Poll Results and Comments : US Drug Overdose Deaths Decline, EU's Defense Plan and the Real Cone of Silence

Anna's Daybreak News

Just facts, you think for yourself

What best describes your perspective on drug policy?

  • 71% More government intervention (regulation, treatment, harm reduction)
  • 21% Less government intervention (personal responsibility, enforcement, free market solutions)
  • 8% Other

EmailComments
arth...Continue to reduce the availability of opioids and at the same time continue addict treatment.
hotc...Trump is finally fighting this problem at the borders!!!!
jrv1...This needs government intervention
mars...I think early education and careful prescribing of addicting drugs. Treatment does not work unless person is really ready. Illicit drugs seem too easily obtained
tmj6...a mixture of both makes the most sense
geor...Keep doing what is working! And add even more places for people addicted to get help. We DON’T need more regulation and punishment!
kyle...People need help when it comes to drug addictions! I believe the government doesn’t do enough to stop the drugs from coming into our country and these deadly drugs are so readily available to anyone that more government funding to assist in preventing deaths is vital!
elin...Must be a combination of wise government intervention along with enforcement. Let's use what actually works instead of theorizing.
andr...Non violent crime is ridiculous and arguably racist. This is a personal choice.
cdal...My son was an addicted to Fentanyl he was smoking it. It was rotting his lungs and ended up with pneumonia 5 times, with hospital stays of 4-6 days each time in 6 months. He was on 24/7 oxygen he went through the Methadone program, then Saboxon and was finally living his life when the addiction got him and he assumed he could smoke the same as he had in the past. He dropped dead in his bathroom in my home after two years of trying to get sober. We need govt funding for addiction. He wanted to be clean but the addiction got him. We need government funding for rehabilitation as the cost of rehab stays are unaffordable for 99%of the family’s.
dkst...You have to get to the root cause of what drives a person to drugs which could be a weak family unit, abuse, depression. Until these areas are improved drug and alcohol abuse will continue.
iffy...Government needs to lead on this public health crisis
ande...Who would be the free market customer in this case? This is a case in which the costs after the crisis are so much higher than the investment in preventing crisis.
rgar...The answere is exactly what Trump and his admin are doing. Stop the flow of drugs, fight the distribution. We also need tobe more vigilant to penalize ditribution to the maximum.
wait...Alberta currently has the best treatment protocol in my option. Rapid access to services including housing is key. More mental health support is also critical. And of course Universal Healthcare like most first world countries have.
carl...Regulation and assistance obviously work.
jhut...Criminalizing opioids and other prescription drugs makes it difficult for people who need them for legitimate health reasons to get them. That is the real opioid crisis, not the overdoses. People who want to use will use something else. There should be no discussion of opioids without a discussion of mental health
9ale...More Government intervention but in different ways that what currently isn't working. Stiffer punishment for the drug dealers - force them to do manual labor like cleaning up litter
chri...We haven’t actually tried true legalization with the exception of cannabis. Legalize, and don't overtax (in California cannabis so expensive legally people buy illegal product instead). In 1971, when Nixon declared the war on drugs, approximately 2% of the population had substance abuse problem. The numbers haven’t changed much since then. Prohibitions have create the unhinged Mexican cartels and destroyed respect for law and law enforcement. Enough!
jllm...If I knew then what I know now, some intervention would definitely helped with longevity
leti...I believe that people who resort to using street drugs to alter their emotional and/or psychological state would benefit best from professional mental health support that may need to include regulated and safe drugs in addition to counseling or therapy.
rlee...Both - more enforcement of dealers and suppliers including foreign countries and more social consequences for users.
sara...Strong border.
serg...Free all drugs. Sell them with prescription. Tax them
ebr....Addiction is a choice just like everything else.
laur...Government shouldn't play mommy to drug heads.
kell...Prosecuting criminals
samr...Less people to die. We’ve lost so many people to overdoses the supply of addicts is declining.
1sim...Unrelated: apparently the courts and tans a segment of congress and the citizen public people need to understand illegal immigrants, or as the democrats called them “undocumented citizens”, ARE NOT CITIZENS. Therefore they have no “due process” under our laws, no rights under our laws. People need to know and understand this. Riots and stupidity are being perpetrated. All those who ran our boarders have no rights in the USA.

Did the Fed make the right decision by keeping interest rates steady?

  • 80% Yes, inflation is still a concern
  • 20% No, they should have cut rates to boost the economy

EmailComments
inex...The Fed is in a bind, blindsided by tariffs and inconsistent policies, chaos and uncertainty
jhut...Trump is running the economy, and the country, into the ground. We were promised a reprieve on inflation and the government needs to act
serg...Inflation is the real threat to economy
jame...The FED is the only remaining independent federal agency. I trust their judgment for the time being.
mrjo...Audit the Fed.
jeff...Too much uncertainty right now.
jllm...As usual the Fed is always late to the party, foresight is not their strong suit, and only looking back we see their failures, and judging by the response I have to live this again, and again, and again, and again
nata...Plus the way the firings happened to government workers, they won't be counted toward unemployment so that number will be higher.
jrv1...You are either ahead o behind the curve. Things are slowing down. Timing hasn’t been a Fed strength
pman...They have done an amazing job but it will be more difficult with Trump and as his policies start to take effect
andr...This is a little tricky for the average person to answer. However, I think truflation, a crypto backed inflation index is the most interesting index out there. Given your interest in crypto you should check it out. This is achieved by using "oracles" on the chainlink infrastructure.

