms. A number of small businesses rely on workers they can not get here. |
cass... | We are importing workers to bring costs down for employment making Americans with the same qualifications less likely to be hired. We should put our workers first and not just be looking for the cheapest hire. This will even the playing field. |
robe... | Anyone know where the money collected will go ? If ear marked for US based staffing development might have a chance to help, besides it not painful enough for the tech co would need to be consistent with salary here and ear marked for domestic programs. |
wbub... | Pay for Play. So UNAmerican. |
lora... | This will stop the major tech companies of hiring people from other countries with lower salaries |
jev.... | America is winning by attracting talent from all over the world: bringing in some of the brightest minds and individuals qualified for these visas, who then strengthen the economy, spend their money here, and eventually become Americans contributing to stronger scientific, technological, and economic sectors. Many of them do not come from wealth, and without access, they may never be given the chance to contribute because of the new steep fees. |
oliv... | Skilled jobs with H1B visas will be moved overseas. Companies will not hire these people in the US.. reduces tax receipts and downstream jobs/revenues from the H1B workers |
cica... | Possibly it might be quite good. That’s if the money goes into job training and developing homegrown talent. Of course, if the money is just going to go into Trump’s pocket, that’s no good. And that’s a distinct possibility. |
milt... | I think it is obvious that Trump is in a fantasy world where progressive taxes are radially reduced and a Tariff based tax and fee based system will magically replace it. This gives the illusion that everyone benefits and ignores the cost to consumers. History tells us this is a fool's plan and the gap between the super wealth and those below that will only grow. Besides, aren't we a capitalistic country? Why limit foreign talented labor and exclude them for small companies where $100,000 fee maybe prohibited? Follow the money. It's going into Trumps pockets and his friend's bank accounts. Revolutions are brewed when only a few benefit and the masses suffer. |
anna... | Helps with US employment in the tech sector. May help.prevemt the lay offs and hiring of h1b visa holders who ate paid significantly less. |
kell... | It will force company’s to hire from the Usa. If not it will help control the companies that are overseas trying to make money off the people coming in by helping to find them jobs , and take a percentage of their paycheck. |
jvda... | This cost is not strategic. It is self serving and spiteful and does not benefit the American economy. |
eliz... | It’s insane that thx share of IT workers with H-1B visas has risen from 32% in FY 2003 to over 65%!!! |
ned.... | Another form of tariffs ! |
glad... | Intel is already on the ropes. This new move will cause slow downs and frustration. I thought the new push was to promote production. |
caff... | It may impact the supply of qualified skilled tech workers. We should first prioritize and incentive in the US the training of US tech workers, then perhaps phase in ain increase in the H-1B. Trump is dumber than a box of rocks ans has no comprehension whatsoever of economics and governments role and how it operates. |
rb81... | It’s will help with United States work force to keep jobs for US citizens |
How do you feel about the recognition of Palestinian statehood?
- 63% Positive
- 37% Negative
Comments | |
---|---|
nmik... | Like all liberal politicians, they knee jerk their reactions and decisions. Palestinian people have suffered sure, but they are all complicit in their leaders' atrocities. They've been used as shields, they abuse their women, they've been constantly attacking Israel , then their attack brutally killing women and children, rape, killing children in front of their parents. taking hostages and abusing them. Not giving the hostages up for peace or a cease fire was the last straw. Something needed to change. |
hele... | Palestinians have the same rights, if not more, than Israelis, to have a recognized State! |
usct... | It is a challenging situation. Statehood will not take place as long as Israelis and Palestinians are against it. |
phol... | For more than 60 years a proposed two nation solution has been resoundingly rejected by the Palestinians - They do not want it, what they want is Israel to be gone entirely! "From The River To The Sea" means they have zero intent to ever accept a two state solution. |
lkdn... | Bindi and Trump need to see that the world is not with them |
lzmd... | Scary times when so many Western parts of the world sides and rewards like minded murderers like those of 9/11. |
jmed... | Like the Isralies, Palestinians need a homeland! |
lope... | Compare map of Palestine in 1946 to 2000. And now Israel is bent on complete eradication. |
mind... | Without statehood Israel will continue to build settlements and treat Palestinians as less than. |
hine... | It will formalize them to be subject to trade and many other formal means of control amd openness to econmic controls. It should not allow Hamas to be taken off of the terrorist list and protected though. |
tlc4... | Greedy never wins |
