SpaceX's Starship Success

Yesterday, SpaceX’s 400-foot Starship rocket completed its fifth test flight successfully. Previous Starship test flights ended in failure.

Launched from Boca Chica, after a seven-minute ascent, the first-stage booster returned to the launch pad.

SpaceX's mechanical arms, called "chopsticks," caught the descending booster. This 232-foot stainless steel booster was gripped tightly. CEO Elon Musk celebrated, saying, “The tower has caught the rocket!!”

Meanwhile, the upper part of the rocket reached 130 miles in space, traveling at speeds of 17,000 mph before landing safely in the Indian Ocean, where it sank as planned.

Boeing Cuts 17,000 Jobs

The company plans to cut 17,000 jobs, about 10% of its workforce. This decision follows a strike by 33,000 workers that halted the production of its key jets.

Boeing expects to lose $5 billion in the third quarter. Analysts believe the strike is costing Boeing $1 billion each month.

The delay in the first deliveries of the 777X jet pushed its expected arrival to 2026. Boeing’s CEO, Kelly Ortberg, highlighted the need for structural changes to boost production quality and reduce costs.

Boeing also reported an additional $5 billion in new costs related to several commercial and defense programs.

China’s Deflation

China faces growing deflationary pressures. In September, consumer inflation eased to 0.4% year-on-year, down from 0.6% in August. This was below the expected 0.6% increase.

Producer prices dropped 2.8% year-on-year. The sharpest decline in six months. The previous month's decline was 1.8%, and analysts anticipated only a 2.5% drop.

Food prices did rise by 3.3%, but non-food prices fell by 0.2%. Analysts warn that industrial overcapacity and weak demand require attention.

Finance Minister Lan Foan stated that more stimulus measures are forthcoming, but details remain unclear.

Unlocking Your DNA for $400

Nucleus Genomics, a startup, recently launched a service that analyzes your DNA. By using simple cheek swabs, customers receive reports on genetic variants, disease risks, and even traits like baldness.

Reports include polygenic risk scores for over 20 diseases and additional insights into longevity.

Sequencing your entire genome now costs $400, a drop from $10 million a couple of decades ago.

However, the accuracy of predictions remains uncertain. Current genome data lacks diversity, causing concerns about the reliability of risk scores.