Is Europe too dependent on the US for military security?

  • 78% Yes, the EU must stand on its own
  • 22% No, NATO already provides security

EmailComments
jllm...I can only go by what I see on TV, but NATO looks like a big hole we throw money down. The EU knows what it needs if someone else was going to pay for it why not.
jrv1...We should assist, but EU has fallen short for years
ebr....We need to stop turning our backs on our allies. We are now the Axis of Evil. Wtf is wrong w people nowadays? My grandparents are rolling in their graves, so to speak.
ande...Countries with aligned values should protect each other and their values, but each member of the alliance should contribute fairly and be responsible for their own security via the alliance. That said, the US has clearly benefited immensely from the post-war order, has made the bulk of the defense investment, but that is real power.
rgar...The EU needs to spend more on their defense. The US has supported the bill for their defence since WW 1. They now act like its a big deal for them to be as invested in their own defense expendatures as the US. They act like we have let them down. The US will always be their to help them, they need to gelp themselves also
zack...It’s long past due for the US to stop taking care of Europe. It’s been a one sided friendship for way too long.
leti...Yes, but we have to remember that was the setup after WWII. The U.S. established military bases in most European countries that were involved in WWII, U.S. paying for some of their military security allowed them to spend $$ lifting up their countries economically after the devastation of WWII. At the same time, I think the U.S. needs to remain a major partner in NATO to thwart Putin's goals on reclaiming the former Russian states.
mich...Now that Trump has demonstrated his lack of reliability and has climbed into bed with Putin, the EU has little choice but to fortify. The U.S. is no longer a dependable ally, perhaps even worse than that - working against the EU and all its former allies economically. It will take decades for the U.S. to recover from the damage Trump has done to the country and it's citizens in only a few months.
cmar...I’m a strong supporter of NATO… but that doesn’t mean that the EU shouldn’t be increasing their own defense spending, especially with the threat from Russia. We can’t let Russia become a USSR again.
cica...It’s actually both. NATO is the greatest alliance in the world’s history. It’s being torn apart by a moron.
msyk...Not because we need them to, but because the US is not longer a trustworthy ally and they need it to protect themselves from us as much as anyone else.
gena...The UN needs to become the new world leader for democracy because America is moving to an authoritarian government and it will take time to recover. NATO may need to remove America from its participating members.
geor...The European countries have provided more support to Ukraine than the US- no matter what President Trump and his cohorts say! I am hoping and praying that they can stop Trump’s giveaway to Putin of whatever he wants on Ukraine. If Trump pulls out of NATO, then these countries should immediately vote Ukraine into NATO. Then American can’t vote against Ukraine!
serg...Europe got to stand on its own
mbul...It’s a fallacy that NATO was all for the benefit U.S. as many people seem to believe. But we are no longer a reliable partner, and have opted to cede our power. Basically, the U.S. has announced to NATO that it’s going to take its marbles and go home. Lots of dancing in the streets of Moscow and Beijing.
paul...The U.S. must be, and has always been, a big player in European security. Whether we like it or not, we are part of a bigger global community and security concerns anywhere will effect the U.S. interests sooner or later. Aggressive state actors globally must be stopped early before they get momentum and eventually affect the U.S. directly. This has always been U.S. foreign policy! Have we forgotten history? Especially European history??
mrse...Another unintended consequence of Trump’s tariff policy and “America First.” American industry will lose customers as the EU becomes more self-reliant

How do you personally feel about AI’s rapid development?

  • 59% Concerned: It could create major risks
  • 34% Excited: It will bring progress and efficiency
  • 6% Other