ed.g... | Bad ideas: -Rewarding Hamas for perpetrating a massacre on 10/7 -Rewarding Fatah/Abbas for rewarding hit jobs on Israelis -Rewarding Gazans for allowing 300-400 miles of terror tunnels and related entrances to be built under their homes, mosques, hospitals, school but no shelters for its citizens |
trag... | I think the only feasible solution to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East is a two state solution. This has been proposed and rejected several times but I don’t see any other avenue toward peaceful coexistence. This is not a condemnation of Israel or any acceptance of Hamas, but a statement that there has been enough killing and enough death of innocent people. I don’t know how the existence of a Palestinian state would impact the ongoing attacks by Hamas, but I don’t think continuing the fighting will ever result in the defeat of Hamas. We need to do what we can to facilitate peaceful coexistence and free the remaining hostages. |
trac... | Stop the genocide! |
cger... | There is NO Palestinian state. There is no one to run a Palestinian state. They NEVER existed and if something were to form in some adulterated fashion it would be controlled by Iran as a terrorist state. |
supi... | Israel offered Palestinian statehood in 1937-1938, 1947-1948, 1967, 1993, 2000-2001 and 2007 and each time the Palestinian leadership refused. Although I do not agree with Netanyahu's extreme hawkish approach-- Israel needs to somehow be included--there are no simple solutions. Peace to the Israeli people--peace to Palestine. |
cica... | Everybody needs a homeland. Just asked the Israelis. |
creo... | All you people who answered yes to this question are stupid and you don’t know history and I hope you never have a say in my future |
dr.p... | They don’t deserve a state they have destroyed everything and terrorize others |
katl... | Israel does not have the right to take away Palestine’s land. |
shan... | I would prefer peace and prosperity for palistinians and israelis and appose using the palestinians as a mechanism of war and constant termoil. |
ryan... | This is long overdue, and Israel’s war crimes should absolutely be punished. It’s a travesty what they have done in Gaza. |
emil... | Israel is a terrorist state. Palestine has the right to exist and be free from occupation. |
wigg... | As long as it is not HAMAS or any other terrorist group |
leem... | The Palestinians are a beard cover for hamas militants. Israel would not be safe. Most people are ignorant of the history. |
hdpo... | The Palestinians already have a state; it’s called Jordan. |
alro... | Appeasing terrorists never works! |
joll... | Israel is a terrorist state. It began as an act of terrorism and it has acted as a state of constant terror on the Palestinian people for over 75 years. Palestinians are Semites! Suppressing support for Palestinian children and civilians is antisemitism. The genocide in Gaza is not making Jews around the world and in Israel safer. Have you witnessed the protests in Israel against their criminal leadership? Zionism is an extreme racist ideology and does not represent the Jewish faith. |
jmbe... | Why do we continue to ally ourselves with Netanyahu's campaign of genocide? How many more innocent civilians must be bombed or starved to death before we say that enough is enough?lol |
rwun... | The 78 year red herring. "Two State Solution," who is kidding who. As Israel was made a sovereign state, Palestine should have been made a sovereign state. Who has been the puppet master of US middle east policy who has turned so much of the larger region into countries distrusting of the US. Answer, between Israel and Palestine who has overtly and covertly been taking land from the other. |
bsor... | This is an action long overdue. The process remedies agreements made during and after WWI. The present Israeli government is illegally taking land from Palestinians and forcing the continuing violence. Hopefully our USA will emulate these actions. |
lora... | This will not work since the Palestinians will be too greedy and want other countries to build their country. |
ejmi... | It should have been done many years ago! Israel is not the country doing genocide against the Palestinians |
paul... | Nothing but Hamas who want to kill Jews- never forget October 7! |
what... | We need to stop this madness, and recognize it for what it is: genocide. |
geng... | Palestine has been a "state" since 1947 and a cultural entity long before that. The Nakba tried to destroy Palestine, displacing millions who have kept their identity despite the diaspora (much like the Jews in exile). |
derr... | Hamas must be eradictaded... They are like a cancer! Israel and the middle east cannot be healthy if they exist... and what they did to Israel citizens and are still doing is despicable! Israel should move faster to eliminate them because people are forgetting how evil they are! |
oyst... | Until Hamas is destroyed Israel is not safe |
kelt... | More terrorist would evolve |
slow... | As long as all terrorist groups are abolished from that area |
suet... | Israel is committing acts of war everyday. Na eye for an eye has been more than accounted for. |
jamf... | We have to focus on eradicating Hamas!! This support of Palestine means nothing if Hamas is allowed to terrorize people... |
vick... | If the Palestinians would vote out Hamas as their leadership a Palestinian state should be designated |
beth... | Stop the genocide. |
kvas... | Anything that irritates Old Fat, Ugly, and Orange is good by me. |
How do you feel about the requirement for journalists to sign a pledge regarding unauthorized reporting?
