Trump’s Territorial Ambitions

President-elect Donald Trump suggested the possibility of military action to gain control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. “We need Greenland for national security purposes,” he said, adding that the Panama Canal was essential as well.

Donald Trump Jr. visited Greenland, announcing a desire to acquire the territory. In response, leaders from Denmark and Greenland dismissed these ideas, affirming their commitment to autonomy and cooperation within NATO.

Additionally, Trump suggested economic pressure might persuade Canada to become the 51st state, asserting that US trade deficits with Canada would need addressing. Canadian leaders rejected these suggestions.

Trump also declared plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."

The End of Fact-Checking

Meta decided to end its fact-checking program across Facebook and Instagram. Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that the existing system led to “too many mistakes and too much censorship.”

Instead of relying on third-party fact-checkers, Meta will implement a "community notes" system. This shift parallels Elon Musk's similar approach on X (formerly Twitter).

Meta's changes include removing restrictions on controversial topics like immigration and gender identity, which Zuckerberg said were out of touch with mainstream discourse.

While conservative voices celebrate the end of perceived censorship, critics warn it could lead to a resurgence of disinformation and hate speech.

Earthquake Rocks Tibet

An earthquake in Tibet resulted in at least 126 deaths and 188 injuries. Striking at 9:05 am, the quake measured 7.1 in magnitude and occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) near the traditional city of Shigatse, home to 800,000 people.

The quake flattened more than 1,000 homes in nearby villages, with rescue teams working in freezing temperatures that dropped to minus 16 degrees Celsius (3 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight.

Reports indicated that 150 aftershocks followed the initial tremor, shaking residents across Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and northern India.

The Chinese government dispatched 3,000 rescue workers and allocated 100 million yuan ($13.6 million) for emergency relief. The earthquake's epicenter was located in Tingri County, a region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide.

Nvidia’s Personal Supercomputer

Nvidia unveiled a new mini PC called Project Digits. This device packs 1 petaFLOP of AI power, making it 1,000 times more powerful than a typical laptop.

It enables users to run AI models with up to 405 billion parameters locally, eliminating reliance on data centers.

Project Digits includes an Nvidia GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip, an Nvidia Blackwell graphics card, and an Nvidia Grace processor. It features 128 gigabytes of memory and 4 terabytes of SSD storage.

Set to launch in May 2025 at a price of $3,000, the device runs on Linux-based Nvidia DGX OS and supports frameworks like PyTorch.

Ultra-Processed Foods

Researchers found ultra-processed foods, like frozen pizzas and chips, make up 58% of daily calories for US adults and children over the age of one. These items often contain high levels of salt, fat, sugar, and carbs.

In a controlled study involving 36 participants, those consuming energy-dense, hyperpalatable meals ate about 1,000 extra calories daily compared to those on minimally processed diets.

Participants gained around 1 pound on energy-dense diets but lost weight on minimally processed options. Not all ultra-processed foods are equally harmful. Canned refried beans and fruit cocktails have lower calorie densities and do not contribute as much to overeating.

Researchers suggest choosing foods with around one calorie per gram to support better health. Opt for low-sodium options and pair energy-dense items with healthier sides, like salads, to balance meals.

Mars Samples Return

NASA announced a new, cost-effective plan to return rock and soil samples from Mars. The plan is to retrieve 30 titanium tubes containing samples by the 2030s.

NASA is exploring two options for the return mission. The first option, using a sky crane like previous Mars missions, is projected to cost between $6.6 billion and $7.7 billion. The second option, using tech from commercial partners, may cost between $5.8 billion and $7.1 billion.

Both strategies aim to simplify operations, including pre-cleaning sample tubes on Mars and switching to nuclear power. NASA's Perseverance rover has already collected more than 30 samples.