EmailComments
geor...There are no controls for AI or the companies taking control of AI so I am concerned that decisions will only be made to boost all their bottom lines even if parts of what they do are helpful. No oversight is scary!
rgar...It already is a risk if we do not lead and control this new technology.
mdul...As with all groundbreaking developments, there is cause to be excited about the rapid pace of AI development. The concern I have is not a dystopian outcome in some near term; I am more concerned with AI's ability to further blur the lines between what is "real" and what is misinformation. Of course, this has significance for person privacy and even relatively pedestrian concerns but I am focused more on the political debate. Already, Trump has succeeded in removing the credibility of independent news services to inform the public and his followers have adopted state run media as their only news sources. Adding AI-generated misinformation leads to even more divisiveness in the populace.
jllm...Anything with Elon Musk’s name on it is a major risk
evem...Feeling left behind. Don't yet understand all the potential applications. Excited and concerned equally. Too much focus on tech, not enough on wisdom.
9812...This will have a similar impact to arrival of trains
cica...I’m not sure what to think other than I don’t trust Elon Musk with anything at this point. Both him and the president are national security risks.
ashl...AI will bring progress and efficiencies, but not without a cost and potential miss use.
bhad...Maybe it will be use for good but knowing human behaviors it ill most likely be used for evil doings. Humans will be harmed by this!
mary...So much hubris, what could go wrong?!
pjca...Both excited and concerned, the general public, (including myself) needs a better understanding of AI.
9ale...It's overblown
bria...AI will be the death of us.
inex...Just as there’s an upside, there’s a downside too, which we can already see. Critical thinking skills, creativity. It’s the beginning, and already we outsource to AI
carl...Skynet
meli...Neither excited nor concerned. Watchful for the time being
mich...With people like Musk at the helm, how could anyone be unconcerned?
serg...It will eventually bring universal income
jhut...I think tech companies are overstating the usefulness of AI and are racketeering huge amounts of money from the government and private investors that ultimately do not benefit average Americans at all
dkst...Honestly I don't know how I feel about AI yet. It would be a good but it could also take us down a road we don't know is there yet and that potentially could be risky.
kold...Happening without ethical or legal control
elin...Bothe excited and concerned.
9729...It's like a drug that has not been adequately tested by the FDA.
leti...My primary concern is the impact AI will have on the workforce. AI is already being used to do tasks that have been done by people, ie., coding that has been done by humans now being done by AI. So, how do people in the labor force or planning to enter the labor force prepare themselves for the jobs of the future that are not done by AI?
nata...What about regulation and putting in boundaries to test AI before it is used for malicious reasons?

Who is most responsible for protecting kids from harmful food ingredients?

  • 53% Food manufacturers
  • 47% Parents

EmailComments
rgar...The real answere is both. The parent has to be more vigilant about what their children consume. However if food manafactuers were concerned about the quality and purity of what they produce, and they typically are not, it should and would not be a problem.
serg...Parents do not have choice over products available in supermarket
arch...Now do a similar study on post-mRNA reactions
9812...The 50% who hold a unknown manufacturer responsible for kids eating seem to have a parenting issue
pjca...parents are ultimately responsible for their children. However, if you can’t acquire safe affordable food from the US food manufacturers, I’m not sure how the parents can protect their children.
gena...Parents are not experts and are not versed on chemicals and ingredients.
uppe...gov't reg
patr...Parents wouldn’t need to protect children if foods were safe. How can companies be allowed to sell food that is known to be harmful to children?
kell...Both should be responsible but too many parents either aren’t smart enough or aren’t paying enough attention. Regulators should regulate.
lala...Parents can’t have enough knowledge about food ingredients to protect children. They are not experts
jare...Parents cannot be food scientists; we need to be able to trust that food manufacturers are not putting potentially toxic ingredients in everything!
alys...Parents should be able to choose from a safe food market.
mich...Toxic food should not be allowed and manufacturers must be held to account. This lack of concern for making only healthy food is endemic across the entire industry. It likely explains the rise of cancer, diabetes, obesity and many many life shortening diseases.
meli...Parental choice from safe healthy options please!
perm...Parents should make an effort to know what ingredients are in the food their children, and they themselves, consume. Parents should also educate themselves on the positive or negative qualities and impacts of the foods consumed. It is a parent’s responsibility to watch out for their children. The role of government is to require food manufacturers to be transparent about ingredients. Potentially toxic ingredients should be banned from use in food manufacturing.
krsd...While parents should monitor their children’s diet, the food industry is responsible for ensuring the food we eat is sanitary and free from toxins. Parents can’t possibly know that giving their children’s a shlsuy one time will result is an illness. Furthermore, what if they are with friends or grandparents, who don’t care about their diets? Kids should be protected and provided safe food so that no matter where they get it from, parents can’t possibly trust it to be safe. That’s on the food suppliers.
zack...Hard to blame parents too much when we have been in the dark for so long. MAHA is going to open a lot of eyes.
jllm...How can I protect my children when I don’t know what’s in them, maybe the new government can dissolve that department. A-
manu...Food manufacturers should not use harmful ingredients.
ende...And the FDA . They shouldn’t be on the market at all
elin...Not all parents are knowledgeable enough to do a good job of protecting their children.
cica...The parents are responsible for their children, but they don’t manufacture or process a lot of the food that gets consumed out here. Often, parents make the assumption that the food their children are accessing. It’s already vetted for safety. It’s really up to the people manufacturing process the food to make sure that harmful ingredients are not included

Could this technology make public spaces better or worse?

  • 51% Worse: Potential for manipulation and selective messaging
  • 49% Better: Less noise pollution and more privacy

EmailComments
cica...Yes just like Internet, algorithms and social media
aubr...Isn't this literally what happened in Zero Day?
mary...There is so much uneasiness about technology now that we’ve seen who’s running it.
rayd...And ..... loving it!
jllm...Sounds like just another way of subliminal messaging , buy this, vote for that, and that’s not the weird shit
medl...I don’t really understand the technology. Not sure how it can be manipulated.
