Tariff War Begins

President Trump announced sweeping tariffs: 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on Chinese goods. These measures will start today, February 3. Canada plans to impose tariffs on $106.6 billion worth of US goods like beer, wine, and household appliances.

The combined GDP of Canada and Mexico equals only one-seventh of the US’s $27 trillion economy, yet they rely heavily on trade with the US for 80% of their exports. Canada’s GDP could fall by 3%, while Mexico could see a 2% decline.

Experts predict US inflation could rise by 0.54 percentage points as prices increase for essential goods. Trump will meet with Trudeau later today to begin negotiations.

Last year, Canada supplied roughly 13% and Mexico 42% of US auto parts. US consumers could see car prices rise by $3,000 due to tariffs on components that cross borders multiple times.

Do you think that tariffs are an effective tool for negotiating better trade deals?

Air Ambulance Crash in Philadelphia

An air ambulance crash occurred in Northeast Philadelphia. Just 30 seconds after takeoff, a Learjet 55 went down near Roosevelt Mall, resulting in a catastrophic explosion.

The crash claimed seven lives—six aboard the plane and one in a nearby car. Nineteen others on the ground were injured, with most receiving treatment and later being released from local hospitals.

Among the victims were a young girl, Valentina Guzman Murillo, her mother, and four crew members. The plane was transporting the child back to Mexico after she had received four months of treatment for a serious condition.

The Learjet crashed less than a minute after climbing to approximately 1,600 feet. Witnesses reported seeing a massive fireball, with debris scattered across a four to six-block area.

Would this crash make you reconsider traveling on small private jets?

OpenAI’s o3-Mini and Deep Research

OpenAI launched o3-mini, a new reasoning model that outperforms its predecessor, o1-mini. It delivers 83.6% accuracy on AIME math tests (high reasoning), 77% accuracy on PhD-level science questions, and a 2073 Elo rating in competitive coding.

o3-mini supports function calling, structured outputs, and developer messages, making it ready for real-world applications. It also allows developers to adjust its reasoning effort—low, medium, or high—to balance speed and accuracy.

For ChatGPT users, Plus and Team members get 150 messages per day. Free users can try o3-mini under the "Reason" option.

OpenAI also launched Deep Research for ChatGPT Pro subscribers. It is an AI agent capable of conducting multi-step research autonomously. Users can submit queries through text, images, and files, receiving responses in 5 to 30 minutes.

Would you pay for access to an AI-powered research tool like Deep Research?

Musk's DOGE Gains Access to Treasury's Payment System

Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has secured access to the US Treasury's payment system. This system disburses trillions in benefits, grants, and tax refunds annually.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent approved this access after a clash with career official David Lebryk, who resigned on February 1.

Musk claims his team discovered that Treasury officials were instructed to approve all payments, even to fraudulent entities. In 2024, improper payments totaled $236 billion, primarily from Medicare, Medicaid, and unemployment insurance.

Senator Ron Wyden expressed deep concern over Musk’s access, stating that any political interference could severely damage the economy. Musk's group aims to save $4 billion a day by streamlining government processes.

Should Elon Musk’s DOGE have access to the Treasury’s payment system?

Asteroid Alert?

A newly discovered asteroid, 2024 YR4, poses a potential risk to Earth with a 1.3% to 1.6% chance of impact on December 22, 2032. The asteroid measures between 100 and 300 feet wide. It is rated Level 3 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory calculates a 1-in-63 chance of collision. However, other sources suggest a slightly higher risk of up to 6%.

If it strikes, it could unleash energy equivalent to a 10-megaton explosion, affecting areas up to 50 kilometers from the impact site.

The asteroid's trajectory passes over the eastern Pacific Ocean, parts of South America, and South Asia. Current observations indicate nearly a 99% chance it will safely pass Earth.

How worried are you about a 1-in-63 chance of impact?

Synthetic Genome Engineering

Researchers at Macquarie University completed the first full synthetic eukaryotic genome, known as SynXVI. This synthetic yeast genome consists of 16 chromosomes.

The project demonstrates the potential to enhance the resilience of yeast, allowing it to utilize glycerol as an energy source at higher temperatures. CRISPR genecediting identified and corrected errors in the synthetic genome that impaired growth.

The genome spans 903,000 base pairs and includes a novel tRNA neochromosome. By analyzing genetic marker placement, researchers found that incorrect positioning could disrupt essential genes.

Researchers foresee applications in producing sustainable materials and advanced medicines.

Should scientists be allowed to create synthetic life forms?