- 72% Negative
- 25% Positive
- 3% Other

egli... | Freedom of the press is critical to sustaining a democracy. The collective inertia of press suppression is very alarming. Jefferson said it best, “Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.” |
robe... | Agree with these guys we the public will know nothing, if they want that and want to change the name to dept of war then they will need to declare these ops as decoration of war act and go to congress for funding and approvals cant have it both ways |
hsam... | Since we are now using the military to control domestic issues, it is more important than ever to have civilian oversight of the military. We already know the biggest security threat is the Secretary of Defense (War). |
ned.... | Freedom of the ? |
heig... | Free speech overreach! We must protect the 1st Amendment! |
mr.h... | What does the government have to hide from the American people? |
kvas... | Traitor Don's next step toward turning the U.S. into his fascist dictatorship. Shakespeare said first we kill all the lawyers. Traitor Don knows that you also need to kill the press. |
oneo... | Why would anyone be against this? The press tells the US, they've told the world! Granted I would like to be kept informed, but not at the expense of a potential enemy having that same information. |
jamf... | Thank God! The press must understand th |
walk... | Come on, how do you have a strategy, when telling other side your plans and weaknesses. Really?? |
cger... | There is a lot of false information reporting (take Jimmy Kimmel as an example) and reporting of leaked information that is considered "PRIVLIDGED" either to protect people or projects. ( early release of Roe vs Wade) |
csbr... | What are trying to turn the US into? Russia? N Korea? Thanks y’all for Making America Suck Again. Don’t comply, resist. |
lind... | More maga moron nazi tactics to control our lives and our thinking!! |
nmik... | Journalists can't be trusted. This is the only way to ensure sensitive information wont be leaked. |
rjfe... | Mre of the Trump regime moving to control any and all public access to information. |
trag... | If this were an isolated event I might see some acceptable efforts to strengthen national security, however, in light of a spate of media restrictions, I see this as another nail in the coffin of democracy and more stepping stones toward autocracy. The Pentagon was rather loose with classified information during some of its phone conferences earlier this year and no one voiced any objection to Trump’s storing boxes of classified documents in the ballrooms and bathrooms of MaraLago. As dissent is silenced in the media and press access is limited at the White House and Pentagon, information is being controlled and restricted to what the current regime would like the public to know. It is all very frightening. |
nanc... | The public will no longer get independent reporting, only what the government wants it to see. Very alarming! |
creo... | I don’t trust the media and they don’t have a track record of telling the facts |
lori... | I agree with this |
jeff... | Unbelievable!!! |
hine... | The problem is that you cannot trust them to tell the truth so they should acknowledge in writing that if they don’t they will go to jail. Lying is tantamount to treason against the country so there must a price for refocusing the morals in journalism to de politicize it. |
edc.... | It reflects a lack of trust in reporting. |
mdul... | It's unfortunate but wholly expected. The first rule in the dictator handbook is that you must control the information available to the governed. He even acknowledged that his "Fake News" initiative that he started before his first term was intended to discredit legitimate news sources so that his followers would have no access to facts, and his detractors would be relegated to the fringes. His most recent and visible efforts have been plain to see and, just this past week, he noted that he thinks he'll now use the FCC chair to threaten loss of broadcast licenses to any operation that says negative things about him. In the specific case of the DOD, Hegseth previously even used polygraph data to identify people speaking with the press and fired anybody that he thought simply wasn't sufficiently loyal to Trump (not the Constitution). There are numerous reasons why a free and independent press is so critical to a successful democracy but, most importantly among them is that the press helps to keep the government accountable to citizens. Trump wants exactly the opposite - his central government wielding all power over its citizens and organizations. He must continue to push a free press into the shadows to achieve his objectives and this is not the end of the path to his goal of a single leader authoritarian regime. |
rose... | Another incursion into the freedom of speech |
ryan... | Welcome to the United States of Russia. |
lope... | Freedom is being eroded slowly. |
kjla... | More restrictions on freedom of speech |
cica... | This is wrong , Un-American and unconstitutional. |
avaa... | Push back against authoritarianism go to China Russia or n Korea if you want to live like that but not in United stayes |
lkdn... | This administration is trying to keep the public uninformed. Our representatives think that their election proves that we want to be kept in the dark. Lack of information about weather, air pollution, disease outbreaks, government failures, unemployment, the economy, scientific breakthroughs etc makes us all weak and allows government and the American oligarths to run roughshod |
cand... | In this day and age, I believe it is very possible that a "journalist" may be a "spy" for another country. I also believe that not all journalists are trust worthy in keeping quiet on some things that need not be shared to the entire population of the world and with social media being world wide, things will get out to people we would prefer not have such informations. If I could believe that journalists were not out for the sensationalistic aspect and/or money I might feel differently but alas I feel that our media is more interested in the "scoop" or the money rather than our safety.. |
atgi... | The Press must understand the role they play in spreading hatred and skewing truth. This must stop! |
mses... | I believe in Freedom of the Press. |
ende... | These are acts that most dictators enact before they engage in a coup, to misinform and control the masses. If Hegeth was so worried about security he should be more careful about his group messaging |
gwen... | An unfettered press is required for true freedom of speech. |
tere... | Democracy dies in darkness. |
lora... | The Media is corrupt and needs to be made accountable. |
katl... | Sounds like the President is restricting freedom of speech again. |
tlc4... | Violates the First Amendment |
usct... | Just another authoritarian action on the part of this administration. |
adus... | In recent times journalists have gone from reporting the facts to conjuring them to suit a narrative and gain ratings |

After my cataract surgery I no longer need any glasses except when my eyes are tired and the print is small, so my motivation to try anything new is limited at the moment! |
