Canada Tariffs
President Trump ordered a 50% tariff on some Canadian goods under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, citing discriminatory treatment of U.S. cars, alcohol and dairy.
The duties hit wine, beer, milk, hockey gear, plywood and cement, but exclude major exports like energy, potash, critical minerals, steel, aluminum, auto parts and lumber.
They take effect in 30 days and cover about $20 billion in goods, including some USMCA-covered items.
Canada called the move unilateral and may retaliate. The U.S. already has tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, copper, lumber and some auto parts.

China AI Alarm
OpenAI and Anthropic warn that cheap, downloadable Chinese “open weight” models could create security risks and undercut U.S. rivals.
Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 and Alibaba’s Qwen 3.8 Max were well received; Kimi K3 matched U.S. models on some benchmarks. Open-weight models can be customized with company data and tasks, and Chinese versions are much cheaper.
The Trump administration is split over responses, including blacklists, security warnings and an executive order, while a rule giving officials early access to top models has stalled.
U.S. open-source efforts are also advancing, but Congress has already blocked DeepSeek from federal and defense networks.

Lettuce Reversal
FDA says a lettuce test was false positive and does not change its main finding linking the cyclospora outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms in central Mexico, also served at some Taco Bell restaurants.
More than 1,600 people have been sickened, with officials warning the total could reach thousands. Taylor Farms is keeping its recall of lettuce distributed June 29-July 16 across 27 states.
Michigan officials found 90% of 190 Taco Bell exposure cases reported eating iceberg lettuce. The outbreak spans more than 30 states. Taco Bell traffic and Yum Brands shares have fallen.

Israel says Iran moved thousands of centrifuges into Pickaxe Mountain near Natanz last fall, after June’s 12-day war and US-Israeli strikes on Iran’s main nuclear sites.
The mountain facility is 300 to 450 feet underground in solid rock and could hold several nuclear-related sites.
Trump called it a possible US target and said Washington was ready to strike. Satellite-based analysts say work has continued for 15 months, with truck traffic, tunnel reinforcements and a new security perimeter.
Iran has denied IAEA access and provided no details. It has about 1,000 pounds of 60% enriched uranium.

Coffee Rebounds
Up to 5 cups of caffeinated coffee a day, or about 400 mg of caffeine, appears safe for most adults, according to the American Heart Association.
It says this range may be linked to lower risk of heart disease, heart failure, stroke and type 2 diabetes in some people.
The group says 2 to 4 cups is usually safest, and 3 to 5 eight-ounce cups of black coffee fit the limit.
Energy drinks and shots can carry higher doses and may raise blood pressure and irregular heart rhythm risk. Sugar, syrups, milk and cream can reduce benefits.

Flashpoint Plaza
A former U.S. Army soldier, Andrew Arrabaca, 43, set a fire Monday morning outside 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan, using gasoline, a lighter and a firework in a canister.
He also fired an airsoft rifle and carried axes, knives, fireworks and incendiary devices, along with a sign reading “ICE Off Our Streets.”
Authorities said he targeted the building and told investigators he was willing to hurt or kill people inside or outside.
Three people were lightly injured. The FBI and NYPD’s Joint Terrorism Task Force are investigating; no charges have been filed.
