The neo-Marxist (or outright Communist) thought strain, including identity politics, has run strong there since at least the 1960s, but it started impeding the university's basic functioning. They are not primarily in existence to disseminate ideologies. Change is needed. Not sure if the changes announced are exactly those changes, but the direction must change. With universities being as expensive as they are, do we want to spend thousands of dollars to learn about the neuroscience of zombies, vampires, ethical hacking, Taylor Swift literature, and the intricacies of ice cream making (unless you are studying to be a chef)? You can study those subjects all you want on Instagram and Youtube, and not pay thousands to go into debt. College should be about learning critical thinking, life skills, science, technology, engineering, math and history. Teachers trying to push political agendas should not be hired. Teachers should (neutrally) present both sides of an argument and then encourage critical thinking so students can learn to make their own decisions based on their own investigations, not the teachers. Tenure should be dissolved so bad teachers can be fired. Too many teachers, no matter how awful they are at their job, can't be let go once they achieve tenure. I believe Trump is trying to get Universities back on track. I'm also curious, if the Federal Government is giving so much money to universities, why are they still so expensive for U.S. citizens? These days college seems more about parties, prestige, and amenities, and less about a well rounded education. Universities should streamline to keep costs affordable and trim the extracurriculars so the students don't have to incur as much debt to get educated. Foreigners shouldn't be the only ones getting a strong education in the U.S. |
