War in Middle East Expands to Lebanon

On Sunday, Hezbollah launched 120 rockets on northern Israel as retaliation for the explosive pager and walkie-talkie operation that rocked the terrorist organization last week.

Yesterday, Israel launched dozens of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets inside Lebanon. The strikes, part of “Operation Northern Arrows,” focused on 1,600 locations where Hezbollah stored weapons, including homes concealing missiles.

Reports indicated that nearly 50% of Hezbollah’s 180K missile arsenal were destroyed during yesterday’s operation. The Israel Defense Forces urges civilians to leave areas where Hezbollah stores weapons.

China Unleashes Stimulus Blitz

China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), announced a 50 basis point cut in reserve requirements, freeing up around 1 trillion yuan ($142 billion) for lending. They also reduced the seven-day repo rate to 1.5%.

In addition, the PBOC lowered existing mortgage rates and reduced down payment requirements to 15%. Home prices are falling at their fastest rate in over nine years.

The bank aims for a 5% growth rate this year, responding to concerning deflation and disappointing economic data.

Many investment banks have adjusted down growth forecasts for China for 2024.

Boeing’s 30% Pay Raise Offer Sparks Union Backlash

Boeing offered a 30% pay increase, better retirement benefits and a $6,000 bonus to end an 11-day strike by 33,000 union workers.

This new offer came after the union rejected an earlier 25% raise. The pay rise still falls short of the union's demand for a 40% increase.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers criticized Boeing for bypassing formal negotiations and setting a four-day deadline for a vote. The union refused to hold the vote, claiming Boeing did not negotiate the terms properly.

To cut costs, Boeing is furloughing workers, halting supplier orders, and freezing hiring.

US Moves to Ban Chinese Car Tech

The Biden administration proposed a ban on Chinese-developed software in internet-connected vehicles, citing national security risks.

Officials are concerned that China could use vehicle electronics to monitor Americans or infiltrate US infrastructure.

The ban would take effect in 2027 for vehicles using Chinese or Russian software. Automated driving systems must comply by 2030. This measure will block any vehicles with connectivity features from China or Russia.

Moreover, Biden has already implemented 100 percent tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, asserting that these products are heavily subsidized.

AI Mathematical Reasoning Progress

Traditional chatbots like ChatGPT suffer of “hallucinations”, which means that sometimes they just make up stuff that is not real.

Harmonic, a Silicon Valley start-up, developed an AI called Aristotle that can translate natural language into formal math language. Aristotle mathematically proves its answers, a leap in reliability.

Meanwhile, Google’s AlphaProof competed in the International Mathematical Olympiad, solving 28 out of 42 points, equivalent to a silver medalist.

It achieved this by verifying its solutions using the formal language Lean, a first in the competition's history since its inception in 1959.
