Trump Pauses Tariffs Except with China

President Donald Trump paused the threat of 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days. This decision came after both countries pledged to enhance border security.

Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to the US border. Canada will introduce advanced technology and personnel along its border.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted that his government will create a fentanyl czar, classify Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations, and launch a joint task force to combat organized crime.

Trump continues to threaten new tariffs on China, with a 10% tariff set to take effect today. China threatened a 15% tariff on US coal and LNG products, a 10% tariff on American crude oil and other goods, and an antitrust investigation against Google.

Should the U.S. continue using tariffs as a primary strategy in trade negotiations?

US Sovereign Wealth Fund with Eyes on TikTok

President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the creation of a US sovereign wealth fund. This fund aims to take stakes in various assets, including potential involvement with TikTok.

The fund's establishment is projected to take 12 months and involves Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Sovereign wealth funds usually rely on budget surpluses, but the US is operating at a budget deficit.

There are over 90 sovereign wealth funds worldwide, collectively managing $8 trillion in assets. In the US, more than 20 state-level funds exist, with the largest ones in Alaska, New Mexico, and Texas.

Previous efforts by the Biden administration to establish a similar fund were not successful.

Where do you stand politically on government involvement in the economy?

Manufacturing Recovery

US manufacturing grew for the first time since 2022, with the ISM Manufacturing PMI rising to 50.9 in January from 49.2 in December. This increase signals expansion after 26 months of contraction. New orders surged to 55.1.

Construction spending rose 0.5% in December to $2.19 trillion. Residential construction spending increased by 1.5%, driven by single-family projects.

US banks reported an increase in demand for business loans in Q4. For the first time in two years, the net share of banks reporting stronger demand turned positive. Demand rose to 9.4% for large and medium-sized businesses and to 3.4% for small firms.

El Salvador's Bold Offer

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele made an offer to the United States. He will accept deportees of any nationality, including US citizens convicted of violent crimes. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced this agreement after meeting Bukele.

Bukele stated that El Salvador is willing to house dangerous criminals, including members of MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, in its mega-prison, CECOT. This offer includes a fee, which Bukele described as low for the US but significant for his country.

Rubio emphasized that this agreement allows the US to deport illegal immigrants with criminal records. He described the arrangement as a "safe third country" agreement.

US law prevents the deportation of American citizens, making the practical application of this offer uncertain.

Does this agreement signal a shift in US immigration policy?

Cannabis Use in Teens

A study revealed that teens who use cannabis are 11 times more likely to develop psychotic disorders than non-users. This risk rises to 27 times when focusing on ER visits.

Teens today have access to stronger cannabis than past generations. From 1995 to 2015, THC levels in cannabis increased by 212%. High-potency products lead to increased mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

A University of Eastern Finland study found differing metabolomic patterns between cannabis users and non-users, highlighting unique metabolic changes during psychotic-like experiences.

Cannabis alters brain chemistry during critical developmental periods. Daily users, especially those who start young, are at a heightened risk for cannabis use disorder (CUD), which affects 14.2 million Americans annually.

How do you feel about cannabis legalization in general?

Light Exists in 37 Dimensions

Scientists demonstrated that a pulse of light can exist in 37 dimensions. This research explores the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) paradox, challenging local realism in quantum physics.

The team used a fiber-based photonic processor to test this paradox. They manipulated photons to examine how quantum nonlocality operates. They showed that the state of a photon could be influenced across distances, contradicting classical physics principles.

This study underscores that quantum mechanics is more bizarre than previously understood.

By manipulating photons through 37 different states, researchers opened pathways for future advancements in quantum technology.

Does quantum nonlocality (where objects affect each other instantly across distances) sound plausible?
