Still, if they’re producing a crop predominantly for export, then maybe it would be better for the US to have those farmers focus on a crop that’s more beneficial for the US food system and domestic consumption. The farmers’ decision to focus resources on soybeans was a business decision. Business decisions should factor in risks, including, in this case, the risk of market changes from the tariffs that a large percentage of farmers voted for. However, because farmers are vital to US food production, it is in our best interests that farmers stay afloat. So, a bailout might be necessary.

We should always avoid placing the US in a position where another country can hold food as a hostage. We must always prevent food shortages on our home soil. They were insistent that government had no role in choosing which industries to bail out and that Obama should have just let them go under. In the aftermath, Obama's decision was prescient and actually made money for the treasury.
