Do national security concerns justify tech tariffs, even if they could affect innovation?

mama...These Tariffs are ludicrous! They only hurt the very people they claim to protect, namely US citizens and US businesses! Enough already! I so wish we had a vote of no confidence here in the US! I fear the damage he is creating will take a very long time to recover from!!!!!!!
brod...“National Security” is the default justification for suspending rights and civil liberties.
vnot...trade war is not a new tool in government pressure tactics. It works sometimes for negotiation between countries on goods exchange like during Clinton's time between French and US wine tariffs. It does not work today (at least for now). China was/is one of the primary suppliers of goods in the US. We got a low production cost, which enriched US companies, moved most of the manufacturing jobs from the US to China (and other countries), and at the same time allowed China's economy to grow to the point it started to worry the US government. Then COVID-19 happened, and the US government printed an enormous amount of paper money not covered by anything. China created an alternative to US SWIFT clearing, Russia dumped $900B exchanging it to yen. The war in Ukraine happened, then the Middle East/ Israel conflicts. Russia is looking into alternative energy buyers like China. Mexico and some South American countries are looking into China as a cheaper and possibly more stable alternative. We need a strong dollar, desired by others like before. I have no idea how this can be achieved right now, but it is the only solution.
elys...The "national security concerns" are just the latest nonsense excuse for a major economic shift that lacks fully-baked or explained strategy.
tuli...Common sense, target tariffs are fine; these are absurd. Incentivize companies to move production to ally countries. Making everything here is nonsensical unless you want your smartphone to cost $4,000
john...Trump has no idea what he’s doing. Nor does he care.
gena...The entire Signal text team is a national security threat. Also other actions within. To include befriending Putin. There were not even reprimands or firing of Hegseth at very least. I can't imagine explaining that to my platoon when I was a Signal platoon leader in the army. Do all that. Then we'll figure out tariffs on China. Or not.
kare...This tariff nonsense is completely fabricated by Trump.
wolf...We must make critical electronics , pharmaceuticals, transportation and defense domestically here in USA.
jllm...Nothing like feeling safe
dona...If just some of the products from China end up being made in the United States, in the long run it is better In the meantime, I can just end up. getting along with less product. s
ebr....When will people start ignoring Trump and his tantrums? He's an overgrown child.
susa...2 quick points (of which books are written) 1. Study the numbers; there is a huge imbalance in trade with China and most other countries in which he US is taking huge losses! 2. Listen to US national security officials from all political parties; China's leadership and the various Chinese data hackers have similar goals intended to enhance their wealth/pockets at the expense of US citizens. Note: You may not like the current US president, but you and me, our children and grandchildren will benefit from his emphasis on fixing trade balance ( and how our tax dollars have been mismanaged.)
ecek...In theory, yes, though I’m unconvinced that the current tariffs have anything to do with national security.
serg...China is a potential military enemy
jrv1...Higher prices for all.
cica...This administration hides behind national security, the same way they hypocritically hide behind religion and patriotism
mdul...Legitimate national security concerns do justify tech tariffs but the key there is the word, "Legitimate". Making up a security concern to justify actions does not legitimize the actions of this administration. Take TikTok for example. There are true national security concerns there but Trump is taking the opposite side of the coin, defying the will of the legislative branch and ignoring the concurrence from the judicial branch.
mbul...Specifically, what national security concerns are you even talking about?
mjd1...Leave the tech world alone
chri...Assuming foreign policy experts are vetting the nutty Trump ideas, then yes
to55...Trump is a BS ARTIST !

Should the international response to civilian-targeted strikes be primarily diplomatic or military?

  • 71% Military support
  • 29% Diplomatic pressure

EmailComments
serg...Russia only understands military superiority
amyf...There is so much corruption in Ukraine. Zelenskyy needs to stop. I don’t want any of our military over there.
mbul...Putin won’t stop until he’s stopped.
mdul...Trump made clear that he would resolve the Russia-Ukraine war in his first day in office. We're now 83 days in and all he has done in the war is given Putin everything Putin wanted, alienated the Ukrainians, and managed to build an adversarial relationship with our greatest allies throughout modern history.
to55...Russia should be declared a Terrorist Nation . For Bombing innocent civilians during Mass on Palm Sunday , Putin Should be tried for War Crimes !
ebr....They take 34 Ukrainian souls, we should take 75 Russian ones. Hopefully on Easter Sunday. We have given Putin too much leniency.
elys...We have to end the violence, not multiply it and further antagnoize violent actors.
news...Putin doesn’t care about diplomatic pressures.
pros...Only military response! Terrorists do not keep diplomatic talks. They are not negotiable, they don't care about any world established rules, they push for their own agenda. Any rhetoric like 'diplomatic actions' or 'deep concerns' only sends a message to the world that there will be no consequences for any terrorist actions.
fcse...Russia needs to be taught that it cannot get away with these strikes. Hitting Russia would stir popular unrest and push the peace process.
cmar...Why not both?
usct...Historically the Russians have only respected military force. And they will drive a truck through any treaty or cease fire opening. Don’t force them into a corner, but present them with a united front of military power.
cica...Ukrainians must be given everything they need to defend themselves

Would you support mining rare earths in the U.S. despite environmental concerns?

