Congress Certifies Trumpā€™s Election Victory

Congress certified Donald Trump's victory with 312 Electoral College votes against Kamala Harris's 226. Harris presided over the ceremony under tight security. A winter storm dropped about 6 inches of snow, making traveling difficult.

Congress had no plans to contest the results. Vice President Harris emphasized the need for a peaceful transfer of power.

Fences and checkpoints surrounded the Capitol, reminiscent of the 2021 events, during which 140 police officers were assaulted and $2.8 million in damages occurred.

President-elect Trump indicated plans to pardon some of the 1,500 individuals charged in the January 6 unrest. Security will remain heightened through his inauguration on January 20.

Trudeau Steps Down

Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Canadaā€™s prime minister after nearly a decade in office. Trudeau expressed that ā€œinternal battlesā€ made him unfit to lead in the upcoming election.

Rising voter dissatisfaction prompted this decision, alongside turmoil within his government, notably after the sudden resignation of Finance minister Chrystia Freeland.

Trudeau faced criticism over issues such as soaring food prices and housing shortages. Polls show the Liberal Party trailing the Conservatives by 26 points.

Trudeau's tenure began in 2015, bringing policies like $10-a-day childcare and a national climate plan. However, his popularity waned due to scandals and a backlash against high inflation rates.

US Steel Sues Biden Admin

Nippon Steel and US Steel have filed lawsuits against the Biden administration after Biden blocked their proposed $15 billion merger. The companies claim the decision harms US steelworkers and undermines their competitive edge against China.

The lawsuits allege undue influence by Biden, who emphasized the need for a strong, domestically owned steel industry. Nippon Steel pledged to invest $2.7 billion into US Steel. Now, US Steel warns it may shift production to cheaper, nonunion facilities.

Both companies accuse competitor Cleveland-Cliffs and union leader David McCall of collusion to block the merger. In 2023, Cleveland-Cliffs attempted a $7 billion buyout, which US Steel rejected in favor of Nippon's offer.

Biden's administration defends the decision as necessary for national security, despite facing bipartisan opposition.

Warren Buffett's Unpayable Mortgage

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) filed a lawsuit against Vanderbilt Mortgage & Finance, a subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. The lawsuit claims Vanderbilt ignored "clear and obvious" signs that borrowers could not afford their loans.

Vanderbilt, part of Clayton Homes, the largest manufactured home builder in the US, is accused of manipulating lending standards, which often results in high-interest rates for borrowers.

The CFPB's director, Rohit Chopra, stated that Vanderbilt "knowingly traps people in risky loans." The CFPB seeks to force Vanderbilt to change its practices and provide restitution.

Historically, Clayton Homes has received criticism for its lending practices, particularly for targeting lower-income families in rural areas. Many customers struggle with monthly payments, leading to late fees and foreclosures.

Surge in Young Peopleā€™s Colorectal Cancer

Recent research highlights trends in gastrointestinal cancers, particularly among those under 50. Colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for men in this age group and the second leading cause for women.

Key findings include a 2021 analysis revealing 372,511 new gastrointestinal cancer cases and 199,978 deaths. Colorectal cancer exhibited an age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of 38.17 per 100,000. Liver cancer had a 2.18% annual increase in incidence.

Researchers are focusing on gut health, obesity, and microbiome changes as potential cancer causes. Alcohol consumption and processed foods are linked to heightened cancer risks.

Geographic disparities in cancer prevalence exist, with Kentucky reporting a colorectal cancer ASIR of 49.91 per 100,000. Young adults are increasingly being diagnosed with this disease.

Alzheimer's: The Role of a Common Virus

Recent research linked cytomegalovirus (CMV) to specific cases of Alzheimerā€™s disease. Approximately 9 out of 10 people show CMV antibodies by age 80.

This virus, a type of herpes virus, usually remains dormant but may cause chronic gut infections in some individuals. In a study of 101 donors, 66 had Alzheimerā€™s. Researchers found CMV antibodies in intestines and brain, suggesting a pathway through the vagus nerve.

This discovery implies that 25-45% of Alzheimerā€™s cases could be associated with CMV. The researchers propose developing a blood test for active CMV infections to enable antiviral treatments that might prevent Alzheimerā€™s onset.

Other studies suggest a connection between herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and Alzheimerā€™s, with findings showing that HSV-1 may initially act as a protective response in the brain.
