Birthright Fight
Trump signed two executive orders aimed at narrowing birthright citizenship. One would deny citizenship to babies born to parents tied to hostile foreign actors, foreign-government employees, or schemes to buy access through surrogacy.
The other targets “birth tourism” and could affect visitors on tourist, student, and work visas, with possible visa cancellations and lifetime bans.
The orders follow a Supreme Court ruling that blocked Trump’s earlier effort under the 14th Amendment.
The White House says the new orders fit that ruling; critics say they are illegal. Estimates of birth tourism vary widely, from about 9,600 to 25,000 births a year.

Meta’s Child Safety Bill
A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $942 million in a child-safety case: $567 million for an abatement fund and $375 million in civil penalties.
The court said Meta created a public nuisance and harmed children’s mental health through Facebook and Instagram.
The company must limit teen app use, hide likes by default for minors and improve safety disclosures.
Most of the fund will pay for mental health treatment; the rest will support prevention, screening and coordination programs. Meta must file twice-yearly reports. Meta plans to appeal.

Gum Disease Signal
A review of 28 longitudinal studies involving more than 300,000 people found gum disease may predict later type 2 diabetes.
In six studies tracking about 29,000 participants for 5 to 20 years, those with periodontitis had an 18% to 25% higher rate of new diabetes.
Full tooth loss was also linked to a 30% higher diabetes rate. The reverse link was weaker but suggested diabetes may also raise later risk of gum disease and tooth loss.
Researchers say dentists could help flag people for diabetes screening, and diabetic patients may need closer oral care.

Fauci Contempt Fight
A Senate committee voted 8-7 to hold Anthony Fauci in contempt after he invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times at a July 29 hearing and refused basic questions.
Chairman Rand Paul says he will send the referral to the Justice Department without a full Senate vote.
The dispute centers on Biden’s pardon for Fauci covering Jan. 1, 2014, to Jan. 19, 2025; Republicans argue it does not justify silence, while legal experts expect a court fight.
The pardon excludes later conduct and state cases. If convicted, Fauci could face fines up to $100,000 and up to a year in prison.

Plastic Threat
Researchers found polyethylene, one of the most produced plastics and common in food packaging and wrap, may worsen fatty liver disease.
In Texas A&M tests, polyethylene exposure increased liver-disease signs, and the effect was stronger with a high-fat, high-fructose, high-cholesterol diet. Fatty liver disease affects about 25% of people worldwide.
The study suggests diet and microplastic exposure may interact to accelerate liver damage, especially for people eating a Western-style diet.
Spatial transcriptomics pointed to PPAR-alpha, which regulates fat metabolism, and ANXA2, involved in tissue repair. Researchers next plan to test whether polyethylene also drives fibrosis.
