Tariff Clash

A federal trade court ruled Trump’s 10% global tariffs unlawful, saying he exceeded authority under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974.

Imposed in February 2026 to address a $1.2 trillion trade deficit, the tariffs hit nearly all countries. A coalition of 24 states and small businesses challenged the levies; the court blocked tariffs for these plaintiffs and ordered refunds, including $690,000 for a toy company.

The court rejected the administration’s broad “balance-of-payments” claim. Tariffs remain for others until expiration in July 2026.

The administration plans to replace Section 122 tariffs with Section 301 levies targeting 16 countries and forced labor-related economies. An appeal is expected.

Is using tariffs an effective way to reduce the US trade deficit?

Most people trust their retirement calculators.

You log into Vanguard or Fidelity, check your projected Social Security benefit, and do the mental math. It usually looks workable. You close the laptop and go about your day.

But right now, that number is wrong.

Not because of a glitch. Because the math changed behind closed doors in February, and the software hasn't caught up.

The Congressional Budget Office quietly moved the Social Security insolvency date up to 2032. They also raised the automatic, across-the-board benefit cut to 28%.

But your retirement dashboard is still using old data. It shows what the government wants to pay you, not what the law actually requires them to pay you when the trust fund runs dry.

If you expect $3,200 a month, the reality is closer to $2,300. Over a 25-year retirement, that gap compounds into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The official government report is currently five weeks late. When it finally drops, the planning tools will be forced to update. Millions of people will watch their projected retirement income shrink overnight.

You have a narrow window to fix your plan before the scramble begins. We mapped out exactly what is happening and how to protect your money.

Here is the straight truth about the Social Security reset.

The Tuesday Morning Mistake: Why the number on your screen is mechanically wrong. We explain the critical difference between "scheduled" benefits and "payable" benefits, and why your current plan is likely double-counting money the law forbids paying out. [Section 1: The Vanguard Blind Spot]

The February Math Change: What actually happened this year. We break down how a new tax law and a sudden drop in immigration pulled the depletion date forward to 2032. And we explain why waiting for Congress to act is a losing bet. [Section 2: Why the Window is Closing]

The Glide Path Trap: This isn't just about a smaller monthly check. Your 401(k) target-date fund assumes you have a guaranteed income floor. If that floor drops 28%, your stock-to-bond ratio is suddenly broken. Here is why the error in your calculator is infecting the rest of your portfolio. [Section 3: The Calculator Trap]

The Seven Days That Closed the Window: The pace of news over the last week has been deceptive. The headlines moved from "look at this update" to "the report is overdue." We explain why the next 30 days are critical to update your plan before the public number changes. [Section 4: The Narrow Planning Window]

The 5-Pillar Bridge Plan: How to fix this in an afternoon. You don't need an actuary. We walk you through the exact math to figure out your post-cut benefit, optimize your claiming age, and use your savings to build a cash-flow "bridge." [Section 5: The Bridge Plan]

The 5 Costly Mistakes: The most common reaction to this news is claiming at 62 "before they take it away." We explain why that is mathematically backward. Plus, how to avoid the "tax torpedo" and use a temporary tax window to convert your IRA before 2028. [Section 6: The 5 Mistakes That Cost You]

When the Standard Advice is Wrong: The Bridge Plan works for most people. But what if you have a serious health condition? What if you are a public-sector retiree or divorced? We cover the six specific situations where the default rules don't apply. [Section 7: The Edge Cases]

The 30-Day Calendar: We don't just leave you with theory. We give you a literal day-by-day checklist. Four weeks to lock in your plan, size your bridge, and coordinate with your spouse before the official numbers change. [Section 8: The Execution Calendar]

Congress will do what Congress does.

But your retirement depends on decisions you can make this month, with information that already exists.

Hormuz Attacks

Iran attacked three US Navy destroyers near the Strait of Hormuz with missiles, drones, and boats; all attacks were intercepted. The US retaliated by striking Iranian military sites.

The Strait, handling 20% of global oil, remains nearly sealed by Iran since February. Iran accuses the US of breaching an April ceasefire by attacking an oil tanker and civilian areas, claiming damage US denies.

The UAE reported Iranian missile and drone attacks; Saudi Arabia and Kuwait lifted restrictions for US bases.

Brent crude rose above $100/barrel; US gasoline is up 40% since February. Negotiations may resume in Pakistan amid ongoing conflict and ceasefire tensions.

What do you think is the most likely outcome in the next two weeks?

AI Rollout Fears

Vice President JD Vance warned that Anthropic’s AI model, Mythos, which independently detects software vulnerabilities, could enable cyberattacks on banks, hospitals, and water plants.

The White House, concerned about these risks, is considering an executive order to oversee advanced AI and asked Anthropic to pause Mythos’s expansion. National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross now controls Mythos usage.

Treasury and State officials have flagged threats to critical infrastructure. OpenAI restricts access to its similar GPT-5.5-Cyber model. Some officials fear stricter rules could hinder AI growth, while advocacy groups support stronger safeguards.

Anthropic backs federal AI guardrails. The situation illustrates government challenges managing powerful AI amid rising cybersecurity concerns.

Should the government impose formal oversight on advanced AI models like Mythos?

AWS Cloud Breakdown

AWS’s cooling failure at a Northern Virginia data center in the US-EAST-1 region caused overheating, hardware damage from a related power loss, and ongoing outages. AWS rerouted traffic but users still reported slowdowns and service disruptions.

Coinbase experienced slower performance but confirmed user funds were safe. CME Group’s CME Direct platform also faced outages, with maintenance completed and no cause disclosed.

The US-EAST-1 region, critical to internet infrastructure, has had similar outages in 2021 and 2025.

The event exposes vulnerabilities in physical cloud infrastructure and highlights risks for industries, especially financial platforms, reliant on major cloud providers, emphasizing the need for stronger backup and mitigation strategies.

Do you think the increasing centralization of internet services on a few cloud giants poses a significant risk?

Tackling Drug-Resistant Cancer

Researchers discovered UNI418, a small molecule that degrades DNA repair proteins RAD51 and CHK1 by activating the Cul4A ubiquitin ligase complex.

UNI418 reduces IP6, which normally inhibits Cul4A, enabling the complex and its partner WDR5 to destroy repair proteins and block homologous recombination. This makes drug-resistant cancer cells vulnerable again.

UNI418 restored sensitivity to PARP inhibitors like Olaparib in resistant cells and slowed tumor growth in animal xenograft studies, with the strongest effect combined with Olaparib.

This approach targets the stability of repair machinery via cellular metabolism rather than genetic changes, offering a new strategy to overcome cancer therapy resistance.

Is it preferable to weaken cancer cells by destabilizing their repair mechanisms rather than altering their genetic material?

Coffee Brain Boost

A study tracked 62 participants, comparing regular coffee drinkers (3-5 cups daily) and non-drinkers over coffee cessation and reintroduction, with blinded caffeinated or decaf coffee.

Both types lowered stress, depression, and impulsivity. Coffee drinkers had higher gut bacteria Eggertella sp and Cryptobacterium curtum, which aid stomach acid and bile acid, potentially reducing gut infections.

Only decaf improved learning and memory, suggesting non-caffeine compounds like polyphenols support cognition. Caffeinated coffee reduced anxiety, increased alertness and attention, and linked to lower inflammation risk.

The study highlights distinct gut-brain impacts of coffee’s compounds, indicating potential benefits for mental and gut health through diet.
