Democrats Score Big Wins

Democrats won key 2025 races in New York City, New Jersey, and Virginia amid President Trump’s second term. Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, defeated Andrew Cuomo for NYC mayor with record turnout, strong youth support, and promises to freeze rent, make buses free, and expand childcare.

Mikie Sherrill won New Jersey governor, continuing three consecutive Democratic terms. Abigail Spanberger became Virginia's first female governor, emphasizing pragmatism. California passed Prop 50, potentially shifting five House seats to Democrats. Early voting rose in New Jersey and Virginia.

Trump’s policies, including federal funding threats and shutdowns, influenced voters amid 57% disapproval. These results boost Democrats after 2024 losses but may not predict 2026 federal outcomes.

UPS Cargo Jet Crashes

A 34-year-old UPS McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo plane crashed and exploded after takeoff from Louisville. The left wing caught fire during climb at 5:15 p.m., and the plane crashed near the runway.

Seven people died, including four on the ground; eleven were seriously injured. The crash caused a large fire and damaged nearby buildings, forcing airport closure and a shelter-in-place order within five miles. UPS halted operations at its Louisville Worldport hub, disrupting deliveries for major clients like Amazon and Walmart.

Flight data showed the plane climbed only to 175 feet before descending. The NTSB is investigating; no hazardous cargo was aboard.

Trump to Slash Prices for Leading Weight

The Trump administration is finalizing deals with Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to lower prices and expand access to weight loss drugs.

Through a new platform, TrumpRx, lowest doses will be sold at $149 monthly, bypassing insurance. Medicare and Medicaid will begin covering these drugs for obesity, not just related conditions.

Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy will be priced at $149 monthly; Eli Lilly’s Zepbound at $299, $50 less than current direct prices. If approved, Lilly’s orforglipron will also be offered at $149. These drugs now cost up to $1,350 monthly.

The deals include digital tools to support diet and exercise. The initiative aims to reduce long-term health costs by preventing diabetes and heart disease.

Dick Cheney Dies at 84

Dick Cheney, former Vice President and defense secretary, died at 84 from pneumonia and heart-related issues. He served under Presidents Ford, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush.

As defense secretary, he helped direct the 1991 Gulf War. As Vice President, Cheney led the post-9/11 response, pushed the Patriot Act, advocated for harsh interrogation, and supported warrantless surveillance. He was a key promoter of the 2003 Iraq invasion, which lacked evidence of WMDs and resulted in prolonged conflict and heavy casualties.

Domestically, he backed tax cuts and deregulation. Controversies included his chief of staff’s conviction and a hunting accident. Cheney broke with his party by endorsing Kamala Harris in 2024.

Artificial Leaf

Cambridge researchers developed a “semi-artificial leaf” that converts sunlight, CO₂, and water into formate fuel for chemical manufacturing. The device uses organic semiconductors and bacterial enzymes, operating continuously for over 24 hours with 0.6% solar-to-fuel efficiency and 87% Faradaic yield.

It functions in a benign bicarbonate solution without toxic additives, embedding carbonic anhydrase in porous titania to enhance stability. The leaf enables a “domino” reaction producing pharmaceuticals with high purity.

This biohybrid approach could reduce the chemical industry’s reliance on fossil fuels and toxic materials, cutting emissions responsible for 6% of global CO₂. Commercial use is expected within 5–10 years.

Baldness Reversal

Researchers found that fatty acids from fat cells activate hair follicle stem cells to trigger hair regrowth. A serum containing oleic acid and palmitoleic acid induced full hair regrowth in hairless mice within 20 days by targeting follicles in their resting phase.

Since 15-20% of follicles in bald humans are resting, the serum shows potential for treating pattern baldness, which affects 42.68% of U.S. men. Current treatments have side effects or are invasive. The serum uses naturally occurring monounsaturated fatty acids, potentially offering a safer alternative.

Human trials are planned to assess safety and effectiveness. The study highlights that fat cells fuel hair regeneration by releasing fatty acids after skin injury.
