Arrest Made in CEO Killing

Police arrested 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was connected to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot dead on December 4, 2024.

Authorities found a "ghost gun" and a silencer during his arrest. The firearm used is believed to resemble the one involved in Thompson's killing. Mangione was spotted at a McDonald's where an employee recognized him from media coverage.

Police discovered multiple fake IDs and a handwritten document expressing animosity toward corporate America. This document may hint at Mangione's motivation.

Mangione attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated as valedictorian from Gilman School in 2016. He will face extradition to New York to answer charges related to Thompson's death.

Nvidia Under Fire

China initiated an antitrust investigation into Nvidia following the US imposing stricter export controls on high-end semiconductors. The probe examines whether Nvidia has complied with commitments made during its 2020 acquisition of Mellanox Technologies.

Reports indicate that Nvidia must prove it has not violated conditions aimed at preventing discrimination against Chinese customers.

Nvidia saw its revenue from China drop to 17% from 26% two years ago. China's last major antitrust probe against a foreign tech firm was in 2013, resulting in a $975 million fine for Qualcomm.

Nvidia's shares fell by 2.5% after the news broke. Analysts believe the investigation may not significantly impact Nvidia's operations in the short term, as many of its advanced chips are already restricted from entering China.

China's Minerals Embargo: Tougher Than Expected

China announced a severe embargo on four critical minerals: gallium, germanium, graphite, and antimony. This decision has raised alarms among multinational companies.

The embargo not only targets the direct export of these minerals to the United States but also extends to companies globally that might send acquired minerals to US firms.

This is the first time Chinese regulations have introduced a broad ban on transshipment. Beijing’s strategy aims to split global supply chains, compelling companies to choose between supplying the American or Chinese markets.

Jens Eskelund from the European Union Chamber of Commerce highlighted the growing concern among EU businesses about the implications of this tech war.

Google’s Quantum Leap

Google announced its new chip, Willow, capable of solving complex problems in under five minutes. The company stated that even under the best conditions, a classical supercomputer would still need a billion years to match the results from Willow.

The Willow chip features 105 qubits, the fundamental units of quantum computing. It addresses critical error issues that have historically plagued quantum chips.

Google researchers confirmed they could reduce error rates while boosting the number of qubits. They also announced real-time error correction, a vital advancement for practical quantum applications.

Blenrep: Hope in Blood Cancer Treatment

GSK's Blenrep is showing promising results for multiple myeloma, a common blood cancer. In a late-stage trial, Blenrep, combined with bortezomib and dexamethasone, reduced the risk of death by 42% compared to Johnson & Johnson’s Darzalex.

This breakthrough leads to an average survival increase of nearly three years for patients who experienced relapse or refractory cases.

The FDA is expected to approve Blenrep in July of 2025, following its withdrawal in 2022 after a previous trial failure. GSK forecasts Blenrep could achieve peak sales of over $3.79 billion annually.

Multiple myeloma is the third most common blood cancer and is treatable but not curable.