  • 64% Yes
  • 36% No

mspu...We need to provide our own materials and not be so dependent on foreign suppliers.
pete...We CAN mine rare earth elements in the US, and we CAN do it with minimal environmental damage. However, it wont be cheap, and it cannot happen quickly and easily.
jtro...It is a National strategic necessity.
mdul...Although the Trump administration has made clear that is sees no place for considering environmental concerns, they are critical to our modern economy and we should mine them in the US with proper environmental protections. The bigger problem here, though, is availability. I have highlighted this key chess move available to China since this whole Trump mess began. Trump has wanted nothing else but to have all the nations in the world come to his doorstep and kowtow. Now, though, he needs to find a way out of this aspect of his self-inflicted wounds.
ecmu...National security trumps “environmental concerns”. The US has sufficient environmental regulations in place to offset any real impact.
serg...Mining gives us self sufficiency
ebr....Our national parks are what make America so great. Do not touch our national parks, state parks, or NWR. They're where endangered wildlife lives and where we go to escape the busy city life.
wolf...Rare earths are critical to the economy and national security
ahaf...We need to realize we are one world. Countries need to stop fighting and work together to provide resources for all. Stupid humans. When mother earth has enough we will be wiped off the planet. I'm surprised it hasn't happended yet.
jllm...If we have them
brad...The best solutions are to find alternative battery chemistry, require better environmental protection from mining companies before turning them loose, and to stop the stupid tariff wars.
j2br...Banning mining of all rare earth in the USA is too extreme. A compromise from the EPA needs to be worked on.
slap...There are many forms of environmental concerns - some may have mitigations, but I definitely don't support a blanket dismissal of environmental concerns, which is how this question seems to be worded.
brod...This situation should spur effort to reclaim and recycle components from the millions of electronic devices that are discarded yearly and end up in landfills.
geor...We don’t have the necessary elements to mine here in the US. We already mine rare earths here, but only China has control of about 90% of these mined elements so little chance that the US even has the ability to mine much more rare earths here. Unfortunately, our President didn’t fully comprehend how many ways China has control over the US markets. Besides controlling these critical elements, China also can control our markets. And they showed just how much last week when they started selling some of the $800 billion US bonds they hold. The bond market sell off caused the President to put a 90-day hold on many tariffs that resulted in a huge one-day increase in the markets. Sadly, China can crash our markets permanently if they decide to sell all of their US bonds. Add to that that Japan also sold off some of the $1.1 Trillion dollars they hold in US bonds and they can also affect our markets at any time. I wish we had a fully cognizant President and Advisors who had a clue of the effects of their talk and actions!
vick...We shouldn’t have to mine rare earths “despite” environmental concerns. We should use our research and development brains and technology to mine things safely. It doesn’t have to be an either/or issue. Being from WV I can say from the coal mining industry that it is possible to mine safely. However unfortunately we have to force mining companies to forgo some profit to do it safely and in many cases our government has not forced the issue. Trump has just downsized MSHA and NIOSH in my hometown which are leading the causes for mining and environmental safety. Shame on DOGE.
cica...And not until we have a functioning government in place that will curb the worst abuses of the industry
elys...Under the current administration, I'm actually frightened of all the horrors that will be inflicted on the environment. We need to recognize this is China making a strong move in response to Trump's "4 D chess" game. Tariffs don't bug them - they're happy to punish us. Trump doesn't get it.

Do you believe the suspect’s actions reflect a broader political trend or an isolated case of extremism?

chri...WHile there may, in fact be a broader trend towards political extremism, violence is thankfully rare.
serg...Generic hatred
elin...Similar to Luigi Magione case.
cica...Most of it fueled by right wing talk
sing...And a hate crime? The timing is very telling.
ebr....People don't know how to act constructively anymore, which is too bad. They must learn to regulate themselves emotionally so nothing like this happens again.

If brown rice contains more arsenic but more nutrients, which would you choose to eat regularly?

  • 76% White rice
  • 24% Brown rice

EmailComments
mdul...Anything ingested is toxic when taken in sufficient quantities. Just as tuna contains mercury so it should not be consumed daily, the same holds true with brown rice. It is better for Americans who eat nowhere near as well as they should and it is unlikely that many of us will eat enough brown rice weekly or monthly to have meaningful negative outcomes.
mark...There is information missing from this analysis. Since the arsenic levels are due to the flooding of rice paddies, it is reasonable to assume that arsenic levels vary based on where the rice is grown. A better analysis would compare arsenic levels of rice grown in various locations and provide this information to consumers.
timh...The nutrient deficiency can be overcome with other foods to avoid arsenic.
jllm...Was brought up on white rice hard to change
ebr....Remember who is in charge of the nation's health right now. I'll not believe anything for a while.
geor...Need way more info before making a decision. Wouldn’t feed brown rice to young children or infants.
